Injury: Right knee contusion.

What happened: "I was making the tackle and somebody came in low and hit my knee," McCray said. "When I got up and started walking, I felt better. I didn't feel any pop or anything. All I felt was pain. I thought I was good. I tested it on the sideline. It'll be OK. I'll get it checked out [Sunday]. Nothing major. Everything is good."

Concern level: Moderate. There's concern, because McCray is the most valuable player injured. He starts in nickel situations when Aaron Colvin moved inside. However, a contusion wouldn't likely be something that would hold McCray out for the opener against Carolina on Sept. 13.

LB LaRoy Reynolds

Injury: left knee involving the medial collateral ligament.

What happened: "It was a screen play," Reynolds said. "I tried to make the tackle. I jumped into the block then the runner cut me at the last second. I'm good. We'll go to the doctor tomorrow to check it. I feel fine. I think I'm good and look forward to coming back."

Concern level: High. Reynolds' value to the team was telling as most of the defense came over to him on the sidelines to check on him as he sat on the bench. The third-year veteran is clearly a popular player in the locker room. He's also arguably the best special teams player on the roster.

OT Josh Wells

Injury: Dislocated left thumb

What happened: "I dislocated it on kickoff return," Wells said. "Then, it kept dislocating. I'll get it checked out tomorrow. I've never had anything like that."

Concern level: High. The Jaguars don't have much depth at tackle. If Wells is out for a while, the Jaguars would be in dire straits if left tackle Luke Joeckel or right tackle Jermey Parnell went down. Austin Pasztor and Sam Young don't seem suited to be a reliable starter at tackle.

LB Khairi Fortt

Injury: Meniscus issue in knee.

What happened: "It feels like something simple like a sprain, but nothing torn," Fortt said. "It happened on the opening kickoff. My foot caught a little in their turf. I ended up playing through it. Then, I realized I couldn't really extend my leg."

Concern level: Moderate. Fortt is battling for a backup role with Jeremiah George and Thurston Armbrister. If Fortt and Reynolds are both out for an extended time, the Jaguars become woefully thin at linebacker.

WR Arrelious Benn

Injury: Broken collarbone.

What happened: The injury appeared to occur on Benn's 5-yard run.

Concern level: Moderate. Benn was having a strong camp, but with his extensive injury history it's hard to believe the Jaguars thought they would be able to depend on him. The Jaguars seem to have a solid foursome with Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Marqise Lee and Rashad Greene.

WR Damian Copeland

Injury: Dislocated shoulder.

What happened: It's unclear how Copeland was injured. He seemed fine in the locker room as he was dressed and walking to the bus.

Concern Level: Low. Copeland was injured all of last year and considered a long shot to make the 53-man roster. He would've likely been a guy assigned a large workload in the final preseason game.

Kezdem a jó hírekkel: A Lions ellen bemutatkozik Yeldon és Sample is az NFLben. Clemons pedig megpróbál majd élete lehelni a jelenleg mély kómában lévő pass rushba.

*The Jaguars’ opening drive included a third-and-9 conversion (10-yard catch by Greene). Bortles had 2.53 seconds to throw when Gerhart picked up a blitz.

*Bortles was 1-of-4 passing for 20 yards on throws that traveled at least 15 yards in the air. The completion was to Allen Robinson (17 in the air).

*Against the Jaguars’ first-team offensive line, New York blitzed six times (two five-man rushes, three six-man rushes and one seven-man rush).

*The Giants’ sack of Bortles was a six-man rush vs. six-man protection. Bortles, who was in trouble in 1.69 seconds when LB J.T. Thomas rushed unblocked when Gerhart and Parnell blocked the same player, said he missed his “hot” receiver, which was Lewis on the right side. He was open.

*Early in the second drive, Denard Robinson did well to get four yards. Lewis was beat by DE Robert Ayers, but Robinson alerting cut back toward the middle of the field.

*Allen Robinson’s 36-yard pass included 34 yards after the catch. He ran a shallow crossing route from left to right and his man, CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, was picked by Lewis, who was running a right-to-left crossing route.

*On Alualu’s three offensive snaps, the Jaguars gained six yards (on third-and-1), three yards (on third-and-2) and four yards (on third-and-1).

