Le a kalappal Bill Belichick és Paul Brown előtt.

Peter King szokásos hétfői cikkéből:

"In looking into the performance of great coaches in NFL history and losing streaks this week, I have even more respect for Paul Brown than ever. That's difficult for me to fathom, because I already considered him the best pro football coach ever.

I set out to look into how Bill Belichick's teams performed after a loss, which, since 2003, has been fairly remarkable. After the bad loss at Cleveland last week, I thought it merited a look, particularly since a treacherous road game lay ahead last night at Pittsburgh. So I decided to look at two-game losing streaks by the great coaches of our time. I picked out five: Paul Brown, Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Bill Walsh and Belichick. And I compared their greatest eight-year runs as NFL coaches with Belichick's current eight-year run. How many two-game losing streaks did each one have over their eight-year span.

What I found:

Coach 8-Year Period 2-Game Losing Streaks

Brown 1950-57 1
Lombardi 1960-67 4
Shula 1970-77 5
Walsh 1981-88 6
Belichick 2003-10 2

Belichick had one in 2006 and one in 2009. New England's 39-26 victory over the Steelers on Sunday night staved off number three. That's it. And no three-game losing streaks for Belichick either.

Here's what amazes me about Brown's record. His Cleveland Browns played four dominating seasons in the All-America Football Conference, then joined the NFL in 1950. In his first six years as an NFL coach, Brown never had a two-game losing streak. Roll that around in your brain. Not 'til 1956 did the Browns lose two straight. I find it amazing, especially since Brown's Browns entered the league with a bulls-eye on them, with the NFL wanting to put the upstart kids in their place. The established league never could."

Mennyi az egy szezon alatti legtöbb hosszabbításos meccs?

2005-ig bezárólag a CHFF (Cold Hard Football Facts) egyik cikke segített, onnantól magam számolgattam.

http://www.coldhardfootballfacts.com/Articles/11_572_Working_overtime.html

A válasz: 25. 2002-ben játszottak ilyen rekordszámú hosszabbításos derbit a teljes alapszakasz során.

Ami az egy forduló alatti legtöbb hosszabbításos meccset illeti, itt a rekord az 5.

Idézek a CHFF cikkéből: "Thanksgiving Weekend 2005 made fervent fans thankful for this bonus football. It was just the fourth time in league history that as many as four games on the slate went to an extra frame. The NFL record for most overtime games in a single weekend is five – set in Week 6 (Oct. 8-9) of the 1995 season – and there have been two other instances of four OTs – 1993’s Week 18 (Jan. 2-3, 1994) and 2002’s Week 7 (Oct. 20)."

A cikk táblázata:

Az utóbbi évek adatai

Season OT Games Won by FG Won by TD Tie

2006 11 7 4 0
2007 15 11 4 0
2008 15 12 2 1
2009 13 12 1 0
2010 (10. hétig) 13 11 2 0

És még egy érdekesség, ami valóban hihetetlen és valószínűleg megismételhetetlen, a nyolc évvel ezelőtti 10. játékhétről!

"2002 Week 10 saw an extremely rare trifecta that may never be duplicated. Three games went to overtime with the identical score (17-17), and all three were decided in different ways. A 42-yard field goal by Matt Stover propelled the Ravens past the Jets, 20-17. The Jaguars defeated the Lions, 23-17, on David Garrard’s 36-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Smith. And Tennessee’s Fred Miller, who had recovered a Billy Volek fumble in the end zone, was tackled for a safety by Chicago’s Adewale Ogunleye, giving the Bears a 19-17 victory over the Titans."

Elias says:

"Santonio Holmes caught a 37-yard touchdown pass from Mark Sanchez with 16 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Jets a 26-20 victory over the Browns. It was the longest overtime TD pass inside the 2-minute warning in NFL history."

"Chad Pennington made his first start since September 2009, but it was Chad Henne and Tyler Thigpen who threw touchdown passes in the Dolphins' 29-17 victory over the Titans. It was the first time since 1973 that two quarterbacks who didn't start threw TD passes in one game for the same team. The last QBs to do so were John Brodie and Joe Reed of the 49ers in a 40-0 win over the Saints. Brodie relieved the Niners' starter, Steve Spurrier, in the second quarter after Spurrier threw a pair of interceptions."

