Hays Carlyon, az FTU másik Jags beatwritere szerint igen érdekes játszma van kibontakozóban Caldwell és Titans GMje, Ruston Webster között a 2. és a 3. pick kapcsán. Carlyon szerint nekünk az lenne a legjobb, ha Mariota kimenne 1/2n (vagy a Titans draftolja - mondjuk ennek annyira én nem örülnék - vagy egy másik csapat), és így Leonard Williams a Jaguarsba kerülne.

Jaguars, Titans in a game of intrigue

Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell wants it known that he’s willing to trade down.
Why? My bet is he wants Tennessee to take Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota.

There’s a fascinating draft subplot this year involving the Titans and Jaguars, a draft within a draft between Caldwell and Titans general manager Ruston Webster.

The Jaguars hold the third pick, one spot back of their AFC South rival.

Assuming Tampa Bay takes Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, the real draft intrigue begins with the Titans.

Tennessee could elect to pass on Mariota and gamble on quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who played fairly well as a rookie after being drafted in the sixth round. The problem is Mettenberger can’t stay healthy dating back to his days at LSU.

Webster noted Tennessee needs a quarterback that can hold up at the NFL Scouting Combine last week.

“For us to move forward the quarterback position has to be settled,” Webster said. “You have to know that they can go for 16 games.”

Just ask the Rams about Sam Bradford.

If the Titans move forward with Mettenberger, they can entertain trade offers or likely take a defensive lineman. Southern California’s versatile Leonard Williams would make the most sense.

Williams also would be a dynamic upgrade for the Jaguars. That’s why I think Caldwell spoke openly about trading down.

The best scenario for the Jaguars is for Tennessee to take Mariota. Webster might be more apt to do it if he feels that by letting Mariota go, he’ll be creating a possible treasure trove for the Jaguars.

If Tennessee drafts Mariota, the trade possibility for the Jaguars suffers dramatically. Caldwell acknowledged that the market would be more favorable if Mariota was on the board at No. 3.

Don’t expect the Titans to tip their hand. Any advance information of what their plans are only helps the Jaguars prepare. Tennessee will try to leave Caldwell minutes, not days or even hours, to finalize a deal.

I think Caldwell is hoping to land Williams at three. The only way that would happen is if the Titans decide Mariota is their guy.

Caldwell is putting pressure on Webster with his comments. If Tennessee selects Williams, the Jaguars could trade the third pick to a team that covets Mariota. The Jaguars could move down considerably (perhaps as far as 20 in a deal with the Eagles) and still land a high-quality edge rusher, in addition to the trade compensation.

That’s not a bad fate, but my gut feeling is Caldwell would prefer to just take Williams and call it a day.

The gamesmanship will be fascinating leading up to April 30.

■ The boldest move the Jaguars could make with the third overall pick (merely keeping it doesn’t count): drafting West Virginia receiver Kevin White. He ran the third-fastest 40-yard dash among the receivers Saturday (4.35 seconds, behind only UAB’s J.J. Nelson at 4.28 and Miami’s Phillip Dorsett at 4.33) and projects as a take-the-top-off-the-defense threat. The Jaguars don’t have that kind of guy — I like Marqise Lee more as he was used last year — get the football in his hands as quickly as possible and let him run. One knock on White is he’s a one-year wonder. He played two years of junior college before a 35-catch debut for the Mountaineers in 2013. But the pressure with the Jaguars wouldn’t be on him to catch 85 passes as a rookie.

■ General manager Dave Caldwell is “more open” to move down than the last two years, but the bet here is he stays put. It’s tough to see a team right now that looks desperate to move up. Do the Jets (No. 6) move up to No. 3 to guarantee they get Marcus Mariota? Does Chicago (No. 7), even while keeping Jay Cutler, leap-frog the Jets for Mariota? And who the heck knows what’s going on in Cleveland. The Browns have Nos. 12 and 19 (the second pick via the Sammy Watkins trade last year) and maybe they’re ready to move on from Johnny Manziel and let Brian Hoyer walk.

