Szerintem igen.

Jaguars' goal is to find third reliable pass-catcher

Maybe seven guys for one spot, or maybe seven guys for no spots.

The Jaguars are that established at the receiver position entering training camp next week.

Locked in are Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Rashad Greene and Marqise Lee. Mostly likely on the roster is Bryan Walters.

If the Jaguars keep five receivers like the last two years, that’s bad news for Arrelious Benn, Tony Washington, Rasheed Bailey, Rashad Lawrence, Jamal Robinson, Shaq Evans and Shane Wynn.

One position where the August drama will be minimal — if everybody stays healthy — is this group whose overhaul started two preseasons ago.

Leading the group are Robinson (80 catches-1,400 yards-14 touchdowns) and Hurns (64-1,031-10). Only the Jaguars, Arizona, Denver and the New York Jets had two 1,000-yard receivers last year and only the Jaguars, Cincinnati and the Jets had two players with at least 10 touchdown catches.

“With those two guys, the game will slow down a tad and they’ll see things better and understand their positions better than they did a year ago,” receivers coach Jerry Sullivan said.

Robinson is the Jaguars’ No. 1 and eligible for a contract extension next offseason.

“He got better and better last year and more confident,” Sullivan said. “The know-how of having played a full year and knowing what to expect will be an asset.”

Because he was undrafted and able to sign an extension after two years, Hurns was rewarded with a four-year, $40 million deal last month.

Robinson will line up exclusively outside, but Hurns will be moved around.

“He’ll play inside some,” Sullivan said. “He’s got a good feel in there for a guy who’s been outside a lot.”

Greene played mostly in the slot last year before and after thumb surgery that landed him on short-term injured reserve.

“I want him to take what he does in practice to the game and not let the game speed up,” Sullivan said. “He was more mature than most as a rookie last year and he’ll keep learning as he goes.”

The wild card is Lee. If healthy, how can he be used? They won’t say it, but it’s to the point that anything the Jaguars get out of him is a bonus. Lee received a ton of snaps in the offseason program because Robinson’s activity in particular was limited.

“[The offseason] was great for Marqise’s confidence because since he’s been here, he had always run into [an injury] roadblock,” Sullivan said. “You could see his confidence improve — he had a good feeling about what he was doing.”

Said Hurns: “Oh man, if Marqise is full strength, he can add an explosive, dynamic weapon to our offense. He’s looking way better as far as his route-running. With him on the field, teams have to be aware of him. They can’t double A-Rob or me.”

And that really should be the goal for the Jaguars during the preseason: establishing a solid No. 3 to take some of the attention away from Robinson and Hurns. If Lee can be a deep threat, great. If Greene can be an effective possession receiver, even better.

Walters enters camp as the solid No. 5, capable of running the entire route tree and find open pockets in zone coverage.

“B-Walt is Mr. Reliable,” Hurns said. “You’ll get the same thing out of him every day. He’ll make the tough catches and he’s also going to win on his routes. He’s a guy everybody can trust.”

Of the remaining receivers, Benn probably has the upper hand; he was on his way to making the team last preseason until breaking his collarbone.

“He’s a big, strong, physical guy,” Sullivan said. “He should be a top-notch special teams guy and be a dependable guy who can come in and be a relief pitcher.”

Yeldon, Ivory looking for form one-two punch

Fantasy football owners looking for insight on how the Jaguars will split the carries between tailbacks Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon — and which one they should draft early — well, Kelly Skipper isn’t showing his hand.

“With Chris and T.J., we’ve got two big backs that will compete and complement each other and share the load and be heavily involved,” said Skipper, the Jaguars’ second-year running backs coach.

The Jaguars drafted Yeldon in last year’s second round and he gained 740 yards before a knee injury kept him out of the final three games. In the opening hours of free agency March 9, they signed Ivory, whose 1,070 yards led the AFC and were fifth in the NFL.

Who takes the first-and-10 snap against Green Bay in Week 1? Don’t know.

Who gets the bulk of the attempts if the Jaguars are attempting to run out the clock in a win? Not sure.

“They’re going to stay fresh and give us a great opportunity to win games,” Skipper said.

Ivory and Yeldon — or Yeldon and Ivory — are the no-doubt top two tailbacks on the roster. But then it gets interesting.

