Szerintetek a center posztra mi lesz a megoldás? Jön-e még oda valaki? Bow játéka nem volt rossz anno. A guard--> center váltásnak én nem örülnék: ha már van két ígéretes guardunk, akkor ne bssuk már el. Egy jó centerrel pedig igencsak jó falunk lehet, hiszen már van két jó tackle-ünk is (Bocs Joeckel)

Wisniewski még mindig FA, szóval visszajöhet ő is. Bowanko vagy Shatley is lehet center. De sajna túl sokat mondják, hogy Linder kiköthet center poszton ahhoz, hogy ez csak egy kósza ötlet legyen.

Joeckel’s value

The Jaguars must decide by early May whether to pick up left tackle Luke Joeckel’s fifth-year option. If they do, his 2017 salary is guaranteed for injury only.

But with the arrival of Beachum, the Jaguars should decline to pick up Joeckel’s option for one reason: He would have trade value.

Let’s say we get to mid-August and another team loses their left tackle and is desperate for a replacement. The Jaguars could secure a Day 2 (rounds 2-3) or Day 3 (rounds 4-7) pick for Joeckel and a trade would result in a $3,449,836 cap hit and $3,296,127 in cap savings.

If the Jaguars pick up Joeckel’s option, I doubt a team would be willing to trade for him knowing his 2017 salary would be fully guaranteed in the event of an injury.

Left tackle may not be a training camp competition for the Jaguars — it will be Kelvin Beachum’s job to lose assuming he comes back from his knee injury.
That leaves strong safety as the most compelling preseason battle.

The incumbent is Johnathan Cyprien, the former second-round pick entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract.

The challenger is James Sample, a 2015 fourth-round pick.

On the surface, Cyprien would be the odds-on favorite to retain the position. He has 44 games (all starts) and 316 tackles. Sample played four games as a rookie (two starts) before a shoulder injury and had 13 tackles.

But if that was that easy, the Jaguars would have hinted Cyprien would remain the starter. Instead, they’re saying how excited they are about Sample.

“We’ve seen flashes of Sample,” coach Gus Bradley said. “His instincts — he’s a very good football player. In similar ways to Dante [Fowler], Sample is like another draft pick coming in.”

The knock against Cyprien are big ones: His tackling (team-high 21 misses last year) and his lack of impact plays (two interceptions, three forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one sack in his NFL career).

The Jaguars are banking on Cyprien — if he wins the job — being more effective as a box safety because newcomer Tashaun Gipson can handle the deep middle part of the field.

“We took a look at him and divided it when he was close to the line of scrimmage and when he was [deep],” Bradley said. “Where did he play better and was more consistent? Being in the box allowed him to utilize his skill set.”

The prediction: If Sample stays healthy, he wins the job and the coaches find a new role for Cyprien that still has him on the field in certain situations.

Caldwell beszélt a pass rusher helyzetről, szerinte előrébb vagyunk most, mint a szezon zárásakor...

“If the season started tomorrow, we would have three pass rushers we didn’t have last year,” Dave Caldwell said.

The coach, though, sounded like reinforcements are required.

“When we have those three guys, we feel we’re considerably better on third down and on first and second downs, too, in generating a pass rush,” Caldwell said.

Again, interesting.

Because it’s unlikely the original offer to Nortman was one year before jumping to the signed four-year pact, it’s an easy assumption that Anger turned down a multi-year deal from the Jaguars. Having to settle for a one-year deal with Tampa Bay should be viewed as a lost gamble by Anger.

I asked Caldwell if it was rare for an agent to refuse to negotiate.

“Some agents do business differently,” Caldwell said. “We were honest and said, ‘Hey, this is a deal, and if you want to negotiate with us, maybe we can come to an agreement. If you don’t want to negotiate, we have to go to another option.’

“The organization had invested a third-round pick in Bryan, and we owed it to him and the organization to try and keep him here. But apparently, we were off a lot by what we expected and they expected.”

Mission mostly accomplished.
That was the message delivered Tuesday morning by Jaguars coach Gus Bradley after the opening phase of free agency produced seven signings.

“We talked about having some very good players and then adding more very good players to that group,” Bradley said at the Boca Raton Resort, site of this week’s league meeting. “And we think we did that.”

During a 114-question, 60-minute session, two themes were often brought up by Bradley: The need to be better on third down defensively and the requirement to have a sustainable running game.

Four of the newbies specifically fall into those two areas: defensive tackle Malik Jackson, running back Chris Ivory, free safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Prince Amukamara.

■ Jackson was the center-piece of the Jaguars’ class, the co-top target along with defensive end Olivier Vernon, who signed with the Giants. Jackson will transition back to a 4-3 scheme, although Denver’s 3-4 scheme used four down linemen on third down and Jackson lined up inside.

The ideal scenario: Sen’Derrick Marks returns to his 2013-14 form and splits base-down snaps with Jackson, an at-times wrecking ball for Denver last year.

Bradley on Jackson: “You look at his qualities and he’s a very disruptive [defensive tackle], but he has position flexibility. Some of the things we can do with him is move him around and then obviously, on third down and nickel, we can get him and a guy like Sen’Derrick on the field at the same time.”

■ Admitting Denard Robinson isn’t a No. 2 tailback, the Jaguars moved quickly to sign Ivory, whose 1,070 yards rushing were fifth-most in the NFL last year.

The ideal scenario: Ivory and T.J. Yeldon form a smash-and-dash type of combo at tailback and give the Jaguars a solid running game for the first time since Maurice Jones-Drew won the rushing title in 2011. The Jaguars also hope Yeldon will be fresher throughout the season and stay healthy.

Bradley on Ivory: “ his toughness. He’s a very violent, violent runner. I know when we prepared for him and played him [last year], he was a style of runner that our team needs and our team will feed off of. He’s a good complement. Nowadays, it’s ideal to have two backs. There was a game last year when T.J. played over 70 snaps [77 at Indianapolis], and we just felt like if we could change that up and give defenses a different style of runner, it’s always important.”

■ The biggest addition could be Gipson. The Jaguars spent three years trying to find an answer, and they finally feel they’ve found it. Gipson has 14 career interceptions.

The ideal scenario: Gipson shows he can function as the only deep safety, allowing the Jaguars to play strong safeties Johnathan Cyprien or James Sample closer to the line of scrimmage.

Bradley on Gipson: “Our thought is to have guys like Cyprien and Sample close to the box a higher percentage of the time. And with that, a guy like Gipson can play back and play sideline to sideline and be an open-field tackler. He has those traits, and his ability is to be a ball-hawk. That fits him back there as our single safety.”

■ Two days after the market opened, the Jaguars signed Amukamara to a one-year contract. A former first-round pick, he has played all 16 games just once in five years.

The ideal scenario: Amukamara stays healthy throughout camp and starts opposite Davon House and allows the Jaguars to play Aaron Colvin full-time as the inside cover corner in sub-package situations.

Bradley on Amukamara: “He plays with really good length at the line of scrimmage. He’s extremely competitive, and in our conversations and watching film with him, I just thought he really fit our style.”

The seven free agents in the fold, the Jaguars will now focus on how to use their eight draft picks.
