“He easily could’ve been our pick had he been fully healthy. As the draft went on, and you get into the second round, the probability of some of those players making it that aren’t in the first round is a 50-50 proposition. We said, let’s take a guy that we know a lot about who is excellent talent. We have to take some risk. We have to close that talent gap and we won’t do it by being very conservative. Let’s take a risk on a guy that we know is a great worker, very diligent and he’s going to take care of his body. Had he been at UCLA this year, he would’ve been in spring ball on draft day. He’s ready to go and he hasn’t missed a practice yet knock on wood.”

Longevity with Jack’s knee:

“Look at Dante Fowler Jr. He never missed a practice or game at Florida. The first practice here he steps out on the field and tears his ACL. So, anytime these guys step on the field they’re at risk. A pre-existing condition is a little bit more concerning, but if the player is diligent and a hard worker who can take care of his body [it’s easier to accept]. Doctors are wrong too, just like scouts. It’s a matter of opinion. The risk was worth the reward at that point in time.”

Impact of free-agent signees Malik Jackson, Prince Amukamara and Tashaun Gipson:

“All those guys bring a presence. Not only those guys, but [free-agent addition running back] Chris Ivory. You saw it Thursday night. Boy, does he bring a presence in the run game. But, those three have brought veteran leadership. They’re tough, competitive and really have raised the level of talent on this team.”

Is quarterback Blake Bortles where you’d hoped:

“In some aspects he’s been a lot better. A lot of credit goes to him. He’s really worked on his craft. As soon as the season’s over, he has his plan ready. He’s really delved into the playbook. Unfortunately for him we switched coordinators after his first year. Last year, with the success he had in the system, this year he’s even night and day compared to last year. He really looks comfortable back there and is throwing the ball well.”

On offensive coordinator Greg Olson:

“In my time in Indianapolis, Tom Moore was there every year with Peyton Manning. Ideally, that’s a great situation to have. I’m sure if we have that type of success Greg Olson will be a head coach sometime here in the near future.”

Reaction to defensive end Dante Fowler’s first game:

“My emotions weren’t nearly as emotional as his. He’s worked really hard and done a lot of really good things in this offseason. He went to every meeting last year. Weightlifting at 6:30 in the morning. We treated that like a full season for him. But, the most surprising thing for me, the first day he went on the practice field, I don’t think the thought that he had knee surgery ever crossed his mind. He’s just hit the ground running and been 100 miles an hour since the first day he’s been on the field.”

How much debate about taking cornerback Jalen Ramsey at No. 5:

“I don’t think there was a lot of [debate], it was pretty unanimous. Probably my son being a FSU fan. He does like the Gators too. Dante’s trying hard to push him that way. We support both our Florida teams… We play no favorites. Jalen, we wanted to come out with an impact defensive player in the top five. This was the year we wanted to start focusing on crafting this defense and building it from the ground up.”

So, why him:

“He’s a rare athlete. You see him on the field being as big as he is, how he moves and how explosive he is. You don’t find guys like that that come along every year. Once every couple years, you get a player of that ability.”

On third-round defensive end Yannick Ngakoue:

“He and Dante will split time at that Leo position. In nickel, they’ll both play the ends. Both are athletic enough with their versatility they can drop into coverage and take tight ends man to man. They offer our coaches a lot of flexibility with game-planning on where to bring pressure and where to drop into coverage. He was a really good scheme fit for us. He had 13 ½ sacks at Maryland so the production was there. He beat three of the top offensive tackles in the draft for sacks. Those tackles are very good players. He played at a high level of competition and was productive. You need more than one pass rusher. We don’t have a lot of experience here, but we feel like we have a pretty good skill set in those young guys.”

On the left tackle situation with Luke Joeckel and Kelvin Beachum:

“Luke’s probably had his best camp since we’ve been here. I think it’s maturity in his growth and physical maturity. He showed really good game this past weekend [Jets]. All through camp he’s been competing. Competition helps that too, bringing Kelvin in, although Luke is not the type of guy who needs external motivation. So, it’s going to be a good battle over these next couple of weeks to see where that ends up. Luke has done a really nice job at left guard for us in the time he’s been there in practice. He didn’t play there this [game] because we were short on numbers. I expect him to play some left guard in the preseason. When we get Kelvin back, he did individual today, we’ll slowly bring him along.”

Is the third receiver spot wide open:

“Our three spots are a little in flux, because there is no true three. If we go slot, we have Rashad Greene and Bryan Walters that are really good slot receivers. Marqise Lee can take the top off but he’s outside so then you bring one of the Allens inside. All from our three-to-five spots, I think those guys are going to play quite a bit. Rashad is a dynamic punt returner, so that will be his focus and Bryan Walters does a really nice job on special teams too.”

A Bortles-Henne duónak 2 rossz passza volt összesen(16/14 199 yard), abból Bortles egyetlen incompeletja egy tökéletes TD passz volt, amit Julius elejtett....(Henne mondjuk egyszer időt kért rögtön egy időkérés után, hogy ne elegyen minden ennyire rózsás).