For the second straight year, the Jaguars won’t carry a fullback. They kept five on last year’s opening-day roster. On the roster are Denard Robinson, Corey Grant, Jonas Gray and Joe Banyard and they could battling for two or three spots.

“We’ve got good competition from top to bottom,” Skipper said. “Special teams will probably determine how deep we’ll be on the final roster.”

If healthy, Ivory and Yeldon will get the chunk of the carries.

For the Jaguars last year, Yeldon had 60.3 percent (182 of 302) of the non-quarterback rushing attempts.

For the New York Jets last year, Ivory had 63.9 percent (247 of 386) of the non-quarterback rushing attempts.

Twelve NFL teams last year had two running backs with at least 100 carries, including five playoff teams: Arizona, Denver, Cincinnati, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Despite Ivory’s experience — 70 games and 883 carries — Skipper said the preseason games will be good for him.

“That’s going to be important — training camp and the preseason games are crucial so he can get experience with the different calls and adjustments and be up to speed for the regular season,” Skipper said.

Skipper’s scouting report on Ivory: “He’s a physical runner. He can handle a heavy work-load and the thing about him, he runs in attack mode. … He catches the ball well — that’s the one thing that surprised me. … And he brings a veteran presence.”

Don’t count out Yeldon to be the Week 1 starter, though.

Yeldon was the Jaguars’ go-to back last year, posting two 100-yard games — 105 at Indianapolis and 115 against Buffalo, but only two touchdowns.

Skipper’s scouting report on Yeldon: “He gained valuable experience last year and he improved a lot. The big thing for him is to continue his growth. … He’ll be a major contributor. He can make plays in the run and pass game. … He’s a runner who can slash and make people miss in tight quarters.”

Regardless if the Jaguars keep four or five tailbacks, Skipper said, “some hard decisions,” will be required.

“But that’s a good thing,” Skipper said. “They’re a lot different from each other.”

Lumping them into two categories, Robinson and Grant are in the speed section and Banyard and Gray are in the physical section.

Entering the final year of his contract, Robinson’s role is expected to be reduced for the second straight year — he had 135 carries in 2014 and 67 last year.

“He needs to provide instant offense,” Skipper said. “He has to be consistent with his assignments and work on the little things, like taking the hand-off and being able to stay focused and make plays when he has the opportunity.”

Grant could be the fastest player on the Jaguars – he was unofficially timed at 4.25 and 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Auburn’s Pro Day in March 2015. He was the Jaguars’ main kick returner (27.5-yard average) when a hip injury ended his rookie year after only six games.

“I’m excited to see his growth as a player,” Skipper said. “He’s a one-cut runner that can get to top-speed quickly.”

Grant’s roster spot could hinge on him re-claiming the kick return spot.

Banyard was promoted from the Jaguars’ practice squad for the final five games (no carries). Gray was signed off Miami’s practice squad and gained 54 yards on 14 carries in two games for the Jaguars.

“Joe is more of a bigger back, over 220 pounds [221] and a physical, downhill runner,” Skipper said. “I’m excited to see Jonas after a full offseason in our system. He can stick his foot in the ground and he has power.”

No. Player Age Ht./Wt. Year College 2015 team Contract status Cap number

16 Denard Robinson 25 6-0/215 4 Michigan Jaguars Through 2016 $728,403
Probably in last year with team. Demoted to third-team tailback with Chris Ivory signing and may lose carries to Corey Grant, too.

24 T.J. Yeldon 22 6-1/225 2 Alabama Jaguars Through 2018 $1,344,040
Second-round pick led team with 740 rushing yards on 182 carries. Ivory’s arrival has left the prominence of his role to be determined.

29 Joe Banyard 27 5-10/221 4 Texas-El Paso Jaguars Through 2016 $675,000
First joined Jaguars in 2012, but moved on to New Orleans and Minnesota before returning last October and appearing in five games (no carries).

30 Corey Grant 24 5-11/205 2 Auburn Jaguars Through 2017 $526,666
Six carries for two yards and 27.5-yard kick-return average before hip injury ended year in Week 6. Best chance to make team is winning kick return spot.

33 Chris Ivory 28 6-0/222 7 Tiffin (Ohio) N.Y. Jets Through 2020 $3,500,000
Fifth in NFL last year with 1,070 yards rushing (seven TDs). Jaguars think he and Yeldon will form duo to spark dormant run game.

