When the Jaguars’ veterans report to training camp July 30 and begin practicing the next morning (9:55 a.m.), we know defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks will be brought along slowly after tearing his ACL last Dec. 28 at Houston.

A plan will also be in place for second-year receiver Marqise Lee.

Lee missed the entire OTA/mini-camp schedule because of a knee injury sustained during a Phase 2 workout.

Jaguars receivers coach Jerry Sullivan gave an update on Lee’s status earlier today.

“My understanding is that he’ll be ready to go [next week],” Sullivan said. “But we have to manage him a little bit to make sure he’s OK in term so his health.”

To me, that means Lee will be given the occasional day off from practice or have his snaps curtailed early in camp so he won’t be over-taxed.

Lee missed three games in last year’s first half because of a hamstring injury. Earlier this off-season, coaches say Lee had some good days of work before going down again.

When camp starts, Sullivan said of Lee: “He’s missed some time and has some ground to make up. But he’s in a good frame of mind.”

Jaguars' goal for defensive backs: More interceptions

Among the few things Jaguars cornerback Dwayne Gratz did well during a trying 2014 season came in the finale at Houston.
DeAndre Hopkins was open on a shallow crossing pattern, but Case Keenum threw behind him. Hopkins deflected the errant pass into the air. Gratz intercepted it and scored a 55-yard touchdown.

It saved the Jaguars from a solo last-place finish in interceptions; their six were tied with Kansas City and the New York Jets.

That total, though, was third-fewest in league history for a 16-game season and the Jaguars spent the off-season addressing that obvious concern.

Signed: Cornerback Davon House, who played only 37 percent of the snaps for Green Bay last year, was signed to four-year contract that included $10 million guaranteed; and free safety Sergio Brown, who played only 51 percent of the snaps for Indianapolis last year, was signed to a three-year, $7 million contract ($1 million guaranteed).

Drafted: James Sample in the fourth round and was converted from strong to free safety.

Demoted: Josh Evans from starting free safety to backup strong safety.

Being counted on: Cornerback Aaron Colvin, who recovered from a January 2014 knee injury, to play the final six games and show a ton of potential.

The Jaguars’ hope is the newbies bring an new dimension to the secondary and are matched by progress from strong safety Johnathan Cyprien and the trio of cornerbacks (Colvin, Gratz and Demetrius McCray).

“It better be [improved],” defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker said of his group with a laugh.

Walker was encouraged by their play during the off-season program.

“I just think that we’re playing faster,” he said. “We have guys that can make plays on the ball. We’re not there yet, but I do see improvement.”

If the Jaguars keep five cornerbacks and four safeties, it’s a safe assumption that eight spots are set: House, McCray, Colvin and Gratz (in that order) at corner and Cyprien, Brown, Sample and Evans (in that order) at safety. That leaves the fifth cornerback spot up for grabs for Rashaad Reynolds, Tommie Campbell and Jeremy Harris to battle for during the preseason.

Most of the competition at this position will be among players locked into the roster.

Who starts opposite House on base-down packages — McCray (12 starts last year) or Gratz (13 starts)? Probably McCray.

“That’s going to be a battle,” coach Gus Bradley said.

Besides playing inside in sub packages, can Colvin get into the mix on an every-down basis (outside in base and inside for sub)? Indications are the coaches like Colvin in a sub package role to start at, but that still means he plays 60 percent of the snaps.

“He has a pretty good football IQ and his athletic ability really fits both,” Walker said.

And will Sample’s broken forearm (sustained June 4) derail his season or merely his training camp? Time will tell.

The most attention will be on House and Cyprien.

The Jaguars paid big money to sign House not because of his past body of work (although impressive at times) but because they feel he will take the next step. House has 14 starts and two interceptions in 40 career games.

But a key statistic are House’s 37 pass breakups in his last 38 games — nearly one per game. He was around the football.

Last year, the Jaguars’ secondary combined for only 26 pass breakups and three interceptions.

Cyprien appeared to find a better niche late last season when he was effective playing the run and covering tight ends. He led the Jaguars with 111 tackles, but the next step — the required step — is making the kind of plays that produce takeaways.

“He’s more mature,” Walker said. “He’s getting a better grasp of the defense so I think he’s getting more comfortable with the things we’re asking of him.”

The Jaguars like Brown’s athleticism to play sideline to sideline, which could allow them to keep Cyprien stationed close to the line of scrimmage.

“He has instincts,” Walker said. “I have a feel that he’s a savvy player.”

The key to getting more interceptions is being more aggressive in coverage and getting more hands on the football.

“I feel better about them,” Bradley said. “They played tighter coverage and challenged things [in the off-season workouts]. Now let’s get some picks.”

