Uncovering why Jaguars' offense has failed so often in red zone

T.J. Yeldon turned the swing pass into a 20-yard gain and a short reception into a 14-yard play and Allen Robinson out-jumped his defender for a 25-yard catch.
Against the reeling San Diego Chargers last week, the Jaguars rapidly moved into the red zone on their first possession. Score early and they would begin to squash their opponent’s will.

Instead, the Jaguars hit a figurative concrete wall and their momentum screeched to a maddening halt. Three plays gained eight yards and out trotted Jason Myers for a field goal. He’s done that a lot lately.

Entering Sunday’s game at Tennessee, the Jaguars’ red zone offense is broken.

For the season, the Jaguars’ 41.7 red zone touchdown percentage (15 for 36) is third-worst in the league, continuing a four-year stay at or near the bottom of the league.

But the last five games have seen the Jaguars become stunningly inept.

Seventeen red zone trips and five touchdowns. Four times inside the opponent’s 5-yard line and no touchdowns. And a whopping 21 plays that went for no gain or negative yardage.

The Jaguars’ 29.4 percent red zone touchdown rate over the last five games is worst in the NFL; the next least-efficient team is Buffalo (40 percent) and the league average is 55.4 percent.

“We got better [in October] and then certainly we’ve hit a skid again,” offensive coordinator Greg Olson said.

Said coach Gus Bradley: “Obviously, it’s an issue.”

How has it gotten so bad?

Theories are plentiful inside and outside EverBank Field about the Jaguars’ struggles, from the ridiculous (one radio-show caller half-joked/half-suggested Chad Henne should take over the offense once they reach the red zone) to the practical (plays aren’t being made).

Here are five theories — and a conclusion — to digest:

THEORY 1:
THE PLAY-CALLING IS POOR

Not likely.

Examining the current 5-of-17 skid, the only nit-pick with Olson’s calls is sticking with Toby Gerhart on third- and fourth-and-goal from the Buffalo 1 after he was stopped on first and second down.

And as we’ll later get into, execution is a big reason why the Jaguars have been locked out of the end zone. Against Buffalo … First down: Missed blocks by left guard Zane Beadles and right tackle Jermey Parnell. Second down: Missed block by right guard A.J. Cann. Third down: Missed blocks by Beadles, left tackle Luke Joeckel and tight end Marcedes Lewis. Fourth down: Missed block by fullback Tyson Alualu.

Olson’s job is to create matchups like Robinson in man coverage with no safety help, tight end Julius Thomas against a linebacker in the slot or a defensive back out wide.

A rub that can be pinned not only on Olson but the football operations is the lack of a fullback. Alualu has been used in that situation, but with iffy results.

THEORY 2: THE QB IS MISSING THINGS

Yes.

Bortles admitted as much this week.

Week 9 at the Jets. On first-and-goal from the 17, Thomas was one-on-one against safety Dion Bailey, but Bortles underthrew him.

Week 10 at Baltimore. On first-and-goal from the 10, Robinson had a step on safety Terrance Brooks while running a corner route, but Bortles overshot him.

Week 11 against Tennessee. On first-and-10 from the 19, Bortles missed Marqise Lee on a quick slant from the left slot and overthrew an open Marcedes Lewis on a corner route.

And last week against San Diego. On first-and-goal from the 11, Thomas was open down the left seam with a double move, but Bortles threw incomplete to Lewis.

“There were guys open,” Bortles said of the Chargers game. “There were things there, plays to be made. We’ve got to continue to pay attention to the details and execute.”

Said quarterbacks coach Nathaniel Hackett: “When you get down there, it’s about trusting how quick things are going to happen. It’s one step — throw! It’s such a finite world down there so you have to trust what you see. And that’s what we tell him — ‘Trust what you see, run around and make a play.’ ”

The Jaguars need Bortles to be more accurate in the red zone (he has a 95.3 rating but a 47.8 completion percentage in the last five games) and more assertive — if it’s there, run for the goal line or first-down marker.

THEORY 3: THE OFFENSIVE LINE ISN’T BLOCKING

Accurate.

The 14 red zone rushes by Jaguars running backs during the current slump have gained a total of 21 yards. The blocking is lacking, period.

During the Buffalo four-down debacle, there were seven missed blocks.

Against the Jets, Bortles was forced to scramble — he was eventually sack/stripped — when Cann was beat by nose tackle Damon Harrison. Against Baltimore, Beadles was beat by linebacker Daryl Smith, who limited Yeldon to a two-yard gain. Against Tennessee, tight end Clay Harbor whiffed on linebacker Avery Williamson, who stuffed Yeldon for no gain.

Olson has called five first-down rushes in the red zone, and they’ve gained one, zero, one, five and five yards. Facing second-and-long outside the 5-yard line — automatic passing situation, which takes the ball out of Yeldon’s hands.

“It’s one little thing,” Joeckel said. “It’s not like every guy is making a mistake [on the same play]. When we’re running the ball, the offensive line has to do a better job of finishing our blocks and allowing the back to get a few extra yards.”

THEORY 4: THE DEFENSES ARE WINNING, TOO

Absolutely.

Entering last week, San Diego had used a three-man pass rush in the red zone twice all season. And the Jaguars had faced that look less than five times.

But the Chargers threw the new wrinkle at Bortles five times and he was 2-of-4 passing for eight yards and one over-the-line-of-scrimmage penalty.