34 Jonas Gray 26 5-10/225 3 Notre Dame Jaguars Through 2016 $650,000
Signed off Miami’s practice squad last December and rushed 14 times for 54 yards. Could he make Robinson expendable?

Utána a Saints megint TD-t csinált.

Jaguars Position Breakdown: Plenty of pieces in the puzzle for Wash

The Jaguars’ goal has been clear the last two free-agent and drafting seasons: Build a defensive line whose second unit is just as good as the first unit. Period.

It’s why they drafted Dante Fowler and Michael Bennett in 2015 and Yannick Ngakoue and Sheldon Day this year.

It’s why they signed Jared Odrick in 2015 and Malik Jackson this year.

In Year 4 of the regime, the Jaguars feel they’ve finally built a two-platoon line.

“If we stay healthy, I think we [have],” defensive coordinator Todd Wash said. “And we’ve got some guys like [Dan] Skuta and [Ryan] Davis who are outside linebackers on first and second downs and then can go in and play defensive end on third down.

“Realistically, we could have 10 [linemen-types] active for a game.”

Wash, who will continue to serve as defensive line coach, will certainly have more options to put on the field then he did last year, when the Jaguars ranked 15th against the run and tied for 20th in sacks (36).

The Jaguars have kept 10 linemen on the opening-day roster the last two years. Using that number as a guide, here is a projection of the depth chart entering camp next week:

Strong-side end: Odrick and Tyson Alualu.

Nose tackle: Roy Miller and Abry Jones.

Three-technique tackle: Jackson, Sen’Derrick Marks, Day and Bennett.

Weak-side end: Fowler and Ngakoue.

That leaves Richard Ash, Chris Smith, Tyrone Holmes and Bjoern Werner climbing uphill.

The most high-profile newcomers are Fowler (injured last year) and Jackson (a Super Bowl winner with Denver last year).

Fowler participated in all nine Organized Team Activities and two minicamp workouts in May/June and will be looked to be a top-flight pass rusher right away. Wash said the preseason will be “important,” for Fowler.

“Right now, his mind is in a great place,” Wash said. “He’s going to have to play in these preseason games. He’s still a rookie. He hasn’t played for [20 months]. He’s biting on the bit.”

The Jaguars drafted Ngakoue in the third round to be Fowler’s backup but also play opposite him in pass-rushing situations. They should be better than the tandem of Chris Clemons and Andre Branch; if they’re not, the Jaguars are in trouble.

“Yannick is very explosive and you can see we have a lot more team speed at our defensive end position with him and Dante,” Wash said. “We have tremendous speed off the edge.”

At the strong-side end spot, Odrick returns for a second season after leading the Jaguars in sacks (5 1/2) and playing solid run defense.

“A lot of the things I’m doing now will be similar to last year,” Odrick said of the scheme. “I don’t see my role changing too much.”

Miller is a two-down player in the middle and Jackson will start at the three-technique spot who lines up over the guard’s outside shoulder. Jackson will be counted on to provide an interior pass rush.

Marks will a backup in name, but will still play regular snaps. His key is staying healthy — he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in the 2014 finale and tore his triceps tendon in last year’s eighth game.

“He’s getting back to moving the way we thought he was going to move last year after the knee injury,” Wash said.

Jones will back up Miller and is also a candidate to sub for Odrick at end, which would take snaps away from Alualu.

Last year, four Jaguars linemen played at least 50 percent of the snaps: Odrick (75.4), Alualu (59.2), Clemons (56.9) and Branch (51.3). The goal this year is to spread the playing time; by comparison, only two Seattle linemen played at least 50 percent of the snaps last year.

“If you play too many snaps in this heat, it gets to you,” Wash said. “We have to stay fresh for the full 60 minutes. If a guy is a normal third-down pass rusher, but he’s out there on first and second down for a series and it’s a long series, we feel we can get another guy in there to rush on third down and be successful although he may not be a starter. Having so many guys active will help us.”

FTU training camp előtti pozíciós előzetes IV. rész - OL
Jaguars Position Breakdown: Left side of offensive line needs clarity

The Jaguars haven’t declared a starter at left tackle or left guard and are relying on former right guard Brandon Linder to play center for the first time.

