Notes and observations from #49ers practice No. 12 (against the Denver Broncos):

WARNING: This is very long. Like, longer than usual.

- As expected, DE Nick Bosa was back after missing the past three practices with some soreness. He was back at full strength too. Had him down for at least three sacks in team drills and might have had more.

- FB Kyle Juszczyk also returned after missing a little bit with a heel injury. He didn't seem to be slowed much.

- The biggest concern of the day came from an injury to DE Mykel Williams midway through practice. Williams was engaged with OT Mike McGlinchey and then went down grabbing at his left leg. Bosa and LB Fred Warner went over to check on him and McGlinchey checked on him as well before he limped to the locker room. The good news, at least preliminarily: Williams only has a hyperextended knee. Kyle Shanahan said that's the early indication which would mean Williams misses about a week. it will keep him out of the preseason opener but it sure beats some of the other, more serious alternatives. Of course, Williams is continuing testing even as I type this.

- Players not participating Tuesday because of injury: CB Renardo Green (hamstring), WR Jauan Jennings (calf), WR Jacob Cowing (hamstring), S Ji'Ayir Brown (ankle), RB Isaac Guerendo (shoulder), DT Evan Anderson (knee bruise), DT Kevin Givens (pectoral) and DE Sam Okuayinonu (groin).

- Others I did not see: RB Jordan James (broken finger), CB Fabian Moreau, LB Chazz Surratt, DT Jordan Elliott (back). Shanahan said Elliott should be back next week while James is likely to miss a couple of weeks.

- CB Darrell Luter Jr. and S Marques Sigle both departed at points in practice to be evaluated for concussions. They were cleared.

- A roster move made before practice: The Niners released CB Eli Apple and signed DL Michael Dwumfour. They're light at DL and need bodies to get through this week.

- Shanahan said he doesn’t plan to play many starters Saturday night in the first exhibition game. That’s been the general approach for the Niners under Shanahan. Safe to expect the Niners to rest all of their primary stars.

- Taking in today's practice: Brian Griese, the former Niners QB coach and former Broncos quarterback. Griese left his QB coach job with San Francisco in the offseason with Mick Lombardi replacing him in that role.

- Another fairly warm day and a LONG practice. They went 14 periods with multiple special teams sessions mixed in. They finished with a live (ish) 2-minute drill, something the 49ers generally only do at a controlled pace in their afternoon walk throughs. The Niners' top offense capped their day with a touchdown during this as QB Brock Purdy bought some time and found WR Demarcus Robinson for a touchdown.

- A note: It is not possible to watch what's happening on both fields during this. There were moments where I could see both and I have some notes from those. Otherwise, I focused my eyes on the Niners defense against the Broncos offense. Given the uncertainty on that side of the ball, I figured it was time better spent to see how they fared on defense. Some notes on the SF offense are courtesy of my pal and colleague
@Jeff_Legwold
.

- Also, do not read too much into who is running with the starters, especially on the DL. There are a lot of injuries there so naturally you're seeing more of rookies like C.J. West and Alfred Collins in that top group. West has been doing it all week but without Elliott today, Collins and Kalia Davis took turns next to West.

- Watched the 49ers DL against the Broncos OL in one-on-one pass rush. It started fittingly with McGlinchey against Bosa. McGlinchey did quite well in winning that rep though Bosa gave him (and others) problems in team drills.

- I know he was an All Pro last year but Quinn Meinerz is a pleasure to watch for someone like me who doesn't get to see much Broncos football. An absolute stud, who completely shut down Davis and DT Bruce Hector in one on ones and then was stout again in team drills. Really impressive player.

- Two Niners had, in my opinion, their best 1v1 days of camp: DT Alfred Collins and DE Robert Beal Jr. Collins struggled in his first go at Broncos C Luke Wattenberg but he followed with a nice bull rush into a snatch move on G Calvin Throckmorton for a win and then two more wins, one with quick hands to slap away a blocker (couldn't get a number) and get by and another with a similar move paired with a spin. Beal hasn't really stood out much but he showed some power we haven't seen much of today, even knocking McGlinchey back on a rep and later soundly pushing Broncos OL Xavier Truss into the QB's lap for a win.

- Rookie DT Sebastian Valdez continued to make an impression here, winning with a combination of power, leverage and speed on three of his four reps with the fourth closer to a draw. Definitely someone to watch in preseason games and with the injuries at DT, the door is wide open for him to win a roster spot.

- Mykel Williams continued his trend of faring better rushing from the inside than the edge. He got a win against Broncos G Ben Powers early in the 1v1. Williams got a similar win early in team for a would be sack.

- The 49ers defense against Broncos offense was interesting and sort of back and forth. On one hand, Bosa was a menace and consistently blew up any momentum the Broncos had. On the other, when Bosa might have gotten a pressure but not a sack, Bo Nix made some excellent throws on the run. There were multiple occasions where Nix broke contain and then hit a receiver for a medium to big gain while on the run. Courtland Sutton, Devaughn Vele and Marvin Mims all were beneficiaries of that at certain points. Nix hit Sutton for a toe tap TD in red zone while running to his right for what was the best throw and catch of the day on that side of the field.