■ The Jaguars have a “We’re not worried,” stance for defensive tackles Sen’Derrick Marks (ACL) and Roy Miller (meniscus), who are both rehabilitating after knee surgery. It’s fine not to be worried, but the reality is that big guys may not immediately get their burst back after a lower-body injury. Miller is a two-down player, but Marks has been an every-down player the last two years and even if he’s active for Week 1, his playing time may be limited (he averaged 46.2 snaps in the 15 games he started and finished).

■ Jaguars coach Gus Bradley admitted that the new offensive coaching staff may have different views on certain players than the previous staff. Translation: Player A, who was written off as gone, might now be in the mix. The big name, of course, is tight end Marcedes Lewis. I’d still be surprised if he’s back. One example Bradley used is if new coordinator Greg Olson wants an extra offensive tackle instead of an extra tight end for run-game situations.

■ One of the great mysteries (besides the fan base’s infatuation with suspended receiver Justin Blackmon) is why they think tight end Julius Thomas isn’t worth an average contract of $8 million to $9 million a year. Thomas has 24 touchdown catches the last two years. The Jags have 31 as a team in that span. Put that $62 million of cap space to use.

■ The Jaguars think their coaching staff and positive environment (“I think it’s an attractive place,” Caldwell said) will mean free agents will semi-gloss over the 3-13 record last year and long road to playoff contention. Money talks, though. Even Bradley said there isn’t time for a big sell job when free agency opens — maybe a phone conversation. The Jaguars will have to pay 120-130 cents on the dollar to get some of the big guys. Green Bay receiver Randall Cobb reportedly wants $9 million per year? The Jaguars should offer $10 million and sign him at 4:02 p.m. on March 10.

■ Both Caldwell and Bradley were asked during their news conferences about running back Storm Johnson, who had 29 carries as a rookie but was mostly a healthy scratch. I would be stunned if Johnson is on the Week 1 53-man roster, just I was stunned his name was brought up.

■ When I asked Bradley if it is fair to characterize the Jaguars’ offseason plan as adding experience on offense and youth on defense, he said: “Looking from the outside, I could see that comment being made. You could see that, but if there’s a good offensive player in the draft, we’re going to take him.”

■ The Jaguars say they want to be “run first,” — that was the key during the offensive coordinator search. That means they need a feature back, and the second round is the best place to find one. They pick No. 36 and then not until No. 67. Caldwell has no extra picks to make a move into the 50s or 60s like he did last year, so No. 36 is the best spot to get a back.

INDIANAPOLIS – The last two years, Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell stayed at Nos. 2 and 3 to draft left tackle Luke Joeckel and quarterback Blake Bortles, respectively, as opposed to moving down.

The Jaguars are again drafting third this year and Caldwell said this morning at the Scouting Combine a trade-down scenario could be enticing.

“I feel more open to it this year because we don’t need to have a guy come in and start,” Caldwell said. “We had no margin for error the last two years. We had to draft them and start them.”

Caldwell said it could go down to the wire in knowing if a deal can be made.

“You probably know maybe the few minutes you’re on the clock, for the most part,” he said. “Last year, Buffalo wanted to trade up for Sammy Watkins and that came out of nowhere. Certain teams are different. Some will say, ‘Hey, we have a significant interest in coming up and this is what we want to do.’ Other teams that will wait for the last minute and that’s more difficult.”

Caldwell also said Atlanta made an offer that would have allowed the Jaguars to move down to the sixth pick, but they didn’t want to lose their chance at taking Bortles.

Caldwell was asked if the Jaguars’ pick would have more value if one of the two quarterbacks – Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota – was on the board when they were on the clock.

“I would expect so,” Caldwell said. “You don’t really know how other teams are valuing those guys. Conversely, last year, teams didn’t know how much we valued Blake.”