*The second drive ended with a Bortles’ incompletion/semi-throwaway. He was flushed from the pocket when DT Cullen Jenkins beat Linder and DE Owamagbe Odighizuwa bull-rushed Parnell. Later, Linder was beat by DT Jay Bromley, who stopped Denard Robinson for no gain.

*I’m not calling Bortles’ 48-yard incompletion to Hurns a drop because there wasn’t an available replay to make a decision. Allen Robinson, though, did have a drop on a 14-yard pass on second-and-10.

Defense

*Odrick and Davis had batted passes on the Giants’ opening drive. Davis got a hand up despite being double-teamed. In the second quarter, Hood also broke up a pass.

*Manning’s first possession passes traveled 28, 38, 11 and four yards besides the two bat-downs.

*The Jaguars were in their nickel defense (five defensive backs) for their entire opening six-play drive.

*Most of the Jaguars’ starters were out of the game after the Giants’ fourth series, the first for QB Ryan Nassib.

**In a combined 17 drop-backs by Manning and Nassib, the Jaguars failed to record a sack. They rushed four on 13 snaps. Their pressure calls came via six-man rush (Smith and Posluszny blitzed) and three five-man rushes (a Smith blitz and two zone pressures – Branch dropped into coverage and Posluszny and Colvin blitzed).

*Against an extra pass rusher, Manning was 1-of-4 passing for 13 yards.

*Among the starters, the only bit of poor tackling came on the same play when Colvin and House couldn’t bring down WR Preston Parker, who gained 10 yards after the catch for a 14-yard gain on third-and-8.

*DE Ike Igbinosun was called for roughing the passer on the opening play of the second half. On the next drive, LB Thurston Armbrister was penalized 23 yards for pass interference.

*LB Jeremiah George led the Jaguars with eight tackles and SS Craig Loston had seven. Smith had the only sack.

Special teams

*There were two penalties – Damian Copeland was off-side covering a kickoff and Nick Marshall was off-side on a missed 46-yard field goal attempt. The Giants ended that drive with a touchdown.

*Back-up LT Josh Wells (thumb) and LB Khairi Fortt (knee) were both injured playing special teams.

*Greene had a six-yard punt return but later muffed a punt (he recovered).

Next up for the Jaguars’ offense: Touchdowns instead of field goals.

Quarterback Blake Bortles and the starters played three possessions Saturday night in the Jaguars 22-12 loss to the New York Giants and produced seven first downs and 131 yards, but only nine points.

But with the opener against Carolina three weeks away, the Jaguars are showing they can be more than functional in pass protection, on third down and capitalizing on their short-yardage opportunities. They are, gulp, interesting to watch.

Bortles was 8-of-16 passing for 98 yards, leading scoring drives of 10 plays-46 yards, 10 plays-49 yards and 12 plays-36 yards before departing with 11:32 left in the first half.

Josh Scobee (52 yards) and Jason Myers (38 and 49 yards) finished those drives with field goals.

“I liked the fact we were able to control the time of possession, took care of the football, pass protected well and didn’t make many big mistakes except for one penalty,” general manager Dave Caldwell told the Times-Union at halftime.

Said Bortles: “Obviously, you want to get seven and not three, but we were able to put some good drives together and guys did a good job. We were sharp in all our protections and guys ran routes to get open and that was cool to see.”

What was cool to see from a Jaguars perspective has been Bortles, who is 19-of-31 passing this preseason for 216 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions and an 82.2 rating.

“He did a nice job [Saturday],” Caldwell said. “He was accurate, kept plays alive and the protection was there, which was great.”

The Jaguars’ first-team defense played most of the first half. Giants quarterback Eli Manning was off target, completing only four of his 14 attempts for 46 yards and failing to enter the Jaguars’ red zone.

“We didn’t have any busts in the secondary, we had good coverage and made plays in terms of getting off the field,” Caldwell said. “We kept [Manning’s] passer rating pretty low [40.8].”

The Jaguars return to practice Monday and host Detroit Friday at 8 p.m.

Among the starters, Allen Robinson caught three passes for 64 yards, rookie Rashad Greene had two catches for 14 yards and defensive linemen Jared Odrick and Ryan Davis each battled down a Manning pass.

