VIC BEASLEY

College: Clemson.

Position: Leo defensive end.

Age (on Sept. 1): 23.

The case for drafting Beasley: He can rush the quarterback.

Most draft experts don’t think Beasley is a 4-3 strong-side (Otto) linebacker, which wouldn’t make him a fit for the Jaguars. But for a team trying to get equal parts better and younger at the pass-rushing defensive end spot, Beasley would fill a need. The 6-foot-3 Beasley weighed 246 pounds at the combine.

It would make him the lightest Leo on the Jaguars. Chris Clemons is 254, Andre Branch is 265 and swing-guy Ryan Davis is 260. But Beasley makes up for it with his athleticism. Make Beasley a part of the Leo early-down rotation and then put him opposite Clemons (or Branch) on third down and the Jaguars’ pass rush would reach a new level.

Among defensive linemen at the combine, Beasley tied for most bench-press reps (35 at 225 pounds) and ran the fastest 40-yard dash (4.50 seconds) and three-cone drill (6.91 seconds). The three-cone drill is a good indicator of a player’s ability to change direction.

In four years at Clemson (48 games/25 starts), Beasley had 33 sacks and seven forced fumbles in 1,421 snaps.

Two things jump out watching Beasley’s video: his speed-to-power transition (quick first step that leads into a bull rush) and his spin move. In Clemson’s bowl game, he lined up at right defensive end and used a spin move to sack the Oklahoma quarterback in 2.19 seconds.

If Tennessee (or another team) takes Dante Fowler at No. 2, the Jaguars’ choice could come down to Beasley or Leonard Williams. Beasley’s pass-rush prowess could give him the edge.

AMARI COOPER

College: Alabama.

Position: Receiver.

Age (on Sept. 1): 21.

The case for drafting Cooper: The Jaguars need a No. 1 receiver.

The Jaguars are excited about the progress/potential of second-year receivers Allen Robinson, Marqise Lee and Allen Hurns. But there’s a reason why they were interested in Randall Cobb before he re-signed with Green Bay and hosted Greg Jennings for a visit before he signed with Miami: They need another receiver to complete the puzzle. Cooper is that guy.

As a third-year junior for Alabama, he led the nation with 124 catches (16 touchdowns).

In a five-game sample size from Cooper last year (a 135-play clip package), he played in the slot or as a part of a bunch formation 60 times, so he’s able to play inside and outside. With the Jaguars, he would be a physical inside receiver, allowing Robinson/Lee/Hurns to work outside.

Cooper has good hands (six drops last year) and is effective at all three levels of a route tree: short (quick passes caught behind the line), intermediate (crossing routes) and deep (he ran 4.42 seconds, which isn’t blazing, but knows how to use a double move to get open).

At the combine, his short shuttle of 3.98 seconds (fastest of any receiver participating) showed Cooper’s explosiveness. And he’s effective in the red zone — two touchdowns apiece against Florida and Ohio State.

Sure, this is a deep receiving class, and the Jaguars could get a good one if they trade down in the first round or wait until the second round. But if the goal is to help Blake Bortles succeed, Cooper should get the nod over a defensive player.

BUD DUPREE

College: Kentucky.

Position: Leo defensive end.

Age (on Sept. 1): 22.

The case for drafting Dupree: Size.

In selecting the 6-foot-4, 269-pound Dupree, the Jaguars would get the draft’s best Leo candidate. He has the athleticism needed, running a ridiculous 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the combine and had a 42-inch vertical jump. What puts Dupree over the top is he’s eight pounds heavier and an inch taller than Florida’s Dante Fowler. There is no debate where Dupree would best fit in coach Gus Bradley’s scheme.

Dupree is bigger than both current Leos: Chris Clemons (6-foot-3, 254 pounds) and Andre Branch (6-5, 265). He’s also younger than the 33-year old Clemons and more explosive than Branch, who posted a 4.70-second 40 time and 32.5-inch vertical at the 2012 combine.

What about production? You get it with Dupree. He started 38 games with 247 tackles, 23.5 sacks and 37 tackles for a loss with the Wildcats. Dupree was also a team captain and was honored for his work as a student-athlete in the community.

He’s also raw. The Jaguars stress development. Dupree has been productive with a limited repertoire as a pass rusher. His technique needs hard coaching, which Bradley and defensive line coach Todd Wash would provide. He’d fit perfectly as a player whose primary responsibility is rushing the passer and not dropping into coverage.

Dupree isn’t the best at his position yet compared to the other players in his draft class, but he could be in a year.

Hays Carlyon



DANTE FOWLER

College: Florida.

