Win against Kansas State, but...

Quarterback
When Quinn Ewers went down against the Houston Cougars, Maalik Murphy wasn’t asked to do much, so the last two weeks have been his baptism into the world of starting quarterbacks.

A week ago, Murphy started the game poorly and finished strong. Against Kansas State, Texas led by three scores after a strong start but let KSU claw its way back in and make it closer than it needed to be. Murphy completed seven of his first nine attempts for 152 yards and a score, then, following an interception, the wheels fell off and he closed 12-of-28 passing for 96 yards.

It seems like Ewers will be out for a few more weeks, so it then becomes a Sarkisian and AJ Milwee problem to solve during the week. If the Longhorns want to achieve their goal, the coaches need to find a way to win at the quarterback position.

Coverage
"The Texas defense shut down the Kansas State ground game, so the Wildcats turned to what several others have found against the Longhorns — intermediate passing.

Kansas State quarterback Will Howard capitalized on the soft coverage schemes, with 14 of his 26 completions coming between 5-and-14 yards for 175 yards. Once again, in a repeat of what Houston managed to do, Kansas State, not known for its passing prowess, found space in the zone and kept their offense moving and on schedule.

Schematically, Texas seemingly chose to play a softer game following the big lead, creating a perfect storm of defensive letdown and offensive struggle to keep KSU in this game. Ultimately, it landed on the defense to win the game and they answered the call, but it was a lot closer than it should have been."

Meltdown
"The Longhorns had an opportunity to put Kansas State away permanently, leading 27-7 with four minutes left in the third quarter.

The Wildcats responded with three unanswered touchdowns to tie the game in the fourth quarter and put all the pressure on Texas. That’s a flip from what should have been an “warm up the bus” start of the game for the Longhorns, but they couldn't close. Then, after the unlikely Kansas State field-goal miss to maintain the three point lead, Texas needed one first down to end the game.

They went three-and-out and gave up the game-tying field goal.

After being able to run the ball when they wanted to earlier in the season, Texas needed to run three times for a first down to end the game in regulation, but they could not. The Longhorns were lucky to escape with a win, but added fireworks where none were needed."

az első szériában igencsak visszafogott volt, s hibázott is (int, fumble), ám később megszaladt a szekér. ez azért betudható a playhívásnak is, hogy felvegye a ritmust.

ennél nagyobb gond, hogy red zone offense nem létezik, s a playívás is egyre pocsékabb. a BYU-i védelem a liga alsóbbik részébe tartozik, mégis rendre megakadtunk, s volt, hogy a negyedik kísérlet sem jött össze KÉTSZER - nem tudom hanyadjára látjuk ezt idén.

ellenben itt jon a kasnas state, a tavalyi big12 bajnok, akik az utolsó két mérközésen 3 pontot engedett az ellenfélnek, mikozben ők feltettek a táblára 82 pontot (ha három mérkőzést nézünk, akkor 3 W széria 120 ponttal).

talán most sarkisian ismételten észbe kaphat (mint az oklahoma, alabama ellen), hogy langyos játékkal és playhívással nem sokra megyünk, aludt tejként nem lesz big12 döntő.

A matchup to watch on Saturday will the performance of each team in the red zone. Currently, Oklahoma has scored 11 red-zone rushing touchdowns and eight red-zone passing touchdowns on 27 attempts (70.4 percent).

The Texas defense has yet to give up a red-zone rushing touchdown and has given up a single passing touchdown on 10 total red-zone attempts (10.0) percent. The ability to convert red-zone opportunities into touchdowns will be a huge matchup on Saturday.

When looking more broadly about red scoring, Texas ranks No. 2 in the country on overall red-zone defense as they have held teams completely scoreless in 50.0 percent of all attempts this year. The role that scoring seven versus three or even zero cannot be understated in the overall outcome of the game.

On the flip side, the Texas offense has been somewhat mediocre at getting into the end zone. Texas has scored a touchdown on 11-of-21 red-zone attempts (52.4 percent). Texas has successfully kicked a field goal on 8-of-21 red-zone possessions (38.1 percent).