"Bryan McCann became the third player in modern NFL history (that is, since 1933) to score a TD of at least 100 yards with the first interception of his career. But he wasn't the first Cowboys player to do so. That would be Mike Gaechter, who, like McCann, returned his first INT for a 100-yard TD; Gaechter did it against the Eagles in 1962. The other player to go the length of the field for a touchdown with his first NFL interception was Chris Carr of the Raiders in 2006."

"Troy Smith passed for 356 yards and a touchdown in the 49ers' 23-20 overtime victory over the Rams. Only three other Heisman Award winners ever passed for 350 or more yards without an interception in an NFL game: Vinny Testaverde (3 times), Carson Palmer (3 times) and Doug Flutie (once)."

"Sam Bradford extended his streak of passes without an interception to 138 in the Rams' loss at San Francisco. Over the last 20 years, only one other rookie had an INT-less streak that long: Bruce Gradkowski of the Bucs in 2006 (147)."

"Kyle Orton threw four touchdown passes, including three in the first quarter, to lead the Broncos to a 49-29 win over the Chiefs. This is hard to believe, but the last four players to throw three TD passes in the first quarter were Billy Volek, A.J. Feeley, J.P. Losman, and Brady Quinn - all of them for teams that ultimately lost the game. (The previous 18 players with three or more first-period TD passes were all winners.)"

"When Dave Rayner kicked a 25-yard field goal in the second quarter of Sunday's loss at Buffalo, he became the first Lions player other than Jason Hanson to score a three-pointer since Eddie Murray kicked the last of his 244 field goals for Detroit on December 22, 1991 (also at Buffalo)."

"Cadillac Williams sealed the Bucs' 31-16 win over the Panthers with a 45-yard touchdown run with less than 3 minutes to play. It was Williams' longest gain on either a run or a pass reception since he scored from 71 yards out in his NFL debut (Sept. 11, 2005 at Minnesota)."

When the San Francisco 49ers named Troy Smith the starting QB for this Sunday’s game, a matchup of two former Heisman Trophy winning QB’s was setup. On Sunday Sam Bradford of the Rams (2008 Trophy winner) and Troy Smith of the 49ers (2006 Trophy winner) will face off against each other, and it will be the first time since 2004 that two former Heisman Trophy winning QB’s start against each other in an NFL game. "Jason Garrett’s head coaching debut as an interim head coach with the Dallas Cowboys was an incredible success. Not only did the Cowboys pick up a double-digit victory (33-20), but they beat the New York Giants, one of the best teams in their conference, and on the road none the less.

Jason Garrett is one out of seven interim head coaches since 1950, to pick up a victory on the road in their interim debut. The Cowboys victory by 13 points was also the greatest margin of victory by a debuting interim head coach on the road (from a period of 1950-). The previous best margin of victory on the road by a debuting interim head coach was Wayne Fontes in 1988, when the Detroit Lions beat the Green Bay Packers 19-9."

Még a múlt hétvégi fordulóhoz kapcsolódó érdekesség, amire Pete Fierle a Pro Football Hall of Fame munkatársa figyelt fel.

"Yesterday, for the first time since 1979, two position players attempted kicks on the same day. The New England Patriots Wes Welker and the Detroit Lions Ndamukong Suh were called into action after injuries sidelined their kickers. Suh’s extra point attempt in relief of Jason Hanson, missed when he hit the upright. Meanwhile in Cleveland, Welker connected on a PAT when he had to relieve the injured Stephen Gostowski. Unlike Suh, Welker had prior practice as he had kicked an extra point and field goal when he was with the Miami Dolphins. Welker converted the PAT in yesterday’s game.

Since I have the most comprehensive library of NFL football just about 20 feet from my office, I thought I’d go back to 1979 and see exactly what the deal was when this unusual occurrence happened the last time.