Position: Outside linebacker/Leo defensive end.

Age (on Sept. 1): 21.

The case for drafting Fowler: A versatile player who can be a centerpiece for a defense.

Fowler is supposedly more suited to play outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, but the Jaguars should project him as a perfect fit in their 4-3 scheme as a player who can rush the passer, set the edge against the run and drop into coverage.

Fowler could be on the board at No. 3 once Tampa Bay takes quarterback Jameis Winston and Tennessee either trades out of No. 2 or takes USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams.

The enticing things about Fowler: He’s only 20, has bounced around to different positions (experience in a 3-4 and a 4-3) and figures to be an ascending player.

Fowler’s numbers at Florida don’t jump off the page — 14.5 sacks in 37 games (25 starts), but the game video does.

At 261 pounds, he’s big enough to possibly play inside on pass-rushing downs and that would be a physical mismatch for a center, guard or running back. If he lines up outside, he has the power to run through a tackle and the moves to get around them.

Fowler’s 20-yard shuttle time of 2.51 seconds at the combine was fastest among defensive linemen. The Jaguars should take Fowler and after a transition period, make him the centerpiece of their pass-rush efforts.

TODD GURLEY

College: Georgia.

Position: Running back.

Age (on Sept. 1): 21.

The case for drafting Gurley: Many experts believe Gurley is the best running back in the draft since Adrian Peterson in 2007.

Here’s what Peterson did in his first four seasons in the league:

2007: 1,609 yards and 13 touchdowns.

2008: 1,885 yards and 10 touchdowns.

2009: 1,819 yards and 18 touchdowns.

2010: 1,639 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Think that would validate taking Gurley with the third-overall pick? If Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell believes Gurley is capable of giving the Jaguars four seasons like Peterson’s first four years, he’s absolutely worth the investment.

The 6-foot-1, 217-pound Peterson went on to post a 2,300-yard season (2012) and scored 37 times after the 2010 season, but for now, let’s focus solely on his first four seasons. Sure, Gurley (6-1, 222) is a running back with durability issues who could break down in his late 20s. However, if Gurley can produce at this level over a four-year stretch (being just 24 at the conclusion), he allows the Jaguars to put the offense on his back. The best way to help second-year quarterback Blake Bortles is to give him a dynamic running game.

Plus, there’s a chance Gurley can hold up for a decade. Frank Gore blew out both knees in college, yet has lasted over a decade in the league with nearly 2,800 career touches and 14,000 yards.

The running back might be de-valued, but that’s largely because backs like Gurley are so rare. He could be one of the five best backs in the league at the end of his rookie season.

LEONARD WILLIAMS

College: USC.

Position: Defensive lineman.

Age (on Sept. 1): 21.

The case for drafting Williams: He’s the best overall player in the draft, and you’re getting him at No. 3. How’s that for a good reason?

More? OK, here are two words for you — Reggie White. That’s who some experts compare Williams with because of his versatility and power. The Minister of Defense is a sacred cow in football. You just don’t hear prospects ever get compared to him. It’s unfair to Williams. White is second all-time with 198 sacks, made the Pro Bowl 13 times and was an eight-time first-team All-Pro pick.

If Williams accomplishes half of what White did, he’ll be a fantastic pro. Physically, Williams is impressive at 6-foot-5, 307 pounds with long arms. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.97 seconds. He also is still just 20. He’s just scratching the surface athletically.

Williams can begin his career at defensive tackle, helping the Jaguars overcome Sen’Derrick Marks’ Week 17 knee injury (torn ACL). Williams is a massive upgrade athletically over Ziggy Hood. Once Marks is recovered, the Jaguars could work Williams at Jared Odrick’s strong-side end spot as well, creating a rotation to keep the line fresh.

Ideally, Williams becomes a player the Jaguars can move around at tackle and end during the game to take advantage of matchups. His athleticism suggests he could fulfill that promise.

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell hasn’t drafted an interior defensive lineman with any of his 17 picks. It’s time to start developing at this position.

It’s also time to start making Colts quarterback Andrew Luck feel nervous when he plays the Jaguars.

Jaguars shooting for a star in draft after tumultuous recent past

Don’t tell Dave Caldwell there should be heightened tension around EverBank Field as he enters his third NFL draft as the Jaguars' general manager.
The Jaguars have seven wins in the last two seasons and Year 3 is usually need-to-show-progress-or-else time.

“I think we’ve had a sense of urgency since we’ve got here,” Caldwell said. “We’re continuing with the vision and plan we have.”