This number hasn’t posed a problem thus far this season but allows teams to stick around both on the scoreboard and mentally. The score remains close and the defense can feel as if they won the drive by holding the offense out of the end zone.

The Oklahoma red-zone defense has also impressed thus far. They have only allowed opponents into the red zone eight times this year and have given up no rushing touchdowns and just three passing touchdowns for a touchdown rate of 37.5 percent. If Oklahoma can force Texas to kick field goals, the outcome could end in their favor. In a game where every point counts, the red-zone efficiency of both teams will be a pivotal aspect to watch on Saturday.

-- Oklahoma passing offense vs. the Texas pass defense --

Oklahoma’s prolific passing attack, led by their talented wide receivers and quarterback, has been a force to be reckoned with this season. Currently ranking second in completion percentage, third in scoring offense, and seventh in passing yards per game in the nation, the Sooners have shown the ability to shred opposing defenses.

However, it’s important to note that they haven’t faced a defense of Texas’ caliber yet. The Longhorns pass defense has been formidable with six interceptions on the season and a reputation for shutting down passing lanes thanks to an experienced secondary that starts four seniors.

Their ability to disrupt the rhythm of the Oklahoma passing game will be critical in this matchup.

If Texas can create turnovers or limit the big plays, they will significantly improve their chances of victory — the winner of the turnover battle in the Red River Rivalry is 14-7 since 2000. On the flip side, if Oklahoma can exploit the occasional vulnerabilities in the Texas secondary, as evidenced by long passing touchdowns allowed against Alabama and Kansas, it could put immense pressure on the Texas offense.

A potent passing game can not only rack up points but also control the tempo of the game, keeping the opposing offense off the field. Furthermore, if Oklahoma is able to routinely rely on their wide receivers to get open against the Texas secondary, the strengths of the Longhorns defense will be hindered. Keep a close eye on the timing and separation of Oklahoma wide outs on Saturday.

Third down is a critical feature of any game. For the second straight week, the Texas defense will be facing a highly successful third-down offense in the Kansas. After holding the previous No. 1 team in third-down conversion to an 0-for-8 performance, the Horns will face the sixth-best team in the country in the Cotton Bowl.

This year, Oklahoma has converted over half their third downs as they currently have gone 37-for-67 (55.2 percent). The Texas defense is ranked nine in the country in third-down stops and has held opponents to a 26.9-percent conversion rate.

Once again, something will have to give and whichever direction it leans could sway the outcome of the game. If Texas is able to stop Oklahoma short of the chains, the momentum of the game will favor Texas.

-- Oklahoma fourth-down offense vs. Texas fourth-down defense --

While third down will be huge in this game, fourth-down plays represent an extension of that matchup and thus a potentially pivotal one on Saturday. Both third and fourth downs are an opportunity for the defense to cement drives as being unsuccessful for the offense. If Texas is able to hold Oklahoma on third down, expect the offense to remain on the field for the Sooners, especially in short-yardage situations.

Oklahoma is currently tied for sixth in the country in fourth-down conversion rate at an impressive 87.5 percent — with opponents only stopping them once in eight fourth-down attempts. Coming into the game, the Sooners coaching staff will likely be quite confident in this aspect of the game and try to use it to their advantage.

On the flip side, Texas has consistently improved on fourth down throughout the season. Texas is tied for 27th in the country and has held opponents to only four conversions on 11 attempts (36.4 percent). This unit is also likely confident in their fourth-down ability because in the last two games, the defense has allowed one conversion in seven attempts (14.3 percent). In addition, several of those stops have occurred in critical places on the field or in relation to the game like the fourth-down stop against Kansas that led to Texas offense scoring the final 21 points of the game and the defense producing two three and outs and another fourth-down stop.

While these plays may be few in comparison to other key matchups, their outcome remains equally as impactful on the overall result.

1. Jalon Daniels vs. the Texas QB spies

Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels is the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. In just three games this season, Daniels has shown why — the true dual-threat quarterback has completed 74.7 percent of his passes for 705 yards and five touchdowns against just one interception. He’s also averaging 9.0 yards per carry on the ground in 27 attempts (+ 74 rushing yard).

