Ha a tavalyi szezon utolsó hat meccsén (erősen visszafogva) dobott 3 INT-et, míg a többit a 3. meccs közepétől (14), akkor hogyan is kéne extrapolálnunk?

Finally, football.

When the Jaguars’ quarterbacks and rookies report to training camp Monday, it will be 210 days since the 2014-ending loss at Houston.

The 90-man roster includes 36 new players, a 40 percent turnover from training camp last year. Also new are four assistants (all on offense): Greg Olson (coordinator), Doug Marrone (offensive line), Kelly Skipper (running backs) and Nathaniel Hackett (quarterbacks).

The full-squad reporting date is Thursday and the first practice Friday.

Here are 10 questions about the Jaguars:

1. Besides staying healthy, what should be the camp objectives for quarterback Blake Bortles?

Re-establish a rhythm with receiver Marqise Lee, who missed the OTAs/minicamp with a knee injury; gain a rapport with center Stefen Wisniewski, who sat out the spring following shoulder surgery; continue to make the strides with his fundamentals; throw it to tight end Julius Thomas as much as possible.

2. This will be our first look at what Olson emphasizes during a practice. What should we expect?

Olson will always be with the quarterbacks during individual drills and in constant communication with them during 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work. Looking for him? Look for Nos. 5, 6, 7 and 9.

Also, Olson and Skipper have stressed the importance of pass protection by their running backs. Maybe that means running backs-vs.-linebackers drills, something that hasn’t been present the last two camps.

3. Which of the individual matchups will be most interesting to watch once the pads go on Aug. 5?

Left tackle Luke Joeckel vs. pass rusher Andre Branch — both players are being counted on to make big jumps in their production. Right tackle Jermey Parnell vs. defensive end Jared Odrick — both were expensive free agent additions and camp will be our chance to get familiar with them; receiver Allen Robinson vs. cornerback Davon House — the Jaguars’ No. 1 at their respective positions should hope to face off; and anybody on defense vs. Thomas — get ready for a show by No. 80.

4. Which position would the Jaguars most likely address through the waiver wire (or other means) before Sept. 13?

Linebacker. The Jaguars would have liked to add one in the draft and were high on Mississippi State’s Benardrick McKinney and Miami’s Denzel Perryman. But they went Nos. 42 to Buffalo and 48 to San Diego, respectively, the Jaguars went in other directions.

If the group of players vying for the backup spots — Jeremiah George, Khairi Fortt, John Lotulelei and Thurston Armbrister — don’t distinguish themselves on defense or special teams, the Jaguars shouldn’t hesitate to bring in new faces.

5. Two-part question about the center position: A) Who wins it and B) When will it be decided?

If Wisniewski shows his shoulder is 100 percent, we expect him to beat out Luke Bowanko.

Ideally, the Jaguars finalized the decision entering the third preseason game (Aug. 28 against Detroit) so the Week 1 starting offensive line can begin to establish some continuity.

6. The Jaguars had the most starts in the NFL last year by rookies (82, well-ahead of second-place Oakland, 63). How many newbies will make this year’s Week 1 roster?

On our initial 53-man projection following minicamp, we had nine rookies: Armbrister, guard A.J. Cann, defensive tackle Michael Bennett, safety James Sample, tight end Ben Koyack, receivers Rashad Greene and Neal Sterling and running backs T.J. Yeldon and Corey Grant. Defensive end Dante Fowler will be placed on injured reserve.

One player generating fan interest is Nick Marshall. We think transitioning to a new position (quarterback to cornerback) is too big an ask right away, but the Jaguars should put him on the practice squad if they like his progress during camp.

7. Which veterans could be on the bubble?

On Draft Weekend, the guess was left guard Zane Beadles after the Jaguars used a third-round pick on Cann. But Beadles earned good reviews from the coaching staff for his improvement during the offseason. We think he’s safe.

So who? If Wisniewski can’t win the starting job at center, maybe him. The thing about this roster, it’s still young so the Jaguars want to keep as much experience as possible.

8. Will we see defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks at all during the preseason?

The Jaguars should keep Marks in figurative bubble wrap until Sept. 13 against Carolina. He tore his ACL last Dec. 29.

If we get to Labor Day and Marks hasn’t practiced yet, then it’s time to be concerned. He knows the defense so that’s not an issue, it’s only a matter of getting used to game-speed activity. It’s not important for him to play in a preseason game.