That vision-plan began with a floor-to-ceiling tear-down (only eight players remain from 2012 or earlier) that featured emphasizing the draft and also creating salary cap space for heavy 2015 free agent activity.

The next step is finding a stud Thursday night, be it at No. 3 or elsewhere in the first round.

With that in mind, Caldwell said this is “absolutely” a big draft for the Jaguars’ building efforts.

“Even bigger [than 2013-14] because we always want to out-do [the previous year],” he said. “We felt good about the first year, we felt really good about the second year and we want to feel even better about this year. That’s how you build sustainability.”

To achieve that, the Jaguars’ view of a Winning Weekend will be finding an eventual game-changer, a shift from the last two years, when they needed multiple draft picks to start immediately and if they turn into a star, so much the better.

“The general rule of thumb is, over time, you’d like your top three picks to be starters, whether it’s Day 1 or throughout the first two years,” Caldwell said. “And then hopefully, your fourth-, fifth-, sixth- and seventh-round picks end up being a starter, quality role player or backup player.”

Because the Jaguars feel their roster is in better shape than April 2013 or May 2014, it gives Caldwell more options.

Translation: Don’t rule out the Jaguars making a bold move to get into the back quarter of round 1 or, more likely, up in rounds 2-3 if they covet a player.

“I don’t think we need to trade back [from No. 3], considering what we did in free agency and where we are as a team,” Caldwell said. “If we use one of our picks to trade up and come away with less than seven players, I would feel good about that.”

Caldwell didn’t balk at a hypothetical that had the Jaguars trading a Day 3 pick (rounds 4-7) in order to move up on Night 2 (rounds 2-3).

“We’ve had a lot of conversations about the back end of the roster and we don’t want to swap out a developmental player for another developmental player, or a backup for a backup,” he said. “I’d really like to focus on front-line players for our roster.”

A front-line player could come at No. 3. It could also be available after a trade down (let’s say the Jets want to snap up Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota or another team wants to get ahead of Oakland to snag West Virginia receiver Kevin White). Including the Jaguars or not, expect trades in the top 13.

Since 1970, at least one pick in the top 13 has changed hands in every draft. Eighteen times, four or more top-13 picks have been traded.

In the Jaguars’ current neighborhood (Nos. 1-5), a pick has changed hands 15 times since 2000, including four of the top five in 2012.

Couple that with a crazy offseason of trades already (Sam Bradford, Nick Foles, Mike Wallace, Jimmy Graham, Max Unger, LeSean McCoy and Kiko Alonso, among others, have been dealt) and that could mean a wacky Thursday night.

“Trades happen because there is a player you badly want but everybody else at his position is gone and you’re five slots away from picking; then you better try and go up to get him," former NFL general manager Bill Polian said. "But that a lot of these fellas have already been aggressive tells you [trades may happen].”

Caldwell has made three draft-weekend trades: He moved down three spots in the fourth round with Philadelphia to pick up an extra seventh-rounder in 2013. Last year, he traded third- and fifth-round picks to San Francisco for a second-rounder he used on receiver Allen Robinson, and then traded fourth- and sixth-round picks to New England for a third-rounder he used on right guard Brandon Linder.

The Jaguars hit on both Robinson and Linder and the the 2014 draft has already produced more than 2013 draft. Others, citing data, disagree on the quality of Caldwell’s first two drafts.

NFL.com earlier this month examined the track record of current general managers landing draft picks on the All-Rookie team.

Among the general managers entering their third draft, Caldwell (0-for-17) trails Buffalo’s Doug Whaley (1-for-15), Kansas City’s John Dorsey (1-for-14), Arizona’s Steve Keim (2-for-16) and Carolina’s Dave Gettleman (3-for-11).

Caldwell was unaware of the data … and wasn’t impacted by it.

“I would say that, if we won eight or nine games, players like Brandon Linder and Telvin Smith, or if Aaron Colvin had played a full year, they would have had a chance,” he said. “I don’t put a lot of stock in that.”

Nor should he considering two common themes: Winning and the unscientific nature of the vote. The Chiefs, Cardinals and Panthers have all reached the playoffs during their general manager’s two-year tenure. And who votes on the team? That information wasn’t offered.

What we can offer is how many starts the Jaguars’ two draft classes have produced.

The eight-man 2013 class have combined to start 123 games, led by safety Johnathan Cyprien’s 30 starts. Only seventh-round cornerback Jeremy Harris hasn’t started a game and five players have started at least 13.

The nine-man 2014 class combined for 68 starts, led by Linder’s 15 and 13 apiece by quarterback Blake Bortles and center Luke Bowanko.