Caldwell egyébként nem szereti a FA időszakot, mert sokszor már az előtt aláír pár ember (lásd tavaly Beadles és Gerhart) mielőtt először találkoztak volna. Mint mondta, FAben sokkal nagyobb a hibahatár, mint a drafton szerinte.
A letradedel kapcsolatban annyit mondott, hogy idén már nincs olyan needünk, amit 1/3as pickkel orvosolni kell, ezért sokkal nyitottabb a letradere és szerezni még több picket, mint az elmúlt 2 évben. Természetesen vannak needjeink, de idén úgy tudunk majd a draftra menni, hogy tényleg lehessen már korán BAPzni. Egyébként ez azt mondatatja nekem, hogy nincs Joeckel/Bortles szintű ember, akit már kinézett hónapokra előre magának idén a prospectek között.
Mostantól tényleg el lehet kezdeni drukkolni, hogy a Titans ne Mariotat vigye(már csak azért is, mert nem szeretném őt látni a diviziónkban), és akkor össze is jöhet a dolog.
Ha Leonard Williamst viszik el 1/2n (na annak se örülnék mondjuk...), akkor meg pláne örülnék egy letradenek, főleg a mai combine DE mérlegelések után...Egyébként Randy Gregory egyre kevésbé vonzó prospect (és nemcsak az alúlméretezettsége, hanem a sérülései miatt is).

A legfontosabb: Caldwell azt mondta, ha olyan FA lesz, akit nagyon akar a Jags akkor Caldwell MINDET megtesz, hogy idehozza. Az is monda, hogy nem költünk azért, csak hogy költsünk, de nagyon agresszívek leszünk jövő hónapban!
Azt mondta a védelmi stáb már teljesen felmérte a keretet és az védelmi FAket. Az offensenél a következő 2 hétben kerül erre sor a 4 új edző miatt.
Stormról ma is kérdeztek (valaki ott van a UCFről? 😀), Dave azt modta nagy dolgokat vár tőle idén.
4 RBt tartunk majd meg. Todman RFA, szóval ő lehet a beáldozható, ha draftolunk/igazolunk valakit.
Volt egy érdekes megjegyzése arra a kérdésre, hogy az FAben az Ora, a drafton a Dre fókuszálnánk, arra azt válaszolta, ha bent van még egy jó offenszív skill player a 2. körben, aki 1. körös besorolást kapott, akkor elképzelhető, hogy őt draftoljuk inkább. Tehát ilyet(támadó skill playert) nem akarunk vinni az 1. körben 1/3on? Nem meglepő persze, de én ezt szűrtem le ebből a válaszból.
Volt Alkesszel kapcsolatban is kérdés, azt mondta Cladwell, másodkézből úgy értesült, hogy csak jó hírek jönnek róla, és ha a liga úgy dönt, hogy visszaengedi a jags tárt karokkal várja. De az a lényeg most, hogy az élete kerüljön egyenesbe.
És Idén Caldwell sokkal nyitottabb a letradere, mint az elmúlt 2 évben!

This week at the Scouting Combine, Bradley is kicking his draft research into high gear.

During three separate interviews, including a wide-ranging session with the Times-Union Wednesday night at his downtown hotel, Bradley addressed five issues:

LINDER STAYING PUT

What’s the story: The Jaguars want to create competition at right tackle, a position of need. But Bradley nixed one of the options — moving second-year right guard Brandon Linder outside to tackle. Linder, whom the Jaguars traded up to draft late in last year’s third round when the guard market was dwindling, started 15 games (he missed one game with a shoulder injury). In the Times-Union’s game charting, Linder allowed 41/2 sacks in the first six games, but none in his last nine. By keeping Linder at guard, there is no need to risk stunting his development by making him change positions. even though he started two college games at left tackle.

What Bradley said: “Right now, we like him at right guard. It would be interesting to see [if he was the Jaguars’ best lineman last year], now that we have [offensive line coach] Doug [Marrone] here, to get another view on that. [The coaches] were pretty impressed with him last year. As far as the best, he played the most consistent, probably.”

STILL THE MIDDLE MAN

What’s the story: Fans who want middle linebacker Paul Posluszny on the next bus out of town, or think he should be limited to base defense snaps and come off the field in nickel situations, forget it. Bradley envisions Posluszny as a three-down linebacker. It’s somewhat unexpected because Posluszny was limited to seven games before tearing his pectoral (chest) muscle and needing surgery. In those seven games, he missed 18 snaps because of various bumps and bruises. Posluszny admitted he started slow before picking it up at the time of his injury.