Don’t underestimate those issues as much as many outside observers — and even some inside the organization — have done. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson certainly isn’t.

“We have a couple of issues we have to get solved,” Olson said. “I think we have a pretty good feel about the right side and the center position now. The left side of the line will have some competition. We’ll try and make a decision early in training camp.”

The two major decisions: When Kelvin Beachum is cleared from last year’s ACL injury, how quickly will he supplant Luke Joeckel at left tackle? And if that happens, what is Joeckel’s role? Expect those to be answered in time for the Aug. 28 preseason game against Cincinnati.

The secondary decisions: Will the Jaguars stick with Josh Wells and/or Tyler Shatley as developmental backups or keep veterans such as Jeff Linkenbach and Patrick Omameh? We might not get that answer until the final cuts.

What is required for the Jaguars to be competitive is much better play up front. Inconsistency and instability have been two hallmarks for the offensive line since coach Gus Bradley was hired before the 2013 season.

■ The Jaguars have allowed 172 sacks, most in the NFL during that span; the next closest is Miami at 149.

■ Their 21 rushing touchdowns are second-fewest in the NFL, ahead of only San Diego (19).

■ Linder will be the fourth center in as many years, following Brad Meester (2013), Luke Bowanko (2014) and Stefen Wisniewski (2015).

■ Whoever starts at left guard will be the third to play that spot, following Uche Nwaneri (2013) and Zane Beadles (2014-15).

■ Marrone is the first returning offensive line coach — George Yarno (2013) and Luke Butkus (2014) lasted only one season each.

The Jaguars enter camp feeling good about three of the five positions — Linder, right guard A.J. Cann and right tackle Jermey Parnell.

Linder was the Jaguars’ best lineman as a rookie in 2014, but was lost last year after only three games because of a shoulder injury that required surgery. And instead of pursuing free agent Alex Mack or re-signing Wisniewski, the Jaguars decided to move Linder to center.

“The toughest transition on an offensive line is going from tackle to guard or going from tackle to center — it’s not as difficult going from guard to center and he has very good foot speed, which is something you need there,” Marrone said. “He’s done everything extremely well.”

The Jaguars feel similarly confident about Cann, last year’s third-round pick. He replaced Linder and will remain at right guard. Cann is strong, physical and savvy.

“The No. 1 thing I liked about A.J.’s first year was his toughness,” Marrone said. “We just really threw him in there. He would admit he made some mistakes and then we got to see how he [responded] and I thought he did extremely well — he let the mistakes go, he learned from them and he got better and better as the season went along.”

On Cann’s flank is Parnell, who should benefit from his first full season as a starter.

“Really, Jermey is no different from A.J. as far as game experience, and when you go through a whole season for the first time, you learn how to structure your week — how you want to eat, how you want to take care of your body and how to mentally prepare,” Marrone said. “He missed some crucial time [in the offseason with a broken hand], but hopefully we’ll be able to make that up in training camp.”

Now back to the issues.

Joeckel allowed a team-worst 10 sacks last year and had trouble handling speed rushers. The Jaguars acted by signing Beachum from Pittsburgh despite his ACL injury that has so far kept him off the field.

If Beachum is healthy, well, he’s not here to sit on the bench or start at another spot. He’ll be the left tackle.

“He’s someone who has played at a very high level against very good competition,” Marrone said. “He basically does a lot of things well overall.”

Beachum at left tackle would mean Joeckel is a backup swing tackle, back-up guard/tackle or starting left guard. Mackenzy Bernadeau took the first-team snaps at that position in the offseason program.

On sliding Joeckel inside, general manager Dave Caldwell said: “It’s an option or he wouldn’t have taken snaps there [this spring].”

Lower on the depth chart, the Jaguars have been enamored with Wells (a tackle) and Shatley (a guard/center) since they were signed as undrafted free agents two years ago. But they have no NFL starts. They would appear to have the edge entering camp over Linkenbach (36 starts) and Omameh (25 starts), who were signed after the offseason program started, but could emerge.

Jaguars position preview: Bortles gets advice on taking next step

When last year ended, Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles met with offensive coordinator Greg Olson and quarterbacks coach Nathaniel Hackett, who presented No. 5 with an offseason to-do list.

At the top: Contact some of his colleagues.

