Here are seven free agent defensive players the Jaguars should pursue, in order of preference:

THE CASE FOR …
DE OLIVIER VERNON

Miami put the transition tag on Vernon at $12.7 million in 2016. The Jaguars should blow that figure away.

The biggest reason for the Jaguars’ 11 losses last season was a defense that couldn’t rush the passer. Coach Gus Bradley was forced to go away from his defensive philosophy and blitz more because his front four was inept.

The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Vernon would greatly help in erasing that problem. Vernon doesn’t turn 26 until Oct. 7, yet already has 29 career sacks, including 251/2 in the last three years.

The Jaguars think they have a special pass rusher in Dante Fowler, but he remains a mystery since he didn’t play his rookie year due to injury.

Vernon, who has never missed a game in four seasons, would provide a proven pass rusher.

The Jaguars should aggressively pursue Vernon, signing him to a deal that the Dolphins would refuse to match. A contract at five years that pays $70 million ($17 million in the first year) with $40 million guaranteed should do the trick.

CB JANORIS JENKINS

The hole at cornerback is obvious after a disappointing season in which Aaron Colvin didn’t progress on the perimeter and Dwayne Gratz and Demetrius McCray regressed.

The Jaguars have a good cornerback in Davon House, but asking him to shadow an opponent’s best receiver each week might be too tall a request. Jenkins (5-10, 198) doesn’t have the size the Jaguars like, but he’s proven he can cover the best in the game.

The 27-year-old Jenkins started 58 games in his four seasons with the Rams, intercepting 10 passes with 48 break-ups and three forced fumbles. He has scored six defensive touchdowns.

Jenkins would give the Jaguars a solid starting cornerback, allowing them more flexibility in how to use House. Colvin would be able to move inside as the nickel where he seems ideally suited to thrive.

The Jaguars should offer Jenkins a five-year deal worth $55 million with $28 million guaranteed.

Hays Carlyon

FS ERIC WEDDLE

Free safety has been a sinkhole for the Jaguars — the position has experienced no stability and minimal impact plays. It’s time for them to prioritize big money on a big position within their defense.

If the Jaguars knew Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey would be a) available with the fifth pick and b) able to play free safety right away, they could wait. But they don’t.

Enter Weddle. He turned 31 in January and has missed only six games in eight years as a starter, three apiece in 2009 and 2015. He has 19 interceptions and is a two-time All-Pro.

But Weddle is a life-long Left Coaster and he’ll need to have a reason to come east in general and to the Jaguars in particular. At this stage of his career, he probably makes more sense for a team like Carolina.

That means the Jaguars should overpay — a four-year, $32 million contract with $18 million guaranteed gets them in the conversation. If in the fold, the Jaguars could stick with their idea of having James Sample move back to his natural strong safety spot and compete with Johnathan Cyprien and gives them more first-round draft flexibility.

DL MALIK JACKSON

Jaguars defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks has sustained knee and triceps injuries in the last two years and in an equal play-time rotation, Jackson would be an ideal signing. But he will cost monster money.

All indications are Jackson will go the highest bidder regardless of location and that gets the Jaguars in the mix.

Jackson, 26, played 967 snaps last year (an impressive number for a defensive lineman). He’s missed only two games in four years as a regular on defense and has 14.5 sacks.

For the Jaguars, Jackson would be a three-technique defensive tackle and could also team with Marks on third down to form a solid interior pass-rushing duo.

The Jaguars have raided Denver the last two years for left guard Zane Beadles and tight end Julius Thomas. Jackson wants to be paid like J.J. Watt but that’s unlikely to materialize. The Jaguars should offer him a six-year, $78 million contract ($45 million guaranteed).

CB SEAN SMITH

Smith probably figured he was going to strike it rich when he hit free agency before the 2014 season. He ended up signing a three-year, $16.5 million deal with Kansas City. Smith is in line for a big payday this time around.

The cornerback market was depleted earlier this week when Carolina and St. Louis put the franchise tag on Josh Norman and Trumaine Johnson, respectively. This development helps Smith.

Smith checks the size box in the Jaguars’ scheme — 6-foot-2 and 215 pounds. He turns 29 in July and has 10 interceptions in 108 games.