When the Jaguars open camp in August, 11 Caldwell-Bradley Era picks will be either starting or playing a major role: Cyprien, left tackle Luke Joeckel, cornerback Demetrius McCray and running back Denard Robinson from 2013 and Bortles, Robinson, Colvin, Linder, Smith, center Luke Bowanko (who will be competing for a starting spot) and receiver Marqise Lee.

If the Jaguars can hit on a play-making receiver or stud pass-rusher in this year's first round, just that one addition will make the draft successful.

Caldwell szerint az 1. körben lesz WR, a 2.ban RB run, de szerinte olyan mély az idei futó class, hogy a 4., de talán az 5. körben is lesznek még minőségi RBk. Vajon a 2. vagy a 3. körig várun, ha nem tudunk letradelni? Ha le tudunk, és a Cleveland a partner, aár Gurley is szóba kerülhet az 1. körben a 2. első körös pickkel.iktriad

Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell seems intent on keeping No. 3 pick in NFL draft


Among the estimated 200 players on the Jaguars’ draft board are a handful that general manager Dave Caldwell & Co. have finalized as possibilities if they use the third overall pick on Thursday night.
“We have 3-5 that we’ve zoned in on,” Caldwell said during Friday’s pre-draft luncheon at EverBank Field. “We have a pretty good direction of where we would go if we stay.”

The only direction we know the Jaguars aren’t going? Up … as trading into the top two. Everything else is a guess.

Toward a trade-down to acquire more picks? Maybe, although a read-between-the-lines conclusion makes that unlikely. Caldwell hasn’t received a phone call asking about the availability of the No. 3 pick.

“The price would have to be substantial,” he said. “We’d rather get one really good player instead of two good players.”

Toward a playmaking receiver such as Alabama’s Amari Cooper or West Virginia’s Kevin White?

Possibly, because the Jaguars’ offseason activity — new offensive coordinator, three new assistants, new tight end, new right tackle and new center — has been to give quarterback Blake Bortles every opportunity to succeed.

“This is one of the best receiving drafts I’ve seen in a long time,” Caldwell said.

Or toward a defensive player — USC’s Leonard Williams, Florida’s Dante Fowler, etc. — who can play one more than one position?

Potentially, because Williams could be the draft’s top player at two positions and Fowler could be a dynamic pass rusher. One and maybe both will be available when the Jaguars are on the clock.

Naturally, Caldwell wasn’t showing his figurative hand except to say he wants to draft a “difference-maker.”

The Jaguars need premium players, guys who can be game-changers. Is there one on offense right now besides tight end Julius Thomas? Are there any on defense?

Even though the Jaguars are likely accurate in their declaration about an improved roster, they can still go in multiple directions — the aforementioned plus running back, free safety and linebacker at any point of the draft — and not be subject to much second-guessing.

Caldwell said the fact the Jaguars believe they have their quarterback (Bortles) and left tackle (Luke Joeckel) in place leaves him in a “great situation” heading into the draft.

Digging into three hypotheticals:

Scenario A: Pass rusher in the first round. If Caldwell sticks to his theory on addressing big-time positions in the top part of the draft, he’ll go with Fowler (14.5 sacks in 37 games), who could split time at the strong-side linebacker spot (Otto) and weak-side defensive end position (Leo).

Going with Fowler at No. 3 would then allow Caldwell to address receiver in Round 2. He expects a run on receivers “probably [in the] first round and into the second.”

Scenario B: Receiver in the first round. Cooper caught 228 passes in three years for the Crimson Tide, including 124 last year. He showed he was effective in all three parts of the field – short, intermediate and deep.

Going Cooper at No. 3 would then allow Caldwell to take a pass rusher in the second round and a running back in the third round.

Scenario C: The best player available in the first round. Williams projects with the Jaguars as a three-technique defensive tackle (lined up over the guard’s outside shoulder) and could also kick out to defensive end (over the tackle’s inside shoulder or head-up).

Going with Williams at No. 3 would create the potential conundrum of what order does Caldwell address the other needs. How long can he wait to get a running back?

Caldwell projects a run on backs, “probably second [round], maybe third,” but the position’s depth could allow him to wait until the fourth round, “maybe even fifth,” to take one.

Oakland quarterback Derek Carr credited Olson with communicating effectively with him quickly last season when he was a rookie.

Bradley says he will give Olson the space needed to build that rapport.

"I try not to get too involved with it, with their one-on-one meetings," Bradley said. "Where the player asks the coach and coach asks the player. I think those meetings have been very beneficial. They get a feel for each other. What's important to one another? How they want to be coached and how the coach wants him to receive the information. All signs have been really good."