9. Who faces the least amount of competition in training camp?

Carson Tinker. He’s the only long snapper on the roster.

10. Who wins the punt and kick returner spots?

Mike Thomas and Rashad Jennings. Just kidding.

We’ll go with Tandon Doss on punts because he has the most experience at it of anybody on the roster and Grant as the kick returner.

Jaguars coach Gus Bradley's task: Difficult, but not impossible
Gus Bradley is 7-25 through two years as coach of the Jaguars

P hiladelphia Eagles coach Greasy Neale won four games in his first two years, but later captured two consecutive NFL championships.
Pittsburgh Steelers coach Chuck Noll won six games in his first two years, but later made history with four Super Bowl titles.

Earlier this summer, the slow starts and eventual accomplishments by Neale and Noll were relayed to Jaguars coach Gus Bradley, he of seven wins through two seasons.

“SO YOU’RE SAYING THERE’S A CHANCE?!” Bradley bellowed as he leaned forward in his office chair.

There remains a chance for Bradley, after a 7-25 start to his head-coaching career, to become the long-term big whistle in Jacksonville.

But things need to start happening. Year 3 is usually progress-or-else for coaches who have been hovering around the .500 mark, even more so if they’ve gone 4-12 and 3-13 like Bradley.

When the Jaguars open their training camp practice schedule Friday, Bradley will continue to go about changing the well-established normal — for his bosses (owner Shad Khan and general manager Dave Caldwell), for the franchise (14 wins the last four years), for the fans (who, by and large, have remained patient) and for his players (who are loyal to him).

If 2013 was about simply getting through the season and 2014 about being more competitive, this year is about bottom-line results.

“I like the way our team is developing,” Bradley said. “We have guys who are hungry and spirited. What does that mean? Where will it take us? I’m not sure.”

What is clear is that simply making it to Year 3, Bradley has done something rare.

Bradley is only the 13th coach in NFL history to get a third year despite winning seven or fewer games in his first two seasons (not counting expansion teams).

And Bradley has the fourth-worst opening two-year coaching record during the 16-game era, which started in 1978, and he’s the only one to get a third year (again, excluding expansion teams).

The translation to all of this: Caldwell and Bradley inherited a dumpster fire when they were hired a week apart in January 2013. They needed time to build.

Rough first year

Sitting in his office earlier this summer, Bradley was asked if he realized how bad the Jaguars were upon his appointment in January 2013.

“Not too much,” he said. “I knew some things would have to take place and how we would go about it during [the interview with Caldwell]. I knew we would be playing young guys and I was OK with that.”

Considering the roster, perhaps it’s an accomplishment that the Jaguars won four games that first year.

“The first year was rough,” Caldwell said. “We weren’t even in games at halftime.”

Last year, they regressed record-wise, but Caldwell points to chunks of games as reasons for optimism.

“We played some good football against good teams — at Baltimore, first half at Philadelphia, first half at Indianapolis, first half at San Diego,” Caldwell said. “We just ran out of gas in some of those games.”

Just because they reduced their point differential from minus-202 to minus-162, increased their sack total from 21 to 45 and found their quarterback of the present and maybe future (Blake Bortles) didn’t mean the Jaguars stood still. If they had, justified criticism would have followed. This was a team that couldn’t score (last) and couldn’t produce interceptions (tied for last).

Bradley admitted failure by axing offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, replacing him with veteran play-caller Greg Olson, who was an assistant with the Jaguars in 2012.

When March rolled around, it was Caldwell’s turn to shake the decks and he added eight potential starters: Tight end Julius Thomas, right tackle Jermey Parnell, center Stefen Wisniewski (signed later in the offseason), defensive end Jared Odrick, linebacker Dan Skuta, cornerback Davon House and free safety Sergio Brown in free agency and running back T.J. Yeldon in the draft’s second round.

“I think with the experience we got last year plus the [new] players, we’ll get into the third and fourth quarters and start to close out some games,” Caldwell said.

Among the position players, only two projected starters (defensive end Andre Branch and middle linebacker Paul Posluszny) pre-date this administration.

“I’m really excited,” Caldwell said. “I’m really excited about the pieces we’ve added. I think our coaching staff has done a nice job and our players have really worked. But it takes everybody. Not only the people in this building, but the people outside the building — the fans and the community.”

No question, the Jaguars have better personnel than the last two years. Now we’ll get to see if Bradley can make his mark.