The Jaguars’ first possession was sparked by Robinson’s 20-yard catch on a skinny post. Three plays later, Greene converted a third-and-9 with a 10-yard reception. The drive ended after two incompletions and a sack.

“I like that we started fast,” coach Gus Bradley said. “Now we have to turn those three points into touchdowns.”

The Jaguars started their second drive at the 30 and moved into Giants territory on Bortles’ 36-yard pass to Robinson on a shallow cross. Two plays later, Bortles threw behind Greene, who was able to collect it nicely and scratch out a four-yard gain.

“In our ‘11’ personnel [three receivers], you’re going to see Rashad out there quite a bit,” Caldwell said.

On third-and-1, Toby Gerhart — with Tyson Alualu serving as the fullback — powered his way to a six-yard gain.

“When we needed a yard, we got at least a yard and kept drives alive when Toby and Tyson were in there together,” Caldwell said.

Following Gerhart’s carry, Denard Robinson was open down the right sideline, but Bortles threw incomplete in the end zone. Left tackle Luke Joeckel was called for an iffy holding penalty on the next play to force Myers’ first field goal.

“I was late [throwing] on that wheel route to D-Rob,” Bortles said. “That should have been a touchdown even before [Joeckel’s] penalty.”

Bortles’ final drive included more Gerhart short-yardage work – a three-yard gain on third-and-2 and a four-yard gain on third-and-1. This possession ended at the Giants’ 31. The missed opportunity came early in the drive on a long pass Allen Hurns was unable to catch near the goal-line.

“A really nice deep ball that Blake was able to drop in there,” Caldwell said.

After Bortles, Chad Henne was 7 of 12 for 31 yards before Jeff Tuel took over early in the fourth quarter.

De azért volt pár drop is, Hurns egy tuti TDt nem tudott elkapni, A-Robnak is volt minimum 1, de lehet inkább 2 dropja. A O-fal jól megvédte, igaz Joeckel fogják szidni a redzoneban elkövetett holdingjáírt, amely megakadályozta, hogy reálisan TD legyen. Az előtte lévő playnél Blake elismerte, hogy szerinte miatta nem jött össze a TD passz Denardnak.
Pierce elég jól futkározott, a 4. RB poszt kinéz neki. Henne viszont eddig elég gyengus.
Denardnak és Corey Grantnek is volt jó KRje, Greene csinált egy fumble az egyik PRénél.

A védelem viszonylag jól kordában tartotta a Giants kezdőit (Eli 14/4 46 yarddal zárt). pass rush megint nem igazán volt, bár Chris Smith összeszedett egy sacket. Andre Branch megint nem mutatott semmit. nekem egyre inkább ő a jelöltem, hogy tegyük ki, közben meg lehet, kezdeni fog.... Cap Capinek jés Alualunak jobb pass rushai voltak ma.

Josh Wells kézsérülést, LaRoy Reynolds és McCray lábsérülést szenvedtek, de csak előbbi tűnik komolynak.

1. RB T.J. YELDON

The Jaguars’ second-round pick, Yeldon is a game-time decision after sustained a sprained pinkie finger two weeks ago during a goal-line run late in the team’s scrimmage. He didn’t play against Pittsburgh. So what’s taking so long? Easy, the Jaguars are giving a nonverbal acknowledgement that No. 24 will be their No. 1 tailback when the regular season opens. Why risk further injury? If he does play against the Giants, take notice at how much quicker he looks than any other Jaguars running back.

2. WR RASHAD GREENE

Greene, the Jaguars’ fifth-round pick, was limited to eight offensive snaps against Pittsburgh (but he had a 37-yard punt return) and then missed Monday’s practice because of Achilles’ tendonitis. But Bradley was impressed with his work during the week and wants to get him more playing time against the Giants. Greene’s role on offense as a slot receiver is relatively locked in, but if he continues to flash as a punt returner, he may win that spot, too.

3. LB JEREMIAH GEORGE

After playing outside linebacker against Pittsburgh, George will get a shot as the second-team middle linebacker against the Giants. Special teams will play a huge role in George making the team but he must show he’s functional at two linebacker positions. The Jaguars have a wide open competition to be Paul Posluszny’s back-up and George is going against rookie Thurston Armbrister and possibly Khairi Fortt.

