A punter pedig nem más, mint a College Football Hall of Famer Pat Richter, aki a Badgers elkapójaként 1963-ban Rose Bowl rekordot állított fel 163 elkapott yarddal, majd 1989 és 2004 között a Wisconsin atlétikai igazgatója volt. Ő szerződtette le a focicsapat élére a sikert sikerre halmozó Barry Alvarezt.

Hall of Famer Pete Pihos, one of the greatest Eagles of all-time, has passed away at the age of 87.

"The N.F.L. was so different in 1964 that, in many ways, it would be unrecognizable to today’s fans. The league then consisted of 14 teams, each playing a 14-game schedule, divided into two 7-team divisions. There were no wild-card teams, no playoff games (unless there was a tie for first place in one of the divisions), and no Super Bowl. “Monday Night Football” didn’t start as a regular series until 1970. The winners of the divisions met in the championship game in late December.

Most of the teams used stadiums built primarily for baseball, like Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Wrigley Field in Chicago, and Metropolitan Stadium in Minnesota, whose configuration forced both teams to use the same sideline, right next to each other. Starting times weren’t uniform, either. Some games began at 1, many at 1:30, and others at 2. All the games were played outdoors on grass fields. The scoreboard clocks, not all of which were digital, weren’t even official. If you were at the game, or were watching on television, you usually didn’t know precisely how much time was left in a given quarter. Can you imagine that today?

The head coaches in those years had names like Lombardi, Halas, Landry and Shula. They wore jackets and ties on the sidelines, not wires and headsets. Like the fans in the stands, some of the coaches didn’t hesitate about lighting up a cigarette during the game.

In the N.F.L., the names of the players didn’t appear on the backs of the jerseys. It was the owners’ way of “encouraging” the fans to buy a program. Place-kicking was done straight-ahead, not by soccer-style sidewinders. In 1964, N.F.L. kickers made 53.1 percent of their field-goal attempts (Paul Hornung made 12 of 38). This year, 82.3 percent of field-goal tries were successful.

The last year of the five-man officiating crew was 1964. The referee would conduct two coin flips before each game. The first, during the warm-up, was official. They would later re-enact it for television. The penalty flags were white and the goal posts, which looked like a big “H”, were on the goal line."