Bucking a trend

One of Bradley’s underrated quotes last year was: “This game is hard.”

And building is really hard.

Just ask Buffalo, Oakland, Cleveland and St. Louis. Those franchises have longer playoff droughts (15, 12, 12 and 10 years, respectively) than the Jaguars’ current seven-year skid.

What Bradley wants to prevent is the occasional scenario of The Coach Who Replaces The Coach Who Inherited The Mess Finds Success. He and Caldwell were here for the foundation-setting; they want to enjoy the winning results.

“I don’t think we’ve done anything great here, but we’ve been solid and mindful of our approach and calculated in our decisions,” Caldwell said. “There was no quick fix. We’re a very process-oriented organization.

“When it does turn, it will be great.”

It was great for Noll and Neale, but they are the historical outliers.

Noll, after seasons of 1-13 and 5-9, led the Steelers to a 6-8 record in his third year (1971). Starting in 1972, the Steelers made the postseason eight consecutive times.

Neale went 2-8-1 and 2-9-1, but then 5-4-1 in 1943; four years later, his club played in the NFL championship game; his Eagles won the 1948 and 1949 titles.

A big difference compared to the Jaguars’ situation: Draft picks.

Noll’s first three drafts produced 58 players (including future Hall of Famers Joe Greene, Terry Bradshaw, Mel Blount and Jack Ham). Neale had 70 picks to help construct his roster. The Jaguars’ last three drafts have consisted of 25 players (24 remain under contract).

The most recent examples both came from 1974-76: The Giants gave Bill Arnsparger a third season after going 7-21, but he was fired after an 0-7 start. And San Diego’s Tommy Prothro lasted 2 1/2 more years — he went 6-8 in Year 3 and 7-7 in Year 4 before resigning after a 1-3 start.

Bradley would be bucking a huge trend.

What are the chances he can make it work? It depends on what qualifies as "work."

Khan told the Times-Union in January he will not publicly mandate a win total necessary for this regime to stay intact. But an educated guess is at least a 6-10 record (including two wins before the Week 8 bye) would be enough.

Bradley downplayed the importance of a quick start even though opening home games against Carolina and Miami are the most important of his tenure, even more so because the Jaguars play only one game in Jacksonville from Weeks 3-10.

“I never talk about the start; it’s always about the finish,” Bradley said. “The finish is the thing. But [starting better] is important. Everybody wants to start playing at a high level. That’s what’s important to me.”
A kövérrel kijelölt rész a minimális állásmegtartó cél. Minimum 6 W idén, ebből legalább 2 az első 8 meccsen. Bradley első 2 évében 1-15(!!!) volt a mérlegünk...

A posztelemző cikkek közül az utolsó a TEkre fókuszál, amely hosszú idő után gyenge pontból komoly ütőkártyává válhat a Jagsnél idén.
Jaguars at tight end: With Julius Thomas, weakness becomes strength

Mickey Shuler was claimed off waivers … and played 31 snaps a week later in the season opener.
Nic Jacobs was signed off New Orleans’ practice squad … and played 19 snaps and caught a touchdown five days later at San Diego.

And Clay Harbor returned after missing six weeks with a popped calf muscle … and played 61 snaps and had eight catches in the same Chargers game.

Just like right tackle and strong-side linebacker last year, the Jaguars’ tight end position was a revolving door thanks mostly to Marcedes Lewis’ Week 2 ankle sprain that put him on short-term injured reserve.

The Jaguars signed Julius Thomas in March to end the instability.

The Jaguars’ highest-paid player (in terms of salary cap hit) at $10.3 million, Thomas caught 24 touchdown passes the last two years; the Jaguars had 31 total touchdown passes during that span.

Thomas is one of six tight ends on the roster. Thomas and Lewis are locks. Harbor and Jacobs are pretty close to it. If five tight ends are kept, the last spot will be contested by seventh-round pick Ben Koyack and undrafted free agent Connor Hamlett.

But the focus will be on Thomas and rightly so.

Acknowledging that nothing counts during the off-season program, it was still comforting for the Jaguars to see Thomas glide — not lumber — all over the field.

“It was exciting to see him move around out there and compete,” general manager Dave Caldwell said. “He’s been great in the locker room and great on the field. Hopefully that continues and he stays healthy.”

The Jaguars have declared their offense will feature several two-tight end looks, putting Thomas – the “move” (or pass-catching) tight end and Lewis – the “traditional” (more blocker than receiver) tight end – on the field simultaneously.