4. WR ARRELIOUS BENN

A month ago, it was hard to come up with a scenario that had Benn on the initial 53-man roster. But Marqise Lee and Neal Sterling remain out with hamstring injuries, providing extra opportunities for Benn. Lee is making the team, but Sterling — who we had as the No. 6 receiver — could be a candidate to be stashed on injured reserve. If the Jaguars opt for Greene as the punt returner, Benn could squeeze himself onto the roster as the final receiver. But he needs to stack big games together.

5. DE JARED ODRICK

Odrick, one of the Jaguars’ premium free-agent additions, missed the Pittsburgh game with a sore knee, but is expected to start against the Giants. A couple of things to watch: How physical is he setting the edge or shooting the gaps in the run game and how do the Jaguars position him in a pass-rushing situation (out of the game or at defensive tackle).

Shad and the Jaguars have been clear that the London agreement has been extremely successful and essential to the local revenue streams and long-term viability of the franchise in Jacksonville, and that an extension of the current agreement would be welcomed. That said, this is ultimately a decision that will be made by the NFL. The one thing that is certain is Shad’s commitment to the Jaguars and Jacksonville is as strong as ever.

Looking at talent as well as the depth behind them, we rank the most valuable players on the roster for the coming season. We also review last year’s top 10 and how they fared.

1. QB Blake Bortles

Size: 6-5, 232

Age: 23

Experience: Second season

Why he’s here: For the Jaguars to exceed their modest expectations, Bortles has to deliver a productive season. The talent on offense around Bortles is more experienced and, more importantly, better. Still, if backup Chad Henne had to run the show for a long stretch it would be hard to see the Jaguars not losing at least 12 games. The playoffs are a longshot. The biggest thing the Jaguars can realistically take away from this season is that they have their quarterback for the next decade.

2. MLB Paul Posluszny

Size: 6-2, 242

Age: 30

Experience: Ninth season

Why he’s here: The depth behind him is nonexistent. The Jaguars lost Posluszny for the final nine games last season after he tore his pectoral muscle. J.T. Thomas stepped in and did a decent job, but then was allowed to leave in free agency and signed with the New York Giants. Posluszny has made 1,063 tackles in his career and is the leader of the defense. The communication would greatly suffer without him in the lineup.

3. TE Julius Thomas

Size: 6-5, 260

Age: 27

Experience: Fifth season

Why he’s here: He scores touchdowns, at least in Denver. Nothing that we’ve seen in training camp leads us to believe he won’t do it often with the Jaguars as well once he returns from a broken hand. Thomas caught 24 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He’s the team’s best overall talent and should be a matchu*****ue for every defense the Jaguars face. The reason he isn’t tops on this list is the depth behind him. Veterans Marcedes Lewis and Clay Harbor provide excellent insurance for the Jaguars.

4. WR Allen Robinson

Size: 6-3, 210

Age: 21

Experience: Second season

Why he’s here: This team already has one young receiver who can’t stay healthy for long in Marqise Lee. Robinson has to start at least 14 games this season for the Jaguars to reach their offensive potential. He missed the final six games last season with a foot injury but averaged 4.8 receptions a game in his 10 outings. He’s been by far the most dynamic receiver in camp and should be targeted 120 times. His presence also opened things up for No. 2 receiver Allen Hurns.

5. LT Luke Joeckel

Size: 6-6, 306

Age: 23

Experience: Third season

Why he’s here: He’s playing a premium position. If Bortles is to succeed in his second year, Joeckel needs to step up his game in his third. Joeckel made strides last season, lasting a full 16 games after breaking his ankle in Week 5 of his rookie campaign. He’s gained strength this offseason. The offense can make a huge leap forward if new offensive line coach Doug Marrone can mold Joeckel into an above average left tackle. The depth is also shaky behind him, led by second-year player Josh Wells.