“We wanted him to seek the quarterbacks out who have a similar style of play and guys who were at the top of their games,” Olson said.

Bortles talked with Arizona’s Carson Palmer and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers.

“I bounced ideas off of them and asked them, ‘What would you do differently?’” Bortles said. “Aaron was awesome. One of the things he said was, ‘Don’t try and score 21 points every time you have the ball.’ That’s what I’ve had to learn.

“Carson was good. He’s laid back, and he’s an unbelievable quarterback and leader in the NFL. He said similar things. He said, ‘Just continue to build chemistry and rapport with the guys you’re with.’”

The Jaguars hope Bortles’ offseason conversations with Palmer and Rodgers plus his continuing relationship with Olson and Hackett equal another leap forward in production. Bortles’ 35 touchdown passes last year were a franchise record and tied for second in the NFL — very good. His 18 interceptions led the league — not very good.

Of all the positions on the roster entering training camp, quarterback is the most settled. Bortles is the starter, Chad Henne is the backup and rookie Brandon Allen will either be No.3 or on the practice squad. Max Wittek is the fourth quarterback.

Bortles enters his second camp as a starter. Last year, he was all over the quarterback leaderboard — ninth in completions (355), sixth in attempts (606), seventh in yards (4,428), tied for first with Rodgers in completions of at least 25 yards (39) and the aforementioned touchdown and interception rankings. With Bortles leading the way, the Jaguars’ passing game — and offense, for that matter — had a pulse for the first time in five years. Receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns had 1,400 and 1,031 yards, respectively.

But now it’s about the Next Step for Bortles.

Fewer turnovers (23 last year). More first-quarter production (35 points). A higher completion percentage (58.6). And fewer sacks (51).

The biggest plus for Bortles is his familiarity with the playbook. The Jaguars cruised through the re-installation process this spring and should be able to focus on specialized situations in training camp (such as third down, red zone and hurry-up), which could fuel a quicker start to the season.

“There were some shaky days [in the offseason], but I think we formed a bit of consistency throughout — the mistakes made early were corrected and weren’t made again,” Bortles said last month. “It was night and day compared to OTAs last year. The guys were just sharper and more on it mentally.”

The Jaguars are counting on Bortles’ comfort level with the system and his teammates to translate into fewer mistakes.

“Every day, we try to hone it down to a couple of things, whether it’s footwork or understanding a situation or situationally,” Hackett said. “Sometimes, I think we have to all sit back and go, ‘Wow, he’s still very young.’”

Bortles is still young — 30 games and 29 starts into his career and 24 years old; Palmer and Rodgers didn’t start until they were 25. Helping Bortles in-house will be Henne, who turned 31 earlier this month.

Henne hasn’t played a snap since being replaced by Bortles at halftime of the 2014 home opener, but he signed his third two-year contract with the Jaguars in March.

“Chad’s the best — he’s another coach out there,” Hackett said.

Allen, a seventh-round pick, caught the Jaguars’ attention when he played for them at the Senior Bowl. If he plays as well in the preseason as the coaches thought he practiced in May/June, Allen could make the 53-man roster. The Jaguars kept only two quarterbacks on the active roster last year.

“He’s an intelligent guy,” Hackett said. “He’s a natural thrower.”

No. Player Age Ht./Wt. Yr. College 2015 team* Contract status Cap number

Franchise-record 35 TD passes (tied for second in NFL) and league-high 18 INTs last year. Next step includes eliminating key turnovers and getting offense off to better starts in games.

6 Max Wittek 22 6-4/ 236 R Hawaii Hawaii Through 2018 $450,000
Played at USC and Hawaii, throwing only 366 career passes. Limited by knee injury last year. If the Jaguars keep Brandon Allen as No. 3 quarterback, slim chance Wittek is kept on practice squad.

7 Chad Henne 31 6-3/ 220 9 Michigan Jaguars Through 2017 $4,750,000
Working on third two-year contract with Jaguars. Has 18-35 record as starter (5-17 with Jaguars). Last year was first time he didn’t attempt a pass all season. Perfect backup for Bortles.

9 Brandon Allen 22 6-1/ 217 R Arkansas Arkansas Through 2019 $481,068
Seventh-round pick impressed coaches during OTAs enough to predict he’ll make team. Went 18-20 as college starter and threw school-record 64 touchdown passes.