The goal: Line Thomas up all over the formation to win match-ups and have Lewis fill a variety of roles while lining up in a three-point stance.

“It’s good for us,” offensive coordinator Greg Olson said. “I think they’ll complement each other well.”

Breaking down Thomas’ 12 touchdowns last year, he lined up at right wide receiver (five), right tight end (three), right slot receiver (two) and one apiece at left tight end and left wide receiver.

Lewis is a long way past his last (and only) double-digit touchdown season. Since 10 scores in 2010, he has 10 touchdowns in his last 50 games.

When Thomas signed, it was hard to figure on Lewis returning for a 10th year with the Jaguars, but he re-structured his contract, taking a $4 million pay cut to $3.85 million.

A dynamic once the regular season begins is the play-time distribution for Thomas and Lewis. Last year, Thomas played 61.3 percent of Denver’s snaps last year and Lewis — in the games he was active — played 87.2 percent of the Jaguars’ snaps. Those percentages could flip this year.

Harbor handled the starting duties while Lewis was hurt last year and had a chemistry with quarterback Blake Bortles (25 catches in his first seven games) before playing a reduced role. He’ll back up Thomas.

Jacobs has added significant weight (up to nearly 300 pounds) to become a better blocker and will start camp backing up Lewis.

Jaguars position preview: New look for team's linebackers

Was it just a year ago the Jaguars were relying on Dekoda Watson and Geno Hayes to be their outside linebackers?
Yep, that was the Jaguars’ Plan A heading into training camp 2014.

Watson didn’t pan out and was cut last November.

Hayes professionally gutted out the season in a reduced role and wasn’t re-signed.

When the Jaguars report to camp Thursday, their linebacker corps will have a new look.

A pleasant surprise last year, Telvin Smith is now an every-down player at the weak-side spot.

Out the last 10 games because of a torn chest muscle, Paul Posluszny returns to start in the middle.

And signed in the opening hours of free agency, Dan Skuta is expected to solidify the strong-side position.

The starters are set (and more on them later) and the same for special teams standout LaRoy Reynolds. But then the intrigue presents itself.

The leading candidates for the remaining two spots are Khairi Fortt, Jeremiah George, Thurston Armbrister and John Lotulelei. The long shots are Todd Thomas and Matt Robinson.

“We need to find out about the [reserves],” coach Gus Bradley said. “We have to find a backup [in the middle] — Thurston, Khairi or Jeremiah? A backup [weak-side] — we’ll look at Jeremiah. A backup [strong-side] — LaRoy or it could be Khairi.”

Bradley added for emphasis: “Who’s going to be the backup to [Posluszny] is going to be big.”

The Jaguars view Posluszny as an every-down player, but at age 30 and coming off a major injury, quality depth is needed.

Reynolds and George have experience playing middle linebacker, but Armbrister — who impressed the coaches during the offseason program after signing as undrafted free agent — could be the choice. He will also get a look at the strong-side spot.

At the weak-side spot, all Smith did last year was finish second on the team with 99 tackles, and he started only 10 games. But when he got on the field, he stayed, showing he could stand up against the run, be adequate in coverage and, most importantly, find the football. Smith had one interception, four pass break-ups, two forced fumbles and nine tackles for lost yardage.

A key for the Jaguars will getting solid play from the strong-side spot they re-configured last year and called the “Otto.” The name should have been “Uh-oh.”

Watson was a bust. Reynolds was benched after Week 3. Thomas was OK in that spot for a game but was moved to the middle after Posluszny’s injury. Hayes held down the fort down the stretch.

Enter Skuta, who has 23 starts among his 86 career appearances for Cincinnati and San Francisco and has made 80 tackles and 5.5 sacks.

Skuta started a career-high 11 games last year for the 49ers and had five sacks. The Jaguars feel he can give them equal parts run stoutness and coverage ability and maybe even a little pass rush.

Reynolds led the Jaguars with 10 special teams tackles last year so he’s safe. That leaves the other players to compete for two spots.

“I feel really good about [the starters],” general manager Dave Caldwell said. “It gets interesting [after that] just because you don’t know. We may have a good backup or two and maybe a potential starter. We’ll know by the second or third preseason game if one of those guys can take it and run with it.

Jaguars position preview: Blake Bortles hoping to go from surviving to thriving

The noise about Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles hung around this off-season: His fundamentals regressed, he took too many sacks, he threw too many careless passes, he wasn’t ready to play, blah, blah, blah.

