Jaguars score six on first day of free agency ... and may not be done

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell promised to be aggressive when the free agent market opened, and he delivered Tuesday.
Six players have reportedly agreed to terms to join the Jaguars: Denver tight end Julius Thomas, Dallas right tackle Jermey Parnell, Miami defensive end Jared Odrick, San Francisco linebacker Dan Skuta, Green Bay cornerback Davon House and Indianapolis free safety Sergio Brown.

Leading the way in guaranteed money are Thomas ($24 million), Odrick ($22 million) and Parnell ($13 million).

The salary cap ramifications won’t be known until the contracts are finalized, which is expected to happen Wednesday after the newcomers arrive in Jacksonville and pass their physicals.

The Jaguars weren’t commenting Tuesday night, electing to wait until the contracts are signed. When the deals are official, it will be time to ask the questions:

■ How does adding Thomas and Odrick impact the status of Marcedes Lewis and Red Bryant?

■ What did they see in Parnell’s six 2014 starts to convince them he was worth $13 million guaranteed?

■ Does House’s arrival push Dwayne Gratz and/or Demetrius McCray into reserve/sub-package roles, assuming Aaron Colvin is an every-down cornerback?

■ Will Brown’s signing help them use strong safety Johnathan Cyprien more to his strengths?

■ How much 2015 salary cap space remains (they started the day with $64 million-plus)?

What we do know: Caldwell’s half-dozen represented the biggest single-day haul in Jaguars free agent history. And the team remains in the running for free agent running back DeMarco Murray.

Thomas, 26, is the biggest prize of the class. Last in scoring in 2014 (15.6 points per game) and getting little big-play production from the tight end position (10 catches of at least 16 yards and only four touchdowns), the Jaguars decided early to target the former Denver Broncos All-Pro. On his five-year, $46 million deal, Thomas becomes the Jaguars’ highest-paid player.

A matchup migraine for defenses — do they put a cornerback/safety or linebacker on him? — because of his 6-foot-4, 258-pound frame, Thomas had 24 touchdown catches the last two years. In 2014, nine of his touchdowns were in the red zone.

“He’s a hard matchup in the passing game,” New England coach Bill Belichick said before the Broncos-Patriots game in November. “He does a lot of damage, particularly in the red area, but really anywhere.”

The other pending signing on offense is also a former college basketball player. Parnell played only year of football at Ole Miss and bounced between New Orleans and Miami before landing with Dallas in 2010. He is 6-foot-6, 315 pounds, and a tough, ascending player with no injury history.

“How he transformed himself, made himself, converted himself into an offensive lineman, it’s a story that needs to be told because this guy has come a long, long ways,” former Cowboys offensive line coach Bill Callahan said in January. “I love the guy. He works his butt off. Everything he does, he’s a pro.”

If Parnell is a free agent hit, it will end years of instability at right tackle. Now-former starter Austin Pasztor re-signed with the team Tuesday, and the early guess is he’ll either be the backup swing tackle or move inside to guard as a depth option.

Shifting over to defense, the Jaguars were more active than anticipated. In the last two free agency seasons, they have signed seven players to help rebuild a unit that ranked 27th in 2013 and 26th last year.

Odrick, whose reported average salary of $8.5 million makes him the highest paid player on defense, won’t be a sack stud (he has 16.5 in 64 career games), but the Jaguars hope he provides more production in the run game and a little bit of a pass rush.

Bryant, who started all 16 games at Odrick’s spot last year, is due a $500,000 roster bonus Sunday. His release would create $4.5 million in salary cap space.

The Jaguars’ attempt to find an answer at the strong-side (Otto) linebacker spot was not a shocker. J.T. Thomas was an option to compete there, but he was allowed to hit free agency and agreed to a three-year, $12 million contract with the New York Giants.

Enter Skuta, who played four years with the Bengals and the last two with the 49ers. He has started 22 of 86 games but emerged as a replacement for the suspended Aldon Smith last year. Skuta will reportedly get five years and $20.5 million. The Jaguars are projecting that Skuta can transition from a 3-4 outside linebacker for the 49ers and to a 4-3 Otto backer. Skuta has a fan in former 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh.

“He’s very much to me like a young captain in the military would be,” Harbaugh said last August. “He’s a leader. He’s got a very strong will and is disciplined. Just everything that you’d want.”

Adding House and Brown in the secondary instantly gives the group more experience. House, 25, played for current Jaguars defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker at New Mexico State. He started only 14 of 40 games for the Packers and has never played more than 500 snaps in a season.

House (whose deal is reportedly four years, $25 million) was averaging 27 snaps a game in 2014 until a busted shoulder blade cost him three games. He has 112 tackles and one interception in his career.

Brown, 26, became an option at free safety when the Jaguars were unable to lure Devin McCourty away from the Patriots. Brown’s deal is for a reported $9 million over three years.

Brown was a career reserve for New England and Indianapolis until 2014, when LaRon Landry was suspended for four games. Brown ended up starting eight games and playing 539 snaps.

With several needs addressed, the Jaguars are expected to remain active throughout the week. That includes pursuing Murray, who won the NFL rushing title last year (1,845 yards) with Dallas. He is reportedly speaking to the Jaguars, Philadelphia and Oakland.