Jaguars position preview: Addition of Jack gives linebacker unit significant upgrade

What we know about Jaguars second-round pick Myles Jack: He is a rare athlete, is healthy, is the presumptive middle linebacker in 2017 and is adding a play-making dimension the organization hasn’t had in years.

The expectations inside and outside EverBank Field are that Jack can be a game-changer.

“He’s a freak,” defensive coordinator Todd Wash said.

But as the Jaguars continue the countdown to training camp, two questions about Jack lack clarity: What position will he play? And which situations will he play?

Jack is learning middle linebacker, which the coaches believe will give him a broader knowledge of the defense. But don’t be surprised if he takes snaps at the strong-side spot. And expect Jack to play on sub-package downs (five defensive backs).

Jack is one of five linebackers basically locked onto the initial 53-man roster, joining Paul Posluszny (middle), Telvin Smith (weak-side) and Dan Skuta and Ryan Davis (both strong-side).

That leaves one spot available for Jordan Tripp, Hayes Pullard, Sean Porter, Joplo Bartu and Thurston Armbrister.

“This group is deep,” linebackers coach Robert Saleh said. “It will sort itself out, but there are going to be some very, very hard decisions.”

An easy decision for the Jaguars, once the first round of the draft ended, was to get in position to take Jack. They traded up two spots to No. 36.

UCLA’s class schedule prevented Jack from participating in the Jaguars’ off-season program until June 10, limiting him to two practices. Jack’s crash-course will resume when the rookies report to camp July 25.

Jack is listed at 6 foot 1 and 245 pounds — big enough to take on guards and tackles in the run game and quick enough to cover slot receivers.

“He’s rare because he’s such a big human being,” Saleh said. “He looks like a linebacker but moves like a safety. As the mental part grows, we’ll see [the athleticism] come to fruition more.”

The Jaguars feel good about Jack, but they are also confident in Posluszny and Smith.

Entering his 10th NFL season, Posluszny, 31, looked quick moving around the field during the offseason program. He has at least 115 tackles in his seven full years, but has had issues covering downfield. The Jaguars will have a tough decision to make on him — is he a two- or an every-down player? — if he has a strong preseason in pass defense.

“[Posluszny] is a warrior,” Saleh said. “He’s everything you look for in a professional as far as showing up every day, doing exactly what you want him to do and doing things exactly right. He plays fast and smart and with great technique.”

Smith broke out with a 128-tackle season. Eligible for a contract extension after this year, the best way for him to get big money is to create more takeaways — he has 4.5 sacks, two interceptions and two fumble recoveries in 30 games.

But Saleh said he “never talks about production,” with Smith.

“If Telvin operates at his highest ability, we trust that whatever the end result is, it’s going to be pretty good,” Saleh said.

At the strong-side spot, Skuta returns, but will also work as a situational defensive end. Davis has moved to the strong-side position, but will still take pass-rushing snaps.

After the top five, Tripp could have the inside track to a roster spot because he can play all three linebacker positions and all four special teams units.

Armbrister, last year’s back-up middle linebacker, has been moved to the strong-side Pullard, Bartu and Porter are long shots to make the roster.

Fell the second round and Jaguars traded up two spots to take him at No. 36. Jack will play, but what position and how much is unclear.

50 Telvin Smith WLB 25 6-3/223 3 Florida St. Jaguars Through 2017 $652,763
Second on Jaguars and sixth in NFL with 128 tackles. Next step includes more takeaways (only 1 INT/2 FF last year).

51 Paul Posluszny MLB 31 6-2/240 10 Penn State Jaguars Through 2017 $5,166,666
Fifth in the NFL last year with 133 tackles and added three INTs. A solid off-season put him in position to remain three-down player.

52 Hayes Pullard MLB/WLB 24 6-0/236 2 USC Jaguars Through 2018 $525,000
Signed off Cleveland’s practice squad last October. A big hitter, but tough to see how he makes team.

53 Sean Porter OLB 25 6-1/242 4 Texas A&M Jaguars Through 2017 $600,000
Appeared in only one regular season game (2014 with Bengals) since being drafted in fourth round in 2013.