Enough already, people. But don’t listen to us, listen to general manager Dave Caldwell, who took No. 5 with the No.3 pick last year.

“He was just doing things to survive last year,” Caldwell said.

Survive. The key word to describe Bortles 2014.

Thrive. The key word to describe Bortles 2015.

Thirteen-and-a-half games of experience under his felt, Bortles will be The Man when he reports to training camp Monday.

Bortles will be ready to build off last year, confident he has picked up new coordinator Greg Olson’s offense and excited about the kind of new talent surrounding him (chiefly tight end Julius Thomas and running back T.J. Yeldon).

“[Last year] allows me to have a better grasp on things,” Bortles said. “I kind of know how things work and what to expect.”

What Bortles knows: The success and failure of the Jaguars’ offense — last in scoring in 2014 — depends on him … just like every other NFL team.

If Bortles cuts down on the turnovers — like he did in the final six games last year (three interceptions, compared with 14 in his first seven games) – the offense will be more efficient. If he shows expected-to-be-improved awareness in the pocket or while scrambling, the Jaguars will lower their league-leading sack total (71). And with his shoulder rested after, he should be able to go downfield more often – only 12 completions that traveled 20 or more yards last year.

If Bortles makes good decisions, Caldwell is sure he will make plays. And don’t tell him Bortles’ fundamentals are worrisome.

“The whole mechanical flaw thing is overrated,” Caldwell said. “He hurt his foot against Baltimore [in Week 15] and he had shoulder inflammation issues later in the year – just a tired arm. Evaluator X may be watching the film and saying, ‘Oh, he’s dropping the ball.’ But he had to so he could get it where it needed to go. You have to give him credit for that.

“He’s fine tuned it and done a good job. I thought his mechanics were sound coming in – we thought he needed some work and he really did work on them. But the whole thing about him regressing? Nobody who said that was doing any research as to what was going on.”

What went on for Bortles last year was the usual rookie peaks and valleys. Two interceptions for touchdowns against Miami. A two-minute drive to beat the Giants in Week 13. Sacked 55 times. Accounting for 25.7 percent of the Jaguars’ rushing yards (419 of 1,633).

Two days after the season, though, Bortles was semi-back at square one – offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was turfed and quarterbacks coach Frank Scelfo re-assigned, replaced by Olson and position coach Nathaniel Hackett.

On Olson’s resume, dating back to his days at Central Washington, are Jon Kitna, Drew Brees, Jeff Garcia, Marc Bulger, Josh Freeman and Derek Carr. When Bortles left for a break, he was armed with a to-do list and a mandate from Olson.

“There is a lot of responsibility and a lot of accountability on his part to put a lot of time in [during the summer] to try and master the offense,” Olson said.

The Jaguars are counting on Bortles’ progress plus the new talent plus the improvement of the returning players will equal better production from the quarterback spot.

“Like a lot of quarterbacks, [Bortles] should make that big jump,” Caldwell said. “He’s done all of the things in the off-season to put himself in position to have a good year.”

After Bortles, Chad Henne is a reliable back-up and the Jaguars have kept only two quarterbacks on the roster except for injury instances, meaning Stephen Morris and Jeff Tuel are competing for a practice squad spot.

Julius Thomas and Allen Robinson turned heads with their impressive play in offseason practices. Will that duo lead a turnaround for the Jaguars offense in 2015?

Szval szerintem korrekt a draftosztályunk.phylos

1 2 2 Luke Joeckel OT
2 1 33 Jonathan Cyprien S
3 2 64 Dwayne Gratz CB
4 4 101 Ace Sanders WR
5 2 135 Denard Robinson RB
6 1 169 Josh Evans S
7 2 208 Jeremy Harris CB
7 4 210 Demetrius McCray CB

Erick Fisher: bust
Luke Joeckel: eddig bust (ismerjük a szituációt)
Dion Jordan: bust (abszolult out of position játszik szvsz)
Lane Johnson: korrekt a philinél
Ansah: megbízható játékos
Mingo: bust
Austin: bust
Milliner: megabust
Warmack, Fluker: korrektek
D.J. Hajden: sose volt jó.

Ha megnézzük, akkor a top 12-ből lett 4 korrekt játékos, 1, max kettő kérdőjeles, a többi bust. Aki jó az is falban dolgozik.