Dropping eight into coverage further clogged up the windows for Bortles to throw into.

“It’s a huge difference because [they can cover] all of the things you want to hit quickly and it also allows them to play deeper faster so if you have something you want to hit behind them, they have a better chance at that play because they don’t have to honor anything underneath,” Hackett said. “A difficult coverage to deal with.”

Throughout the five-game slump, the Jaguars have seen Robinson and Thomas get extra attention via bracket coverage (in front and behind them). Defenses are respecting the Jaguars’ playmakers.

“We’ll continue to have a better understanding of what teams are trying to do to us,” said Thomas, who has two red-zone catches (one touchdown) in the last five games. “We have the weapons we need to score points, it’s a matter of making sure we’re in the right spots.”

THEORY 5: THE PLAYERS ARE PRESSING

Probably yes.

The Jaguars say no.

“You don’t stress over it one bit,” said receiver Bryan Walters, who dropped a red-zone touchdown pass at Baltimore. “You can’t because that’s when you start tightening up.”

Said Bradley: “The big thing is not to go out there and press … that’s not the issue.”

Exhibit A of a player pressing, though, was Bortles twice crossing the line of scrimmage and throwing an illegal pass.

“I don’t know how you explain that,” Olson said. “I don’t think Blake’s pressing, I think he just wants to score touchdowns.

“Down there, you have to make quick decisions … and correct decisions.”

This is the most impossible theory to prove or disprove. But it merits discussion and further monitoring.

CONCLUSION …

There isn’t a grand fix for the Jaguars’ red zone woes — the season is almost over and only a floor-to-ceiling self-review of the scheme and league-wide analysis of what the other 31 teams are doing (both offensively and defensively) will provide insight.

It’s about all of the above. Receivers getting open. Pass protectors dominating their blocks. The quarterback being sharper. “We know how to do it; we just have to do a better job,” Joeckel said. “We have to trust our process, play our game and finish.”

1. Step up! Hurns kihagyja a meccset, pályafutása során először, és a tegnapi roster move alapján Waltersre sem számítok. Ez azt jelenti, hogy az albínó tigris és Greene vállaira sokkal nagyobb teher fog hárulni, mint eddig idén bármikor. Leenek különösen fontos a mai találkozó, mert tőle szinte semmit nem láttunk idén. Ha szeretne sokáig az NFLben maradnia, akkor ideje lenne villantania egy nagyot.

2. Találj be kintről! Ha ennyire nem megy a red zoneban, akkor oldjuk meg kissé távolabbról. Bortles vezeti az egész NFLt 20 yardnál nagyobb passzokban, A-Rob pedig elkapásokban jár ugyanebben a kategóriában az élen. Ha nem meg a 20ason belül, akkor távolabbról kell próbálkozni.

3. Megfogni Marcust! Mariota először fog olyan ellenfél ellen játszani, akivel már volt dolga az NFLben. Láthattuk az első meccsen, hogy úgy tűnik a Titansnek is megvan a maga QBja, de idén még a saját tapasztalatlansága és körülötte lévő fegyverek hiánya miatt még könnyeben legyőzhető, mint teszem azt már akár jövőre is. A futásaira figyeljük, mert abból a TNFe is bajok voltak. És ha lehet lehet ne engedjük, hogy és Walker túlságosan összemelegedjenek.

4. Menj rá a rekordokra! Könnyen lehet, hogy Allen Robinson olyan produkál, mint 10 éve senki Jaguars mezben (1000 elkapott yard), és Blake olyat, amit még soha senki (24 passzolt TD). Mellesleg Robinson 2 TDre van a franchise szezoncsúcstól. Ha mind a 3 összejönne, az nagyon sokat lendítene egy mai esetleges W ügyén.

5. Ne verd meg magad! Ez az egész csapatra is vonatkozik, de különösen Bortlesre. ideje lenne Blakenek lehozni egy meccset pick és C'mon Man-be való jelenetek nélkül. Persze a legjobbak is képesek hibázni, de le lehetne hozni 1-1 meccset időnként mutatóba azok nélkül is. Jó lenen, ha nem az újonc QB tűnne ma érettebb játékosnak a pályán.

Myers, Cyprien, Clemons és Evans mind fullosan edzettek, utóbb non contact formában. Miller pihenőnapot kapott. Nem edzett Hurns, Marcedes, Walters, Tony Gerhart, Skuta és Pierce.

Ha Walters sem lesz hadra fogható Hurns mellett, akkor Marqisera hirtelen nagy terhek fognak nehezedni. Ugyanez igaz Greenere is.

Blake tegnap elég sokat beszélt Marqiseről és a bizonyítási lehetőségről a számára, szóval albínó tigris lehet több elkapást produkál vasárnap, mint eddig összesen a 12 meccsen. 5 elkapása van 51 yardért, és 3 futása 25ért...Gus is megerősítette, hogy Lee olyan állapotban van, hogy 40-50 snapet képes játszani, ha kell.

Tegnap hatalmas esőben tartottuk az edzés nagy részét, ha esetleg megint leszakad az ég alja Nashvilleben mint múlt vasárnap, akkor tudtunk rá gyakorolni egy kicsit.

Lee vagy Walters. Walters Mr. Megbízható nálunk az idén, ezért felé hajlanék, de Lee nagy esélyéről beszél mindenki a héten, szóval őt sem zárnám ki.
