Döntő special: a 25 legígéretesebb prospect

The College Football Playoff semifinals were outstanding theater. I was ready for the fifth quarter in both games, so let’s hope that drama continues into Monday night’s national title game.

A Georgia-TCU title matchup isn’t what anyone predicted a few months ago, but it should be an interesting game for scouts. Between the programs, more than 15 players should hear their names called in the 2023 NFL Draft, and there are numerous others who will get NFL camp invites.

That said, several of the best players in this game aren’t yet draft-eligible. Georgia is loaded with promising young talent like Brock Bowers, Malaki Starks, Mykel Williams, Javon Bullard and Kamari Lassiter, among others. For these rankings, though, I am only counting down the top draft-eligible prospects in this game. I also didn’t include players who have already been ruled out due to injury, like Georgia pass rusher Nolan Smith.

The top 25 draft-eligible prospects in the national title game:
(Note: An asterisk indicates a draft-eligible underclassman.)

25. Emari Demercado, RB, TCU (5-11, 210)
Had we known before the Fiesta Bowl that running back Kendre Miller would miss most of the game, Michigan likely would have been double-digit favorites. So, credit Emari Demercado for stepping up and becoming the only player this season to rush for 150 yards against Michigan’s defense. The sixth-year senior wasn’t considered a draftable player during the season, but his Fiesta Bowl performance won’t go unnoticed by scouts.

24. Xavier Truss, LG, Georgia (6-7, 320)*
After three years as a backup, Xavier Truss has filled the shoes of Justin Shaffer this season as the Bulldogs’ starting left guard. There have been a few bumps in the road (like several negative reps on the Missouri and Ohio State tapes), but there’s been more good than bad. Assuming he returns to school for his senior season, Truss can make himself into a draftable prospect.

23. Jared Wiley, TE, TCU (6-6, 259)
A high school quarterback, Jared Wiley spent three seasons as a rarely targeted tight end at Texas before transferring to TCU before this season. Although his receiving production (22 catches for 232 yards and four touchdowns in 2022) won’t blow anyone away, Wiley has more targets this season than during his three years in Austin. He’s also yet to register a drop in his career and has improved as a blocker each season.

22. Johnny Hodges, LB, TCU (6-2, 240)*
A Navy transfer, Johnny Hodges has played well in his first season in Fort Worth and introduced himself to scouts as a prospect worthy of the NFL radar. He was all over the field against Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl and should continue to climb with a positive senior season in 2023.

21. Mark Perry, S, TCU (6-0, 211)
There is a “wow” factor missing from Mark Perry’s game — he is solid but unspectacular across the board. But not every player needs to be a star. Perry, who ranks second on TCU in tackles (78), is an adequate athlete and reliable in run support. His coverage, though, has been inconsistent on this year’s tape (two passes defended, five touchdowns allowed).

20. Stetson Bennett, QB, Georgia (5-11, 186)
Barely considered a priority free agent-level prospect before the season, Stetson Bennett has swayed scouts and has a decent chance of being a late-round pick in April. His arm is average by NFL standards, but the ball comes out clean and he anticipates well, delivering before receivers are looking for the pass. A better athlete than he’s given credit for being, Bennett has a good feel for pressure and no one questions his toughness.

19. Tykee Smith, CB/S, Georgia (5-10, 200)*
A two-time All-American at West Virginia, Tykee Smith transferred to Georgia ahead of the 2021 season. However, injuries derailed his promising trajectory and he missed almost all of the 2021 season due to a foot sprain and ACL tear. This year, Smith has been a part-time player, seeing most of his snaps in the nickel. What he decides to do for the 2023 season will be interesting.

18. Robert Beal Jr., Edge, Georgia (6-4, 255)
With the Bulldogs forced to replace numerous key players from last year’s defense, much was expected of Robert Beal Jr. But he’s looked on his 2022 tape to be much what he was in ’21: an adequate role player. Beal is a flexible athlete with long arms (34.5 inches) and strong hands, but he struggles to work off his initial attack and his pass-rush setup remains in the developmental phase.

17. Derius Davis, WR, TCU (5-8, 158)
Derius Davis started hot with five offensive touchdowns and three receptions of 50-plus yards over the first half of 2022. However, he has been quiet: 15 catches for 141 yards and one touchdown in TCU’s last six games. Although undersized, Davis is a track athlete with blazing speed — he’s the former Louisiana high school state champion in the 200 meters (21.74 seconds) and 400 meters (47.76). His return skills are the key to his draft grad. He’s averaging 15.0 yards per punt return for his career and has six return touchdowns (five punts, one kickoff).

16. Nazir Stackhouse, DT, Georgia (6-3, 320)*
Playing next to Jalen Carter, Nazir Stackhouse is easy to overlook because he doesn’t have the same type of upfield quickness to disrupt the backfield. But he is a dependable run stopper, with his ability to stack the point of attack and holds his ground vs. power. Stackhouse, a junior, has played well in his first year as a starter and is a prospect to keep on the radar for the 2024 NFL Draft class.

15. Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson, CB, TCU (5-8, 177)
This year’s Jim Thorpe Award winner, Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson has very feast-or-famine film. While he is small on paper, Hodges-Tomlinson has the mentality of a much bigger player. His athletic twitch and competitive ball skills allow him to fearlessly make plays on the ball. However, he has almost as many penalties (13) this season as passes defended (17), and his lack of length often shows on tape. Hodges-Tomlinson is as a projected mid-to-late round pick, but he is accustomed to surpassing expectations.