- LBs Fred Warner and Dee Winters were all over the place, especially Winters. He had a couple of nice thuds and forced Nix into an incompletion with a well timed blitz that led to Nix letting it go earlier than he wanted to on a throw for Mims.

- While Dallis Flowers had a pass breakup and seemed to hold up OK in coverage, the Niners rotated Luter in while still easy Deommodore Lenoir back from the hip issue that's been bothering him. Nix and the Broncos went at Luter a few times for sizable gains. The Niners still have a lot of questions to work through in the secondary. A fair amount of flags on the Niners defense, too, particularly in the defensive backfield.

- Upton Stout made his usual early impression by firing from his slot position, evading a blocker and stuffing RB J.K Dobbins on the third play of team period. An underrated aspect of Lenoir's game and of K'Waun Williams before him was the ability to fit in the run game and be unafraid to take on bigger, more physical blockers. Stout undoubtedly has the same quality, which Robert Saleh has to love.

- West had a clean win for a sack in team, beating Powers quickly to get to Nix for a would-be bring down.

- Saleh dialed up some blitzes throughout the session with others, such as S Jason Pinnock and CB Derrick Canteen. The Broncos' 2 minute drill with the starters was an absolute slog. Davis had a would-be sack wiped away by a defensive hold, Bosa and Bryce Huff had a would-be sack, Flowers was called for DPI, Jonathan Garvin had a would-be sack, Bosa had a would-be sack and then Winters nearly had an interception. They lagged so far behind the other field that the Niners' 2s on offense were done with their 2-minute drill before the Broncos' 1s on offense were done with theirs.

- Beal had a couple more pressures with the second unit defense against the Broncos second unit offense during the 2-minute drill to close practice. That led to a breakdown in coverage as QB Sam Ehlinger hit wide open RB Jaleel McLaughlin for a touchdown to wrap it up.

- On the other side of the ball, I saw a few nice plays for the Niners as practice wound down. In a red zone drill, Purdy dropped one in the bucket perfectly to WR Ricky Pearsall for a touchdown in the right front corner of the end zone. Rookie DB Jahdae Barron was tight in coverage but it was a perfect throw and catch. Purdy and the Niners followed with another touchdown in the two-minute as he bought some time and hit Demarcus Robinson for the score.

- According to
@Jeff_Legwold
, the Broncos defense gave the Niners offense some fits early in practice. Purdy threw a pair of picks in 7v7. OT Trent Williams didn't play much which led to some pressure from the Broncos, like Nik Bonitto blowing up the first run play of the day. The Niners No. 1 offense didn't move it much until the latter part of practice, an observation with which Purdy agreed.

"I think they came out ready to roll to compete," Purdy said. "You could feel them. They were in the backfield a couple times and had a couple sacks and obviously some TFLs that looked like... It's not like we weren't competing at all. We are and there's things that we need to get better at, that's why we're practicing. But I also do think it was nice to have a long practice like that so that we practice, we get fatigued, think that's going to happen in games. You are not going to have a great first half, but you regroup and then it's like how are you going to finish? And so I thought we had a good second half of the practice and facing some adversity like that as an offense and then bouncing back and having some good periods at the end. So I thought it was really good for us."

- Leggy had QB Mac Jones down for three interceptions on the day, two in 7v7 and one in team. Broncos nickel CB Jaquan McMillian had two of those.

- Former Niner S Talanoa Hufanga had a big thud on RB Ameer Abdullah and later blew up an end around hand off to Pearsall.

- Niners only tested Broncos CB Patrick Surtain twice in man coverage all day. Surtain broke up both passes, including one for Robinson in the end zone in the 2-minute drill to wrap up the day.

--They threw all of two balls at Surtain in man all day – he knocked both away, including in endzone in the final period in the end of game situation.

- Some big gains on catches for Jordan Watkins and Robbie Chosen as well with those coming with non starting groups.

- K Jake Moody attempted seven field goals on the day and made all of them but it's fair to say it was a bit of an adventure. His first attempt from about 33 yards hit the left upright and bounced in. His next one from just beyond that just eked inside the right upright. He steadied himself from there and his 52-yarder to cap the team period was his best struck ball of the day, going right down the middle with plenty of distance.

- Junior Bergen, Jordan Watkins and Ameer Abdullah continue to get most of the looks at punt returner.

- As joint practices go, this was fairly tame without any notable scuffles. I was told there was some more back and forth between the Broncos defense and Niners offense but nothing that materialized. The closest thing to a fight came when Niners special teamer Chase Lucas seemed to get into it a bit with some Broncos special teamers. It didn't get much beyond that though with Warner stepping in to keep the peace once.

- OK, enough of my rambling for today. That'll do it for this one. Back at practice next week. Enjoy your Thursday and your weekend and we'll have notes and observations from preseason opener in real time on Saturday night.

49ers WR Jauan Jennings, who is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season in the final year of his deal, wants a new contract or a trade, per sources.

49ers extended Jennings’ deal last year, but that does not change how Jennings feels about this year.

49ers and Eagles are working to finalize a trade that will send edge rusher Bryce Huff to San Francisco for a mid-round pick. The trade cannot and would not be processed until after June 1. But both sides are working to make it happen, and Huff already has reworked his contract to help facilitate the trade. In San Francisco, Huff will be reunited with 49ers DC Robert Saleh, his former HC with the Jets.