55 Dan Skuta SLB 30 6-2/250 8 Grand Valley St. Jaguars Through 2019 $3,600,000
Favorite to start at strong-side linebacker in base defense, but biggest impact could be as situational pass rusher at defensive end.

57 Thurston Armbrister SLB 23 6-3/235 2 Miami Jaguars Through 2017 $529,166
Made team as undrafted free agent last year and started three games, but addition of Jack and progress of others hurt chances of sticking.

58. Jordan Tripp WLB/MLB 25 6-3/244 3 Montana Jaguars Through 2016 $600,000
Impressed coaches in off-season by learning all three positions. Favorite to win sixth and final linebacker spot.

59 Ryan Davis SLB 27 6-2/270 5 Bethune-Cookman Jaguars Through 2016 $2,553,000
Moved from defensive line to equal parts strong-side linebacker/pass-rushing end. The latter is his strength.

Jaguars position preview: Upgrading secondary a must; Ramsey, Gipson provide hope

Long gone are cornerbacks Alan Ball, Will Blackmon and Mike Harris and safeties Sergio Brown, Winston Guy, Dwight Lowery and Chris Prosinski.

Still around but low on the depth chart are cornerbacks Dwayne Gratz and Demetrius McCray and safety Josh Evans.

Since coach Gus Bradley was hired in 2013, the moving target that is finding a competent NFL secondary has been largely missed by the Jaguars.

Until now?

“On paper and looking at the potential, there’s no question we have a better group,” defensive backs coach DeWayne Walker said.

The Jaguars signed free safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Prince Amukamara and drafted cornerback Jalen Ramsey. They join strong safety Johnathan Cyprien and cornerbacks Davon House and Aaron Colvin as the top six defensive backs entering training camp.

The Jaguars need to get more production from the back end. In the last three years, the secondary has combined for only 12 interceptions. The Jaguars have ranked 25th, 22nd and 29th in passing yards allowed per game.

Recognizing the deficiencies, management signed House last year (team-high four picks) and then added Gipson, Amukamara and Ramsey.

Not many seats are available in the defensive backs meeting room.

An educated and conservative estimate has the Jaguars keeping five cornerbacks and four safeties. Not counting Colvin (four-game suspension), there are eight locks: House, Ramsey, Amukamara and Nick Marshall at cornerback and Gipson, Cyprien, James Sample and Peyton Thompson at safety. That means Gratz, McCray and Evans — all 2013 draft picks — could be in trouble.

The centerpieces of the secondary need to be Gipson and Ramsey.

Signed to a five-year, $36 million contract ($12 million guaranteed), Gipson gives the Jaguars their best chance to solidify free safety. He made the Pro Bowl in 2014 for Cleveland and has 14 interceptions in 50 career games.

If effective, Gipson will allow the Jaguars to play Cyprien closer to the line of scrimmage.

“My job is to make them say, ‘Hey, we underpaid this guy,’” Gipson said. “I want to go out there and exceed expectations.”

Ramsey, selected with the No. 5 overall pick, sustained a knee injury and underwent surgery May 24, but is expected to be ready for training camp.

Ramsey will play at one outside spot opposite House and is a candidate to slide inside to cover the slot receiver during Colvin’s suspension.

“We all know [Ramsey] has the skill set,” Gipson said. “I’m excited to get out there and play with him.”

Amukamara is on a one-year prove-it contract — if he plays 16 games, he’ll get a multiyear deal somewhere (maybe with the Jaguars). After floating the idea of him playing inside, that has been nixed.

“He’s just a technician and that’s the kind of cornerback I want when I’m in the middle of the field,” Gipson said. “He’s an old-school football player. He’s physical, he can run and he can play press.”

Colvin’s suspension was announced April 8 and while eligible to practice and play in the preseason, he can’t play until Oct. 16 at Chicago.

Colvin won’t count against the 53-man roster so that could create a roster spot unless the Jaguars keep an extra defensive lineman or linebacker. Gratz was moved inside to cover the slot receiver and is an option or if undrafted rookie free safety Jarrod Wilson flashes like he did in mini-camp, he could squeeze onto the roster.

At strong safety, Cyprien is the favorite to beat out Sample. In the final year of his rookie contract, Cyprien must tackle better (team-high 21 missed tackles last year) to command a pay raise next March.

Sample was a strong safety two years at Louisville and was used at free safety by the Jaguars as a rookie before a season-ending shoulder injury.