14. Dee Winters, LB, TCU (5-11, 228)
Coming off arguably the best game of his career, Dee Winters showed off his speed against Michigan with three tackles for loss and a 29-yard pick six. He, too, is undersized and that will be a non-starter for several teams, but Winters strikes with stopping power and has above-average range. He never shuts down his pursuit.

13. Warren McClendon, RT, Georgia (6-4, 300)*
The usual starting right tackle for the Bulldogs, Warren McClendon has been banged up and missed the Peach Bowl. Georgia is hoping to get him back for this contest. Efficient off the snap, McClendon might not be truly above average in any one area, but he is solid across the board with his quickness and play strength. While McClendon has eligibility remaining, he participated in Georgia’s senior day, suggesting he’ll enter the draft. He projects as a mid-round pick, likely as a guard.

12. Max Duggan, QB, TCU (6-1, 211)
The Horned Frogs’ backup to begin the season, Max Duggan wasn’t a prospect NFL scouts were talking about back in the summer. He has flipped the narrative with his play this season and is now in the mid-round discussion. Duggan’s accuracy and touch as a passer tend to be inconsistent, but he makes a handful of plays each game with his mobility and competitive toughness that make evaluators sit up in their seats. NFL coaches will want to work with him.

11. Sedrick Van Pran, C, Georgia (6-4, 310)*
One of the better centers in the country, Sedrick Van Pran had a tough outing vs. Ohio State, allowing several pressures as a pass blocker and losing angles in the run game. Only a redshirt sophomore, there is no question he could use another year in Athens before making the jump to the NFL, but Van Pran has the power to create movement and win the point of attack.

10. Kenny McIntosh, RB, Georgia (6-0, 207)
My top-ranked senior running back over the summer, Kenny McIntosh has lived up to his talent as the Bulldogs’ featured ball carrier. One of the top receiving backs in this draft class, too, he had five rush attempts and five catches against the Buckeyes for 126 total yards and a touchdown. McIntosh offers an attractive mix of power and acceleration.

9. Steve Avila, LG, TCU (6-4, 339)
A big-bodied blocker, Steve Avila reminds me as a prospect of Lions Pro Bowler Jonah Jackson when he was coming out of Ohio State. After playing primarily at center the last two seasons, Avila moved to left guard as a senior and has played at a high level (zero sacks allowed). His countering footwork must improve, but he is heavy-handed with the knockback power to dominate in a phone booth.

8. Kendre Miller, RB, TCU (6-0, 220)*
Questionable for the title game after injuring his knee against Michigan, Kendre Miller has been a key cog in the Horned Frogs’ offensive success this season. Averaging 6.2 yards per carry, Miller is a tough player to get on the ground with his leg drive, acceleration through contact and nimble footwork. Assuming he’s not dealing with a major injury, Miller has day-two draft grades from several teams.

7. Christopher Smith, S, Georgia (5-10, 188)
Given Christopher Smith’s undersized frame, I wasn’t overly optimistic before I started studying his tape. But Smith is an easy player to like, because of his toughness and playmaking skills. Although he lacks ideal play strength, Smith anticipates well to bait throws and has the range to cover both sidelines as a center field safety. A prediction: With his talent and football character, he will be a favorite of NFL coaches this draft cycle.

6. Dylan Horton, Edge, TCU (6-4, 275)
The top prospect on the Horned Frogs’ defense, Dylan Horton lived in the backfield against Michigan (4.0 sacks). A former safety, he added 10 to 15 pounds for his senior season without sacrificing his athleticism. In a deep class of edge prospects, it can be easy to overlook Horton, but he projects as a future starter and top-100 pick.

5. Kelee Ringo, CB, Georgia (6-2, 210)*
With his freaky size and speed, Kelee Ringo might be higher on this list for others. However, he hasn’t shown the promising development in coverage this season that many evaluators were expecting. That was on full display in the Peach Bowl as Ohio State wasn’t afraid to throw in his direction (13 targets), especially when he was tasked with covering Marvin Harrison Jr.
Ringo has first-round physical traits, but his inconsistent cover awareness might drop him out of the top 25 picks.

4. Darnell Washington, TE, Georgia (6-7, 280)*
One of the more unique prospects in this draft class, Darnell Washington has the size and blocking skills of an offensive tackle but moves with the prowess of a pass-catching tight end. The No. 22 overall prospect on my November top 50 board, Washington missed most of the Peach Bowl after he exited with a soft tissue contusion in his lower leg, putting his status for the national championship game in question.

3. Quentin Johnston, WR, TCU (6-4, 215)*
If you saw Quentin Johnson stretch out his stride and destroy pursuit angles on his 76-yard catch-and-run vs. Michigan, there should be no mystery as to why he is highly thought of among evaluators. He isn’t a seasoned route runner and has more focus drops than you’d like to see (which is why he isn’t a lock for the top 20 picks), but he has the potential of an NFL playmaker with his size/speed tools, tracking ability and elusiveness after the catch.

2. Broderick Jones, LT, Georgia (6-4, 315)*
Although not the most polished blocker, Broderick Jones will be highly ranked by NFL teams willing to bet on his athletic traits. He must become more consistent to combat power and keep rushers from reaching his chest, but his movement skills are why some NFL evaluators believe Jones will be the first offensive tackle drafted in April.

1. Jalen Carter, DT, Georgia (6-3, 310)*
Arguably the No. 1 player in the 2023 NFL Draft class, Jalen Carter clearly looked fatigued during the Peach Bowl, but he was asked to play a career high in snaps. It was the first time in his career he surpassed 50 defensive snaps. Despite the exhaustion, Carter had several impact plays vs. the run and the pass against Ohio State. With his body control and natural power, his block deconstruction is special.