Smith is durable — he’s missed only one game because of injury in seven years. He did serve a three-game suspension to start 2015 because of a DUI plea.

The Jaguars should offer Smith a four-year, $45 million contract ($21 million guaranteed). He would be the No. 1 cornerback they covet and would allow them to move Aaron Colvin into the full-time nickel role.

OLB BRUCE IRVIN

One frightening aspect of free agency is how will the player fit in the new scheme? That’s not a concern with Irvin. As a rookie, Irvin played under Jaguars coach Gus Bradley when he was Seattle’s defensive coordinator.

Irvin shouldn’t be a top priority for the Jaguars because other top-flight defensive linemen and defensive backs would make a more immediate difference.

Still, Irvin would be an excellent third defensive addition. The likely role for Irvin (6-3, 260) would be as the strong-side linebacker. The problem is the current starter, Dan Skuta, only played roughly 40 percent of the snaps when healthy because he came off the field in nickel situations.

Would Irvin move to Leo in nickel, kicking Dante Fowler inside or to the strong-side end spot?

Irvin recorded 22 sacks in his four seasons with Seattle. He can certainly help the Jaguars’ lackluster pass rush.

The 28-year-old Irvin will likely command a contract of five years that pays him $50 million with $27 million guaranteed. If the Jaguars land him, expect an Otto/Leo combination role for Irvin.

Hays Carlyon

DE JASON PIERRE-PAUL

If the Jaguars don’t want to be stuck in a potential week-long limbo waiting to see if Miami matches an offer for transition-tagged end Olivier Vernon, they could strike quick and target Pierre-Paul.

Pierre-Paul severely damaged his right hand when a firework exploded in his hand July 4. He returned for the final eight games and showed he can still be disruptive. He recorded 26 tackles with one sack, yet was credited with seven quarterback hits, and also deflected six passes and recovered two fumbles.

Pierre-Paul (6-5, 278) has 43 sacks in his six seasons and just turned 27 Jan. 1.

With an offseason and training camp to continue adjusting to his hand limitations, Pierre-Paul could become a pass-rushing force again. He’d form an athletically-imposing tandem at Leo with Dante Fowler.

If the Jaguars don’t want to wait on Vernon, they could offer Pierre-Paul a five-year contract worth $45 million with $15 million guaranteed.

Megér egy 1/5 picket az a DE pozíció? Nem hiszem. És akkor mit csinálunk Odrickkal? Ő meg Marks rotálja majd egymást 3T DT poszton? A másik 4 ellen nincs kifogásom, bár Tunsil úgysem lesz bent 1/5n, hacsak nem derül ki róla valami vagy nem sérül le addig.

Szerintem akármelyiket tudja jó áron megszerezni a csapat, jól jár, viszont míg Vernont sokkal nyugodtabb szívvel fizeti túl kicsit a csapat, addig Williamsznél szerintem nem nagyon kellene hatalmas garantáltakkal dobálózni.

Mindenesetre -egy korábbi linkre reagálva, ahol Mayock jósolgatott- nálam is a Jax az idény meglepetéscsapata. Szerintem 3 impact védőnyire és az elvárható, meglévő támadó játékosok általi szintlépésnyire vagytok a PO-tól.

Fowlerrel úgy számolok fantasy szempontból, hogy hasznos játékos lesz, főleg passz szituációban, és egy kb 6-7 sackes és ezzel arányban álló prezsörös idény jöhet, ami első évben már kiemelkedőnek számít.

Jönne még mondjuk Jack S-be, vele első évében egy átlagosnál kicsivel jobb safetyként számolva, már upgrade van.

Második körben egy CB, aki legalább hoz egy átlagos/átlagosan jó szintet.

És az X faktor passrusher igazolás, legyen az Irvin, Vernon vagy Williams.

Ezek együtt már négy upgrade, sőt, egy teljes játékelem is nem csak, hogy fejlődne, de konkrétan szinteket lépne (passrush), ami jótékony hatással lenne minden másra, beindítana egy láncreakciót.

Arról nem is beszélve, hogy az O-falat is tovább lehet építgetni/csiszolgatni.
