Miami Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan met with the media following a hectic period of roster moves, and if there was one overarching message from his press conference, it was this: Miami isn’t afraid of change. The Dolphins are going to get younger. They’re going to develop their own players. And if Sullivan sees an opportunity to improve the roster, he’s going to take it — even if it creates some short-term discomfort.

That philosophy was evident throughout Sullivan’s media session as he discussed Miami’s roster construction, the quarterback room, the team’s young players and what he expects from the Dolphins moving forward.

Sullivan Isn’t Afraid to Keep Changing the Roster

The Dolphins added seven players through waivers, something even Sullivan admitted he wasn’t expecting.

But the general manager believes Miami came out of the process better than it went into it.

Sullivan said the goal is to get “incrementally better” and emphasized that the Dolphins will continue churning the roster and creating competition.

That philosophy also explains why Miami has been willing to make so many changes so close to the beginning of the regular season.

Sullivan acknowledged that bringing in numerous new players this late isn’t ideal, but he made it clear that maintaining continuity simply for the sake of comfort isn’t his job.

“If we sit on our hands so that it’s comfortable, then I’m not doing my job as a general manager,” Sullivan said.

It’s a revealing comment about how Sullivan intends to run the Dolphins.

The Dolphins Are Going to Be Young

Perhaps the most important part of Sullivan’s press conference came when he explained Miami’s long-term roster-building philosophy.

“We’re going to be a draft and develop team,” Sullivan said.

That’s not just a slogan.

Sullivan explained that Miami intends to remain young, be highly selective in free agency and use its financial resources to retain its core players. He pointed toward the team’s investments in Jordyn Brooks, De’Von Achane and Aaron Brewer as examples of that approach.

Sullivan also believes remaining young is important for managing the salary cap and creating a sustainable roster.

Rather than building a team filled with expensive outside veterans, Miami wants to identify its difference-makers, develop them and eventually pay them.

That approach is already evident throughout the roster.

Youth Won Out at Several Positions

The release of linebacker Tyrel Dodson was one example.

Sullivan praised Dodson’s professionalism and performance but acknowledged the move demonstrated how highly Miami thinks of its young linebackers, including Jacob Rodriguez.

The same philosophy has impacted the wide receiver room.

Miami traded Tutu Atwell and is moving forward with a young group that Sullivan believes possesses legitimate NFL talent.

Sullivan specifically praised Malik Washington and Kevin Coleman when discussing the room’s upside. He also sounded encouraged by Chris Bell, who returned from his injury much sooner than Miami originally anticipated.

The youth movement carries risk, and Sullivan isn’t pretending otherwise.

He acknowledged that young players will have inconsistencies and growing pains. That will be particularly interesting in Miami’s secondary, where the Dolphins have very little NFL starting experience.

But Sullivan likes the talent.

“We’re young, we’re inexperienced,” Sullivan said. “There’s going to be some growing pains.”

That’s a reality Dolphins fans may have to accept in 2026.

Kyle McCord Gives Miami Another Developmental Quarterback

Sullivan also discussed the Dolphins’ revamped quarterback room.

Miami traded Quinn Ewers and subsequently acquired Kyle McCord, who Sullivan has followed since McCord’s college career.

Sullivan described McCord as a quarterback who can “keep the train on the tracks,” praising his ability to process quickly and deliver an accurate, catchable football.

The Dolphins believe McCord can operate the offense if something happens to Malik Willis.

Miami also added Brady Cook, another quarterback Sullivan believes upgrades the room.

He described Cook as an extremely tough competitor with leadership qualities and pointed to what Cook accomplished at Missouri.

The moves involving McCord and Cook fit into Sullivan’s broader philosophy about quarterbacks.

Sullivan said he doesn’t believe a team can ever have enough young quarterbacks with developmental potential. He referenced his time in Green Bay, where Aaron Rodgers sat behind Brett Favre and Jordan Love later developed behind Rodgers.

The Dolphins hope they can develop McCord and Cook behind Willis and then see what they have down the road.

The Dolphins Believe They Can Evaluate Malik Willis

All of the roster turnover naturally raises questions about Malik Willis.

Can Miami properly evaluate Willis while surrounding him with so many young and inexperienced players?

Sullivan believes it can.

For him, evaluating Willis doesn’t have to be overly complicated.

Is he making good decisions? Is he protecting the football? Is he accurate? Does he know when to use his legs? Is the offense moving the football?

Sullivan believes the best quarterbacks can occasionally “tilt the field” in their team’s favor even when everything around them isn’t perfect.

He believes Willis possesses the physical traits and intangibles necessary to potentially become that type of player.

But Sullivan also made clear that eventually everyone is judged by the same standard.

Wins and losses.

That includes Willis, head coach Jeff Hafley and Sullivan himself.

Big Expectations for Chop Robinson

One player Sullivan wasn’t shy about setting expectations for was Chop Robinson.

“I have big expectations for Chop,” Sullivan said.

He called Robinson Miami’s most gifted pass rusher and described him as an ascending player coming off a strong training camp.

Now Sullivan wants the production to follow.

The Dolphins need Robinson to continue developing and, as Sullivan put it, “get a bunch of sacks.”

Miami has several rugged edge defenders capable of setting the edge, but Sullivan acknowledged the Dolphins may have to manufacture some of their pass rush schematically.

That makes Robinson’s development particularly important.

Kadyn Proctor Continues to Develop

Sullivan was also encouraged by rookie offensive lineman Kadyn Proctor’s transition to guard.

There are still technical areas that need improvement, particularly with Proctor’s eyes, but Sullivan believes those issues are coachable.

The physical tools aren’t a concern.

Sullivan raved about Proctor’s ability to move defenders and create a firm pocket for Willis.

When Proctor gets his hands on defenders, Sullivan said, “it looks different than everybody else.”

Sullivan doesn’t believe Proctor is a finished product yet, but he expects him to become a very good player.

Achane Will Get the Football — But Miami Needs Help

De’Von Achane’s workload was another interesting topic.

Sullivan left no doubt that Miami’s star running back will remain a major part of the offense.

“He’s going to get the ball. He’s going to touch the ball.”

But Miami doesn’t want everything falling on Achane.

Sullivan challenged Jaylen Wright and Ollie Gordon to establish themselves as dependable complementary backs.

If those two can earn the coaching staff’s trust, Miami can keep Achane heavily involved while avoiding a significant drop-off when he comes off the field.

Sullivan’s Vision Is Becoming Clear

If Dolphins fans wanted to understand what Jon-Eric Sullivan’s version of the Miami Dolphins will look like, this press conference provided perhaps the clearest explanation yet.

Miami wants to draft and develop.

Miami wants to stay young.

Miami wants to pay its own difference-makers.

And Miami isn’t going to hang onto players simply because they’re familiar or experienced.

There will be growing pains with that approach. Sullivan openly acknowledges that.

But he also isn’t interested in pretending the roster is better than it is.

When Sullivan discussed what Miami’s 53-man roster says about the organization, he said the Dolphins must evaluate themselves honestly and refuse to “tell ourselves lies” when something isn’t performing at the necessary level.

That may be the most important statement Sullivan made.

This isn’t necessarily a finished roster, and Sullivan isn’t treating it like one.

The Dolphins will continue looking under every rock, developing their young players and making changes whenever they believe those changes make the team better.

Whether that approach translates into wins in 2026 remains to be seen.

But after listening to Sullivan, there shouldn’t be much confusion about how he intends to build the Miami Dolphins.