Daniels leads a potent Kansas offense, so one of the most interesting matchups in this game will be the ability of the Texas defense to contain Daniels on scrambles — the Jayhawks quarterback is dangerous on off-schedule plays when exiting the pocket to pass or run.

Against Alabama, Texas opted to utilize freshman linebacker Anthony Hill Jr. to spy on Jalen Milroe in order to limit his ability to scramble. Look for defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski to deploy Hill Jr often on Saturday in a similar role.

The athleticism of each of these players is off the charts — Daniels and Hill both present uniquely powerful builds with excellent speed and quickness.

For Hill to win this match up, he’ll need to rely on efficient angles, solid tackling techniques, and confident decision making. If he can successfully contain Daniels, the Longhorns defense will be limiting a huge threat of the Jayhawks offense.

2. Kansas ground game vs. the Texas front seven

While limiting the scrambling ability of Daniels is key, the running game for Kansas does not solely rely on creative plays from the agile quarterback — the Jayhawks offense also relies on designed quarterback runs from Daniels and possesses a two-headed running back threat of Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw.

Currently, the Jayhawks average 217.8 rushing yards per game and 5.5 yards per carry. Neal comes in averaging just below 100 yards per game on 6.9 yards per carry while Hishaw is slightly above seven yards per carry but sees less volume. This duo has combined for eight touchdowns through four games and sets the tone for the Kansas offense.

Kansas will rely on the ground game heavily both to advance the ball and set up the pass game — it’s key to their entire offensive gameplan. If Texas can stop the ground game and force Kansas to be one dimensional, the Longhorns can gain a significant advantage.

Texas will rely on the front seven to stem the Kansas rushing attack with opponents averaging just 2.7 yards per carry and given up a lone touchdown on the ground.

The onus to stop the Kansas ground game will be equally distributed among the front seven, but look for interior defensive lineman for Texas to play a critical role in this battle. If the Longhorns can repeatedly get a push up front like they did against the Bears in allowing 60 rushing yards on 31 attempts, things will be in their favor.

3. Kansas third-down offense vs. the Texas third-down defense

Kansas comes into Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium leading the country in third-down conversions as the only team to convert at a rate higher than 60 percent. After converting 49.3 percent of their third downs last year, this team has moved the chains on third down at a 62.5-percent rate.

The Longhorns defense has currently held opponents to a 30.5-percent conversion rate, good for 18th in the country thanks to an ability to create third and longs and then get pressure on opposing quarterbacks. The battle on third down has the potential to decide the outcome of the game.

4. Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell vs. the Kansas Secondary

On the other side of the ball, the matchup between the Texas wide receivers and the Kansas secondary has large implications. Against Alabama, Xavier Worthy and AD Mitchell both reeled in long touchdown passes that altered the games final outcome.

If these two vertical threats can get past the Kansas secondary, look for the Texas offense to move the ball effectively in other areas as well. While the big plays are momentum-swinging moments, if Texas can establish a vertical threat early, the Kansas secondary will be forced to adapt and leave holes for the run game or the intermediate passing attack.

Texas hasn’t utilized the deep ball as frequently as some may have expected before the season — it is entirely possible that aspect of the aerial attack has remained underutilized in order to bring it out for this game.

Worthy and Mitchell will undoubtedly have one-on-one matchups down the field against Kansas. If Texas can connect on shot plays early and often, the Longhorn offense will be able to put up points at a rate that could swing the final outcome in their favor.

5. Quinn Ewers vs. an INT-forcing secondary

Beyond just the deep threat look for turnovers, particularly interceptions, to be a key matchup in this game. Kansas has intercepted six passes through four games while Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers hasn’t thrown an interception in 228 attempts.

Ewers has demonstrated remarkable poise and decision making, but now faces a secondary that has been able to force opposing quarterbacks into throwing interceptions and is currently playing with a high level of confidence.

If Ewers can continue to protect the ball in the air, it will significantly bolster the odds of a Texas victory. However, if Kansas is able to force poor decision making or even an interception, it could swing the momentum in their favor.