What Bradley said: “I don’t [see him as a two-down player]. He did such a good job for us. We’ll continue to evaluate and go through it all, but I don’t anticipate him being just a two-down player.”

GETTING CREATIVE

What’s the story: One of owner Shad Khan’s more interesting football comments during an interview last month at the Super Bowl was his requirement for additional offensive “creativity.” He cited the Jaguars’ third-and-1 troubles. In reality, the Jaguars went 17 for 23 (73.9 percent) in that situation last year, including streaks of six and seven consecutive conversions. Jaguars quarterbacks were 5-of-6 passing for 32 yards on those plays. But the longest gain of the 23 snaps was 13 yards. Maybe that’s what he’s referring to, that he wants more big plays on third-and-1.

What Bradley said: “More flexible. Creative? We want to be an offense that’s bold and may take a shot on third-and-1 and is an offense that creates issues for a defense.”

WHAT ABOUT DENARD?

What’s the story: It would be stunning if the Jaguars don’t address running back during the offseason, but the door isn’t closed on Denard Robinson being a key part of the offense. He finished last year with a team-high 582 yards rushing (on 135 attempts, a 4.3-yard average) despite rushing for only 94 yards in the first six games and then missing the last three games with a foot injury. There is a place on this team for Robinson. Could it possibly be as a first- and second-down option early in the season while a drafted running back gets up to speed?

What Bradley said: “Denard was a pleasant surprise for us [last year]. He came back from his rookie year stronger and bigger and really shocked us. We’re really pleased with his progress and we’re hopeful that he takes the next step. But if there are players out there available in free agency or the draft, we’re going to take a look at them. We would strongly consider that.”

THE BORTLES PLAN

What’s the story: The Jaguars are prohibited from giving quarterback Blake Bortles any information about offensive coordinator Greg Olson’s new system until early April. But Bortles has talked to several players who were with Olson in Oakland and talked to Olson on the phone when he was hired. Bradley has told Bortles to use this time to focus on the physical part of the game. The view here is the consternation over Bortles’ fundamentals are overblown. He’s a big guy who lumbers when scrambling, who occasionally holds the football too long (which sometimes pays off) and will take chances. The key individual stat about Bortles — he averaged an interception once every 17.3 attempts in his first six games (12 in 208 attempts) and one every 53.4 attempts in his last eight games (5 in 267 attempts). He’ll be better and the Jaguars know it.

What Bradley said: “I think he can tighten things up. And it’s not a lot of things. That’s what he’s attacking now. He’s not getting any information football-wise from us so all of his attention is focusing on those areas and improving. He made some in-season adjustments to help himself out, but now he understands more what he needs to do.”

1. Saying Posluszny is still a three-down LB -- surprised me a little considering he is coming off injury and started slow last year.
2. The Otto discussion is living in the gray area. Narrowing it down, Gus wants a LB who can, in order, a) cover, b) play run and c) rush.
3. Gus mentioned how he wanted CBs to challenge WRs all the time. Asked if him Colvin was already there? "yes, yes," he said.
4. Gus on cap space: "You’ll still see us make good, wise, decisions that will help us as a team instead of going crazy on one area."
5. Gus on offense: "More flexible. We want to be an offense that’s bold and make takes a shot on third-and-1."

Úgy tűnik Julius Thomas tesztelni fogja a piacot. Elutasított egy évi 8 millás szerződést a nyáron, szóval a pénzre (is) megy. Leonard Williams sanszosan sajnos a Titansben fog kikötni, hacsak nem tradel fel valaki a Titans helyére Mariotáért. Szóval kvázi úgy tekintek rá, hogy ő már nem lesz bent.
Marks reméljük, hogy felépül szezonkezdetre, de még minden képlékeny vele kapcsolatban. január elején műtötték. Mivel Roy Miller is műtét után lábadozik, az Abry Jones- Ziggy Hood párosra nagy szerep várhat a szezon elején. Ezért (is) lenne jó, hogy ha Williams még bent lenne 1/3on. Ha nem, és velünk nem tradel senki(Jets, vagy a Phily), akkor ebből pass rusher lesz (Gregory vagy Fowler).iktriad
