I’m going to get ahead of this narrative now.

The Raiders promoting Rob Leonard shouldn’t be looked at as a hire to appease Maxx Crosby.

As I said a few days ago, Leonard helped develop unheralded D-line players over the years (K’Lavon Chaisson, Charles Snowden, Jonah Laulu). Tonka Hemingway showed flashes as a rookie. Thomas Booker IV became a solid addition from Philly.

People want stars everywhere, but you don’t get there without early development.

Leonard deserves this opportunity, independent of Crosby’s situation.


Again, for context.

In 2025, Raiders played from behind a lot so teams ran the ball a lot on them by late 3rd/early 4th quarter. (Sometimes right after halftime).

They were 17th in rush yards allowed.

But Raiders were tied for 2nd behind only the Seahawks in rushing yards allowed per carry (3.9).

(Rob Leonard was the run game coordinator last season).


During the 2022 season, Rob Leonard coached a year under Mike Macdonald, who was the DC in Baltimore.

2019-21, Leonard coached under Brian Flores, who’s looked at as one of the NFL’s best defensive play-callers, his units get after it.

I wouldn’t lump Leonard as a Pat Graham/Pete Carroll style guy.

The #Raiders are interviewing #Packers defensive line coach and run game coordinator DeMarcus Covington for their vacant defensive coordinator job, per The Insiders.

Covington was the #Patriots defensive coordinator in 2024 before moving to Green Bay.

The Raiders will interview Seahawks safeties coach Jeff Howard on Saturday for their defensive coordinator job, per sources.

Howard worked with new Raiders coach Klint Kubiak in Minnesota and Seattle, where he has been a valued assistant with the Super Bowl champs.

#Rams AHC and passing game coordinator Aubrey Pleasant has been requested to interview for the #Raiders DC job and will be meeting with them today, source said.

The Raiders are interviewing Seahawks WRs coach Frisman Jackson for their offensive coordinator job, per source.



The Raiders are hiring Mike McCoy as assistant head coach, per sources.

McCoy, 53, spent four years as the Chargers’ head coach and finished last season as the Titans’ interim coach. An experienced addition to Klint Kubiak’s staff.

Very notable, as Leonard is one of the coaches Maxx Crosby respects the most in the building. Leonard has had interest from other teams this cycle.