6. SS Johnathan Cyprien

Size: 6-0, 217

Age: 25

Experience: Third season

Why he’s here: Do you really want Josh Evans or Craig Loston as your starting strong safety? It could happen in Week 1 after Cyprien broke his finger in the preseason opener. Cyprien’s lofty ranking has more to do with the depth behind him than his talent. He has recorded 209 tackles in his first two years in the league and does bring a physical presence no other safety on the roster can match. Maybe Year 3 will produce more game-changing plays as well for the former 33rd-overall pick in the draft. That’s what’s keeping Cyprien from becoming a star.

7. DT Sen’Derrick Marks

Size: 6-2, 294

Age: 28

Experience: Seventh season

Why he’s here: Marks is the team’s best defender, leading the team in sacks last season with 8.5. So why is he seventh? Because the Jaguars are used to not having him. The defense has been without Marks all offseason after he tore his ACL in the season finale. The hope is that he’ll be ready for the opener. Certainly, there is a drop-off when Marks isn’t out there, but the team wouldn’t be blindsided if he went down again like it might be with other standouts.

8. RG Brandon Linder

Size: 6-6, 311

Age: 23

Experience: Second season

Why he’s here: Linder is the team’s best lineman, and coaches labeled him the most consistent performer last season as a rookie. He’s been excellent in training camp. So why is he eighth? Because right guard is not a premium position. The Jaguars could also likely get by at right guard with A.J. Cann or Austin Pasztor if needed.

9. OLB Telvin Smith

Size: 6-3, 218

Age: 24

Experience: Second season

Why he’s here: He’s becoming the defense’s top playmaker while also holding up physically. Smith was credited with 99 tackles as a rookie, including 63 in the final six games of the season once his role expanded. Smith also has a knack for big plays, a rarity right now on the Jaguars’ defense. There also isn’t another linebacker on the roster with his skills.

10. CB Aaron Colvin

Size: 6-0, 186

Age: 23

Experience: Second season

Why he’s here: The ability to play on the perimeter in base and inside in nickel packages is rare. Colvin’s value, already high after his surprising rookie season, has spiked over the last two weeks in training camp. Chances are Colvin could be a big riser on this board next year.

Roy Miller és T.J. Yeldon játéka még kérdéses, előbbi game time döntés lesz, utóbbi státuszáról talán picit hamarabb lesz döntés.

Wisniewski fog kezdeni most centerben, és némi meglepetésre Josh Evans helyett Craig Loston lesz a kezdő SS! Pedig Evans a héten nyilatkozott, hogy mennyire jól érzi magát SSben. Bár van egy olyan érzésem, hogy Cyp sérülése miatt mind Loston, mind Evans az 53as keret tagja lesz, könnyen lehet, hogy az egyiküktől akár búcsút is vehetünk nemsokára.

A DL vs OL pass rush drillekben egész jó dolgokat produkált, sok pozitív véleményt lehetett olvasni róla TC alatt. Remélem biztos a helye az 53ban, de ő az egyik komolyabb jelölt a védőfalemberekből, akinek egyszerűen nem jut hely.

Friss infók Marks és Lee gyógyulásáról. Úgy tűnik Lee sérülése komolyabbnak tűnt, mint az elsőre közölték, de mind az ő, mind Sen'Derrick játékára van esély a Panthers ellen.

Marks, Lee updates

Bradley updated the injury status of both defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks and receiver Marqise Lee on Wednesday.

Bradley described Marks’ recovery as “good.” The Jaguars are hopeful Marks can play in the opener after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in last season’s finale on Dec. 28. Marks’ 8.5 sacks led the Jaguars.

“He’s going to get tested just to see where his quad strength is,” Bradley said. “That’s a big reading for us to see where he’s at, but everything says that he’s right on schedule.”

Lee injured his hamstring two weeks ago. Bradley suggested for the first time Wednesday that the injury could take 6-8 weeks to recover from, before bringing that time table down to four weeks.

“Well, everything I hear, he’s making really good progress,” Bradley said. “Where you’re hoping for four weeks, could be 6-8 or somewhere in there. Everything now is back to where it’s four weeks to where it’s leaning more towards that. So, it’s a good sign.”

Van esélye megcsipni az 5. CB posztot. Az egyik pozitív meglepetésembere ő. Ha STben mondjuk a KR vagy PR posztot el tudná nyerni, szinte biztos helye lenne a kereten. Szerintem nagyon jó esélyei vannak arra, hogy keretre kerüljön.