A futójáték rendeben volt, 3 sacket nyelt be az O-fal, köztük egyet a redzoneban a kezdőknél Shatley. Joeckel összességében elég jól tartotta magát LT-ben. Nem játszott egy snapet se LG-ben. Őké, nincs Wells, de ez mindent elmond, hogy Beachum térde mennyire jól lehet...


A WReink eléggé villogtak. ha A-Rob végigbírja a szezont, szerintem még a tavalyinál is több örömünk lehet benne. Az a 45 yardos elkapása nagyon szép volt.

V agy Tony Washington és Braendon Bowman. Utóbbi egy egykezes elkapással jelentkezett be egy roster spotért az 53ban. Jacons, Koyack és közte még szép harc lesz 2 helyért.

A futás korrekt volt. Most másodjára sikerült bevinni goal lineról a TDt. Emlékszünk tavaly ez mennyire nem ment. Ivory nagyon otthonosan mozgott a Metlifeban(még szép 😊 ) és jól kiegészítették egymást Yeldonnal.

Védelem. A kezdők Gipson és Ramsey nélkül képes volt egy félpályáról induló Jets támadást 3 & 10-re kényszeríteni és ott nem 1st engedni, hanem Ngakoue révén sackeltük Fitzmagicet! 3 sackünk volt, köztünk Björn Werner is összehozott egyet! Michael Bennett, kihasználva hogy nincs Day is begyüjtött egyet.

Colvinnak van egy zúzódása, de úgy tűnik ennyivel megúsztuk a dolgot. #fingerscrossed.

Ficken impressive so far in training camp

Jaguars kicker Sam Ficken was so sure another call would come that he passed up steadier job opportunities and just kept kicking. Even as months passed with little indication another team would look to bring him in, Ficken remained confident his career wasn’t finished.

“I’ve always been the kid that when I see there are other kickers out there that are available that are better than me, that’s when it is time to hang it up,” he said. “I haven’t seen that yet, and obviously I’m happy to be down here and just show what I can do and maybe get a foot in the door.”

The chance Ficken so steadfastly believed would eventually come finally did when the Jaguars signed him July 25 to fill out their 90-man roster.

Jason Myers, who won a kicking competition with Josh Scobee last preseason, went 26 of 30 on field goals but missed a league-high seven extra points.

Ficken is a longshot to beat out Myers, but he has made the most of his time in Jacksonville and is auditioning well for other teams around the league.

Ficken was perfect during practice – including a 6-for-6 effort last Tuesday – until his 63-yard attempt clanked off the right upright Sunday. He had started the segment by hitting field goals of 26, 33, 33, 42 and 49 yards.

“So far, so good,” Ficken said last week. “Hopefully I can keep that going.”

Just keep going has been Ficken’s mindset for years now. He connected on 24 of his 29 tries (82.8 percent) as a senior at Penn State during the 2014 season but wasn’t taken in the 2015 draft. Kansas City brought him in for a tryout last offseason but ultimately chose to stick with Cairo Santos.

That meant Ficken headed back to State College.

Working almost exclusively alone — Ficken does seek advice from Chicago kicker Robbie Gould regularly — he kicked about 30 field goals a day while also spending time in the program’s weight room to keep getting stronger. With nobody else around to push him, Ficken relied on himself.

“There are certain days where it’s pretty tough to motivate yourself,” Ficken said. “You see your teammates move on and go to the NFL or start their respective careers while I’m just putting my life on pause. That was the toughest part.”

“If someone asks what is a Jaguar, what do we represent, I want them to say Telvin Smith,” Smith said. “I want to show that in every way, in every shape, form and fashion, that I will go all out at all times for this organization. That’s my biggest goal. To be so Jagged-In to our standard that people say we know without a doubt he’s going hard for us.”

“A new contract is not constantly in my thought process,” Smith said. “It’s not, because I understand that if I do what I’m supposed to do then everything else will take care of itself. Ha Jackre MLB-ként számítunk(úgy tűnik jelenleg ez a helyzet), akkor Telvin lehet a következő Jags játékos, aki hosszabbíthat. De ha Jackre mondjuk a másik két LB poszt valamelyikén számítunk at nem jönne jön Telvinnek.

Smith’s 227 tackles over his first two years is an impressive number, but he has work to do as well. His big plays didn’t increase last season, finishing with a ½ sack more (2 ½), the same amount of interceptions (one) and no fumble recoveries.

“There’s a lot of disruption going on, especially up front,” Smith said. “We’re going to see a lot from Malik and Dante. Sen’Derrick is getting healthy, J.O. [Odrick], Sheldon Day, all of our guys. We are going to have a tremendous d-line. … The ball is coming out quicker, so now we’re setting up faster, trying to get the route faster. It’s definitely going to be a test to see who is going to make more plays.”

Gus és Telvin szerint is jó TC-je van Smithnek (volt pár pickje pl.)