Thompson, a reserve cornerback last year, has been moved to backup free safety.

The Jaguars signed three undrafted free agents —Wilson and cornerbacks Mike Hilton and Briean Boddy-Calhoun. They could be competing for one practice spot if Wilson doesn’t make the roster.

No. Player Pos. Age Ht./Wt. Yr. College 2015 team* Contract status Cap number

20 Jalen Ramsey CB 21 6-1/ 209 R Florida St. Florida State Through 2019 $4,245,636
Fifth overall pick could have heavy workload in first four games — outside on base downs, covering slot receiver in nickel.

21 Prince Amukamara CB 27 6-0/ 207 6 Nebraska NY Giants Through 2016 $5,593,750
Signed prove-it contract in March. Missed 13 games last two years and then was limited in offseason workouts because of injury.

22 Aaron Colvin CB 24 6-0/ 194 3 Oklahoma Jaguars Through 2017 $713,288
Suspended first four games for failed illegal substance test. Will cover slot receiver. No INTs in two years, but strong blitzer.

23 James Sample SS 24 6-2/ 215 2 Louisville Jaguars Through 2018 $662,145
Broken forearm and shoulder injury limited him to four games in 2015. Back at natural position. Probably a backup.

25 Peyton Thompson FS 25 5-10/ 185 2 San Jose St. Jaguars Through 2016 $600,000
Backup cornerback in 2015 has moved to backup free safety. Able to play slot corner and also core special teamer.

26 Josh Evans S 25 6-0/ 210 4 Florida Jaguars Through 2016 $1,703,205
Started 36 games in first three years at free safety (no INTs) but may need great camp to remain on roster.

27 Dwayne Gratz CB 26 5-11/ 206 4 UConn Jaguars Through 2016 $1,845,394
Former third-round pick has only three INTs in 37 games (25 starts). Could be fifth cornerback during Colvin’s suspension.

30 Briean Boddy-Calhoun CB 22 5-11/ 190 R Minnesota Univ. of Minn. Through 2018 $450,000
Ten INTs in 25 games for Gophers earned him undrafted free agent contract. Solid camp could equal practice squad spot.

31 Davon House CB 27 6-0/ 196 6 N. Mexico St. Jaguars Through 2018 $6,000,000
Was Jaguars’ best CB in 2015 with team-high four INTs and 23 pass break-ups. Better pass rush should benefit his gambling style.

35 Demetrius McCray CB 25 6-2/ 194 4 Appalach. St. Jaguars Through 2016 $691,741
It just hasn’t happened for McCray in the NFL — no INTs and only six pass break-ups in 46 games (16 starts). Surprise if makes it.

36 Josh Johnson CB 25 5-10/ 200 1 Purdue British Col. (CFL) Through 2017 $450,000
Signed in February before arrivals of Amukamara and Ramsey. Only regular season experience is 34 games in CFL.

37 Johnathan Cyprien SS 25 6-0/ 223 4 Florida Intl. Jaguars Through 2016 $1,740,170
Team-high 21 missed tackles last year; team believes playing him close to line of scrimmage more often will better fit his game.

39 Tashaun Gipson FS 25 5-11/ 205 5 Wyoming Cleveland Through 2020 $4,206,250
Fourth free safety in as many years is by far the Jaguars’ most established. Fourteen INTs in 50 games for Cleveland.

41 Nick Marshall CB 24 6-1/ 206 2 Auburn Jaguars Through 2017 $526,666
Former college QB spent last year learning new position. Has overwhelming support within organization, which is why he’s safe.

42 Earl Wolff SS 26 5-11/ 210 2 N.C. State Jaguars Through 2017 $625,000
Played 18 games (seven starts) for Eagles in 2013-14 and finished last year on Jaguars’ practice squad. Long shot to make roster.

47 Jarrod Wilson FS 22 6-2/ 210 R Michigan Michigan Through 2018 $450,000
Keep an eye on him. Showed play-making skills in offseason workouts. Best chance is being extra DB during Colvin’s suspension.

48 Mike Hilton CB 22 5-9/ 184 R Ole Miss Ole Miss Through 2018 $450,000
Shortest cornerback acquired by this regime, can play all over the secondary, but will take most reps over slot receiver.