Will a rookie carry the load?


New Jaguars running backs coach Kelly Skipper has two big questions to answer when training camp begins July 31.
“Do we have a lead guy and we can complement him, or will we have to share the load?” he said.

Ideally for the Jaguars, rookie T.J. Yeldon will establish himself as the lead guy, followed by Denard Robinson, Toby Gerhart and others.

Only so much can be assessed during the offseason workouts (no pads), especially at running back. But the Jaguars left for summer vacation pleased with Yeldon.

“The impressive thing about T.J. is that he picked up the offense quickly,” Skipper said. “For the most part, when he gets something, he has it [down] and we can move onto the next thing.”

Said coach Gus Bradley: “He’s all football. This kid is internally driven .Every rep he gets, he’s going to take advantage of. I really like him.”

Yeldon has the tools — runner, receiver, pass protector — to be a three-down back. But how soon?

“That’s what we have to find out and find out fast,” Skipper said.

It will be surprising if Yeldon isn’t the tailback for Play 1 in Week 1 — the Jaguars drafted him No. 36 overall to be The Guy. But what kind of work load he gets is unclear. During the preseason, Skipper said he will use a “feel” to see how much Yeldon requires.

“It will be, ‘What gets him ready for the season opener?’ ” Skipper said. “He needs the experience. The NFL is a lot different and we want to make sure he makes the transition and makes it smoothly.”

A smooth transition for Yeldon is critical for the Jaguars’ running game.

In 2012, Maurice Jones-Drew held out and then sustained a season-ending foot injury in Week 7. Two years ago, Jones-Drew sprained his ankle in Week 2. And last year, Gerhart — signed to be the starter — injured his ankle in Week 1.

The Jaguars finished a misleading 21st in rushing yards per game (102.1), chiefly a result of quarterback Blake Bortles’ 419 yards.

After Yeldon is when things get interesting for the Jaguars. Is Robinson the top back-up for early-down work? Will Gerhart be returned to a third-down role he held in Minnesota? Is there room on the roster for Gerhart and veteran Bernard Pierce?

“We have to figure out the 3-4 guys who can be competitive and productive and complement each other,” Skipper said.

Gerhart’s 3.2-yard average on 101 attempts ranked 43rd out of the 45 backs that had at least 100 carries, ahead of only Cleveland’s Ben Tate (3.1/106) and Houston’s Alfred Blue (3.1/169).

But fully healthy during the offseason program, Gerhart began carving out a new niche.

“I saw improvement in his burst and acceleration and he made play after play in the spring so I’m excited to see what he can bring in the fall,” Skipper said.

Robinson’s moment of NFL glory were consecutive 100-yard games against Cleveland (127) and Miami (108) in mid-season. His ticket to a sustainable career, though, will be developing an all-around game, specifically improving his pass protection.

Pierce was claimed on waivers when Baltimore whacked him following a DUI arrest.

“Bernard came in and worked hard so I’m interested to see what he can do,” Skipper said.

Besides new personnel, a big change this year is the lack of a fullback. Greg Jones was the Jaguars’ long-time wrecking ball and Will Ta’ufo’ou handled the duties last year.

“But we have guys who can play the position,” Skipper said. “Toby can play it and we have some tight ends that can play if it asked, they just don’t have the title of ‘fullback.’ ”

That extra roster spot could be used to keep a fifth tailback, which helps the chances of Storm Johnson and undrafted rookie Corey Grant.

Skipper said he still has confidence in Johnson even though he missed several days of OTAs with a back injury and said special teams will be critical for Grant.

A punt returner poszt most teljesen nyílt. Íme az esélyesek:

*Tandon Doss. He was on track to return punts during Sanders’ suspension last year (and maybe beyond) but was lost for the year with a sprained ankle in camp. With Baltimore in 2013, Doss led the NFL with a 15.6-yard return average. He has a career average of 15.3 yards on 27 punts.

*Bryan Walters. Signed from Seattle in March, a hamstring injury caused him to miss most of the OTAs. Last year for the Seahawks, he had 27 punt returns for a 7.7-yard average.

*Rashad Greene. If the Jaguars opt to only five receivers, Greene would likely be the choice. A fifth-round pick this spring, Greene returned 38 punts for a 12.2-yard average and two touchdowns in his four-year Florida State career.

*Corey Grant. The undrafted free agent speedster from Auburn is a candidate to be the Jaguars’ kick returner, but could get a shot returning punts.

*Damian Copeland. Like Grant, he is an undrafted free agent. Like Doss, he was injured in training camp last year and missed the season. Copeland didn’t return punts at Louisville.

The Jaguars’ punt return units have ranked last and 21st the last two years.