“Camp is going real well,” Smith said. “I’m making plays, seeing things that I didn’t see last year. I’m just reacting faster. Formation recognition is real big right now. Reading the quarterback when I’m getting out in my drop is real big right now, just flying all over the field.”

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley is seeing a more seasoned player in Smith.

“He’s got a better understanding,” Bradley said. “We challenged him, like we did the whole team, about consistency. You saw really good flashes, but then there’d be a play here or a play there that would give up an explosive play. So, he’s really concentrating on that and his run fits, becoming a complete player.”

“You can see him just playing with more poise,” Bradley said. “Where he understands what his job is before the play, so he can concentrate on looking at formations and tendencies.”

Remélhetőleg a védelem megerősítése az ő játékára is jó hatással lesz, és idén végleg a klasszisok közé emelkedik. Igaz akkor nem lesz túl olcsó újraszerződtetni, de ezen ráérünk később problémázni.

Bortlesnek nem ez volt a legjobb napja. bár egy gyönyörű passzal kezdett Thomasnak, túldobta a töküresen álló Bennt és az utolsó 11 vs 11-es drivejában 4 imcompleteja is volt.

Ramseyt ma elküldtük Blitzelni Bortles ellen és működött a dolog.

5 dolog amit megtudtunk a TC kezdete óta az idei Jaguarsról:

1. Better players has equaled more competitive practices.

Two things spice up training camp: A competitive period (two-minute, tight red zone, etc.) and good players on offense and defense.

Last year, the emerging offense held the usual advantage over an out-manned defense that ended the season 31st in points allowed.

Through a week-and-a-half of camp this year, the rebuilt defense has challenged the returning offense.

On Tuesday, the starting offense ran the two-minute drill for the first time in camp. Bortles completed four straight passes to cross midfield before the defense bowed up – Aaron Colvin broke up a pass on third down and Prince Amukamara (against Allen Hurns) didn’t give an inch on fourth down.

On Thursday, the first segment of 11-on-11 was a “backed up,” situation (close to the goal-line). Bortles’ first pass was intercepted by linebacker Telvin Smith, who returned it for a touchdown. On Chad Henne’s second snap, strong safety James Sample deflected a pass that was picked off by cornerback Dwayne Gratz.

“The defense has gotten better so the windows are even more tighter than they were last year, which is only good and is only going to help us out,” Bortles said.

2. Bortles’ 11-on-11 statistics are not concerning.

Through Friday night, Bortles had played 151 snaps of 11-on-11 and completed 53 of 93 attempts (56.9 percent) and four interceptions.

The percentage isn’t ideal, but shouldn’t be cause for concern. During the practices, he has thrown into tight windows, which invites pass break-up and the defensive linemen are taking regular gambles trying to bat down passes.

The best part about Bortles’ camp so far is he is showing consistent body language; the first two years, you could tell when he was having a sub-par practice. And there haven’t been any consistent issues with the operation – guys are lining up in the right places so Bortles is delivering the play properly.

“I’ve been very, very pleased with Blake; very excited about him,” Bradley said. “He has a stronger command of the offense and he’s playing with good poise. If there’s a mistake made, he reacts quicker to it and recovers quicker from it.”

3. It’s OK to be excited about Fowler and Ngakoue.

Through six padded practices, defensive ends Dante Fowler and Yannick Ngakoue have been eye-popping.

Yes, it’s only early August and yes, the Jaguars haven’t played another team. But it’s fine to be pumped up about the duo who will line up opposite each other in pass-rushing situations.

“They definitely have speed, high motors, high energy, very smart and they take coaching very well,” defensive tackle Malik Jackson said.

In one-on-one pass rushing drills entering Friday, Fowler was 5-4 and Ngakoue 6-3.

4. The revamped secondary has impressed.

After a practice last week, the defensive back section of the locker room was whooping it up about something.

One veteran non-defensive back Jaguars player laughed and said: “They didn’t used to talk much over there.”

They didn’t have reason to.

But the long ago revamping of the secondary during the offseason – Amukamara and free safety Tashaun Gipson in free agency and cornerback Jalen Ramsey fifth overall in the draft – has already made an impression. Interceptions during 11-on-11 have come from Amukamara, Davon House, Dwayne Gratz and James Sample.

The Jaguars didn’t create a turnover Friday, but Bradley has seen improvement.

“The last three or four days, our coverage has been a lot tighter – they’ve been challenging throws and we’ve put a lot of work into that in the red zone,” he said.

5. The Jaguars are in decent shape health-wise.

Knock on wood, folks. Not participating Friday were House (hamstring), receiver Marqise Lee (hamstring), running back Jonas Gray (leg), receiver Shaq Evans (leg), center Brandon Linder (groin), defensive tackle Sheldon Day (back) and left tackle Kelvin Beachum (knee).

Most concerning are Beachum and Linder, the presumptive starting left tackle and no-doubt starting center, respectively.

Linder has missed three straight workouts. When he was healthy, he was 5-1 in one-on-one pass protection drills. Beachum has also missed the last three days and even when he was on the field, was limited in his activity (no one-on-one drills).