It was the San Diego Chargers backup quarterback Cliff Olander (below left) and New Orleans Saints running back Tony Galbreath (below right) who attempted kicks in Week 2 of the ’79 season. Galbreath was the busier of the two as he replaced kicker Russell Erxleben who suffered a pulled hamstring. Tony nailed a pair of field goals (23 and 27 yards) and an extra point. But, he also had a missed PAT and missed field goal as the Saints fell to the Green Bay Packers, 28-19, on Sept. 9, 1979.
Olander, who the Chargers drafted as a punter, kicked an extra point in place of Rolf Benirschke in the Chargers 30-10 win over the Oakland Raiders. His conversion came following San Diego’s final score of the day, a 5-yard Dan Fouts to Kellen Winslow touchdown pass."

"The Falcons squandered a 20-7 fourth-quarter lead, but Matt Ryan's touchdown pass to Roddy White with 20 seconds remaining gave Atlanta a 26-21 win over the Ravens. It was the first time in Falcons history that they relinquished a lead of 13 or more points in the fourth quarter and then came from behind to win in regulation."

"Roddy White caught 12 passes in the Falcons' win on Thursday night. It was White's third game with 10 or more receptions this season and the sixth such game of his NFL career, which has been spent entirely with Atlanta. The only other player in Falcons history with as many 10-catch games as White is Andre Rison, who had seven."

Chase Stuart 5thdown-os írásából. http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/09/as-his-receivers-fall-philip-rivers-stands-alone/#more-59635

"[Seyi] Ajirotutu’s performance against Houston made him the fifth Charger with over 100 receiving yards in a game. Before this season, only three teams have had six players gain at least 100 yards in a game in the same season.

In 1984, Kellen Winslow, Wes Chandler, Charlie Joiner, Bobby Duckworth, Pete Holohan and Eric Sievers hit the century mark for Dan Fouts and the Chargers.

Four years later, Dan Marino helped Mark Clayton, Mark Duper, Jim Jensen, Ferrell Edmunds, Fred Banks and Scott Schwedes each gain 100 receiving yards in at least one game.

And in 2003, Tony Gonzalez, Eddie Kennison, Johnnie Morton, Dante Hall, Priest Holmes and Derrick Blaylock had 100-yard games for Trent Green and Kansas City. In fact, only 20 other teams have had five receivers top 100 yards in a season before this year. With Naanee, Crayton, Gates, Floyd and Ajirotutu already at five, Rivers is one big Vincent Jackson game away from tying the N.F.L. record."

"Jacoby Ford was all over the field on Sunday against Kansas City, catching six passes for 148 yards and returning four kickoffs for 158 yards, including one touchdown. Ford became the first player with 300 all-purpose yards in a game since Week 15 of last season, when Josh Cribbs also carved up the Chiefs. Ford is the first rookie to crack the 300-yard mark in a game since Adrian Peterson in 2007. Ford also became the first player since the merger with 140 receiving yards and 140 kick return yards in the same game."

"Brett Favre set a personal record by throwing for 446 yards against the Cardinals this weekend. He also became the oldest player to throw for 400 yards in a game, breaking the mark held by Warren Moon. But believe it or not, Favre doesn’t hold the single-game passing record for either the Vikings or the Packers."

Érdekes statok a Bengals-Steelers MNF kapcsán.

"Antwaan Randle El, who threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Mike Wallace on Monday, has now completed 21 of 26 regular-season passes (81 percent) for 320 yards and five touchdowns without an interception, which translates to a 157.5 passer rating, just shy of the maximum (158.3). Randle El has the highest completion percentage and higher passer rating among players with at least 20 passes in NFL history. And that doesn't include Randle El's most famous pass, the touchdown to Hines Ward in Super Bowl XL."

"Mike Tomlin is now 6th coach to win 1st 6 games on Monday Night Football, joining Cowher,Flores,Mariucci,Seifert,Shula."

"Roethlisberger now 63-27 (.700) as starter, tying Jim McMahon for 3rd-best record for QB thru 1st 90 starts, trailing Brady & Stabler."

TO-ról külön fejezet szólhatna.

"Bengals receiver Terrell Owens caught his 150th touchdown in the first half, and then added No. 151 in the fourth quarter."

"Terrell Owens now has 51 career 100-yard rec games, passing Don Maynard for 4th most in NFL history (Rice, Moss, Harrison)."

"Terrell Owens has 41 catches for 618 yards and seven touchdowns over his last five games, all of which have been Bengals losses. Seven other players in NFL history have had at least 40 catches for 600 yards and seven touchdowns in a five-game span, but only Owens has done so while playing for the losing team in each game."

- With his 15 rushing attempts on Sunday, LaDainian Tomlinson became just the eighth player in NFL history to surpass 3,000 for his career.

- Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald had 107 yards receiving on Sunday to become the second-youngest player to reach 7,500 in a career behind Randy Moss.

- The Saints' Jeremy Shockey had one catch for a 7-yard touchdown on Sunday for the 500th reception of his career. He's just the eighth TE to reach that mark.

A 9. játékhét legérdekesebb statjai az Eliastól. http://espn.go.com/espn/elias

- Brett Favre set a career high with 446 passing yards in the Vikings' 27-24 overtime win over the Cardinals. Seventy-three different players have passed for at least 400 yards in an NFL victory, including Don Horn (1969 Packers), Tim Rattay (2004 49ers), and Matthew Stafford as a rookie last season for the Lions. But until Sunday, Brett Favre had never done so. His only previous 400-yard performance came in a loss to the Bears in 1993 (402 yards).

- The Vikings overcame a 24-10 deficit in the final 4 minutes of the fourth quarter and then scored in overtime for a 27-24 victory over the Cardinals. It was the first time in team history that Minnesota won a game after trailing by 14 or more points with less than 4 minutes to play. In fact, no NFL team had done so since the Colts rallied late for a 38-35 overtime win at Tampa in 2003.

- The Jets erased a 10-point deficit in the final 3 minutes of the fourth quarter in their 23-20 overtime victory at Detroit. The Jets had only one other win in team history in which they overcame a double-digit deficit inside the 3-minute mark. That was a 21-17 victory at Tampa in 2000, with Wayne Chrebet scoring the game-winning TD on a pass from Curtis Martin.

- The Browns, with a 2-5 record coming into the game, posted a 34-14 victory over the Patriots. It was only the second time that a team with a record at least three games below .500 defeated New England with Tom Brady starting. Prior to Sunday's loss, the Patriots had a 25-1 record with Brady starting against teams that were minus-3 or worse. The loss was by one point at Miami in December 2004 (29-28).

The last time the Patriots lost by 20 or more points to a team at least three games below .500 was 1992, when they were shut out, 34-0, by the Falcons at Atlanta. Bill Belichick was coaching the Browns at that time. (In fact, on that day, Belichick's Browns defeated Mike Ditka's Bears, 27-14.)

- The Patriots were the only NFL team to start the weekend with only one loss. Cleveland's victory over New England makes this the first season since 1959 in which every NFL team lost at least two of its first eight games. (There were only 12 NFL teams when this last happened.)

- The Giants scored early and often in a 41-7 victory at Seattle. New York led 21-0 after the first quarter, marking the first time in team history that the Giants scored as many as 21 points in the opening period of a road game. By halftime, they had extended the lead to 35-0, the largest halftime lead on the road in franchise history. In fact, the only other game in which the Giants led by 35 or more points at the half was a 45-14 win over the Redskins at Yankee Stadium in 1959 (38-0 at halftime).

- It's all coming together in the Bay Area. The Giants won the World Series, and the Earthquakes advanced to the Eastern Conference final in Major League Soccer. (Yes, you read that right-Eastern Conference.) The Warriors are undefeated in their first four home games of the new season. And on Sunday, the Raiders overcame a 10-0 halftime deficit to post a 23-20 overtime victory over the Chiefs for their third straight win. That's Oakland's first three-game winning streak since 2002. Every other NFL team already had at least one three-game winning streak during that period.

- The Ravens neither punted nor turned the ball over in their 26-10 win over the Dolphins. Over the last 10 seasons, only two other teams played a game with no punts or giveaways: the Browns against the Giants in 2008 and the Jets against the Seahawks in 2004.

- The Packers scored 28 points in the second quarter of their win over the Cowboys. That tied the most points ever allowed by Dallas in a quarter. The Eagles scored 28 in the second quarter on November 15, 2004.
