És igazad van. Idén már pl. Bradley is elvesztheti az állását, ha úgy alakulnak a dolgok. Pl. a helyi média szerint idén jó jel lenne az előrelépésre, ha pl. az első 8 meccsen nyernénk annyit, mint tavaly összesen. Bortles fejlődése lesz a kulcs. Ha ő egy nagyot tud előre lépni, akkor rendben lehetnek a dolgok.
Igaz Poz azt mondta héten, hogy mivel a D nagy része már 3. éve együtt van ebben a szisztémában, így idén már jó lenne nagyot lépni előre. Kérdés a limitált pass rush és Sen'Derrick korlátozott bevethetősége mennyire veti vissza a védelem fejlődését.

How are Jaguars managing their salary cap? Let's ask an expert

At the end of business Friday, the Jaguars had an NFL-high $34.9 million in available salary cap space, partly because they have $21.8 million in rollover money.
But how are the Jaguars managing the cap under third-year general manager Dave Caldwell?

For cap analysis, we turned to Jimmy Halsell, who has worked for the NFL Management Council, Washington Redskins and Priority Sports and recently launched www.nflcontractmetrics.com. (Halsell’s website provided the Jaguars’ salary cap numbers.)

Through three free agent cycles, what are some of the characteristics of how Caldwell and his staff have constructed contracts?

Halsell: “The contract characteristic that stands out to me is Jacksonville’s adoption of the limited (if at all) use of signing bonuses in their veteran deals. Since 2013, Julius Thomas’ $6 million signing bonus is the largest signing bonus given by Jacksonville on a veteran contract. Tampa Bay has long used this approach and this strategy limits signing bonus proration. By limiting signing bonus proration, you mitigate the club’s vulnerability to dead money in the event of terminating a player. Also, it allows Jacksonville to trade any future guarantee obligations to the acquiring team. In short, this is an approach that greatly protects the club’s downside, but an approach that is not favorable to players from a cash flow standpoint due to the lack of a signing bonus.”

The Jaguars spent heavily in the opening days of free agency. How team-friendly is Thomas’ contract and did the Jaguars overpay for Jared Odrick and Jermey Parnell?

Halsell: “Because Julius Thomas’ salaries in 2015-16 are guaranteed for skill/injury/cap at the time he signed the deal, he is essentially assured of being a Jaguar for the next two seasons, during which he’ll make $21.2 million. By the fifth day after the February 2017 Super Bowl, the Jaguars have to make a decision on whether or not they want Thomas for the 2017-19 seasons at an average of $8.2 million per year over those years with $3 million of that compensation becoming guaranteed. If the Jaguars were to decide not to keep Thomas after the 2016 season, they would save $4.7 million on the cap (Thomas’ 2017 cap number would decrease from $8.3 million to $3.6 million). In short, they’re paying a bit of a premium ($10.6 million per year in 2015-16) in order to get him at a value (assuming continued productivity) in the final three years of the deal.

“In terms of whether or not they overpaid for Odrick and Parnell, as mentioned earlier, the contract structuring philosophy of not including signing bonuses in the deal is usually not embraced by players and their agents. Therefore, in order to get the contract structure that Jacksonville is looking for, they’ve most likely paid slightly more on the total value and average per year of the deal than what the players would have otherwise gotten on the market elsewhere. Not to mention trying to lure them to a club that has not won a ton recently, this typically results in having to pay a little bit of a premium.”

Who are some of the best bargains on the Jaguars’ roster?

Halsell: “The Jaguars have [14] expected contributors, which counts as projected starters, No. 3 receiver and No. 3 cornerback, who are on rookie contracts. Clearly these players represent a significant bargain due to the rookie compensation system. But also, established players Tyson Alualu and Paul Posluszny represent veteran bargains. While Thomas is the second-highest paid tight end in the NFL from a new money/average per year standpoint ($9.2 million), the other three Jaguars who are in the top 10 at their respective positions play spots that don’t pay a lot. Josh Scobee is the fourth-highest paid kicker, Dan Skuta the fifth-highest 4-3 outside linebacker (Huh - Ik.) and Zane Beadles the eight-highest guard. The lucrative positions of quarterback, left tackle and defensive end are filled by value contracts in Jacksonville.”

In the last decade, which teams have handled the salary cap system the best — and worst?

Halsell: “The Jaguars have rolled over $21.8 million in unused cap space — that has been a hallmark of the Philadelphia Eagles’ cap management philosophy for years. The Eagles rolled over $15.7 million from 2014 to this year. Their ability to add surplus salary cap space to this year’s base cap of $143.28 million gave them the ability to go after high-end veteran players like DeMarco Murray and Byron Maxwell. And since there is no cap or maximum on how much you can roll over, those clubs who continue to roll over money year after year put themselves at a distinct advantage over those clubs who operate closer to the base salary cap.

“In terms of clubs that have not managed the cap well, teams never find themselves stressing over being cap compliant. The area that can get clubs in trouble from a cap management standpoint is in guarantee structure. For example in Chicago, I’m sure the Bears would prefer not to have their hands tied with Jay Cutler due to the amount of guaranteed money he has in his deal for this year. I’m sure Tampa Bay would prefer not to have to pay Michael Johnson $7 million this year due to a lack of offset language negotiated into his deal — and he’s making another $6 million as a member of the Bengals. In both cases, the structures were not a function of the club’s negligence, but the function of the players soon having multiple suitors and the club wanting to get a deal done. Guarantee structures can tell you a lot about the level of commitment and risk a team is willing to invest in a player and the Jaguars’ structure that limits the potential for dead money is risk-averse.”

Annyiban nem gáz a dolog, hogy szerintem Davis a 2. legjobb pass rusherünk Clemons mögött(és mivel ő most nem edz, így jelenleg ő a legjobb emberünk ebben a műfajban). Igaz Odrick is eléggé meggyőző pass rusher a TCs visszajelzések alapján.
Bradley a mai sajtótájékoztatón mindenesetre elmondta, hogy tegnap hosszasan beszélgettek Lukekal. De tényleg jó lenne, ha már összekapná magát.

Új sérülés nincs, Nic Jacobs hagyta el kis időre az edzést, de nemsokára visszatért. Clemons még mindig nem edz.

A nap playe Allen Robinsoné volt, aki Nick Marshall után után most Devon House ellen mutatott be egy parádés elkapást. Ryan Davis jobbnak bizonyult Luke Joeckelnél. Beadles jól tartotta magárt Alualuval szemben. Linder nem adott esélyt Odricknak, amikor az DT posztról támadta őt . Andre Branch semmit sem tudott kezdni Jermey Parnellel. Dan Skuta LEO posztból próbálkozott, de sem Joeckel, se a Marcedes- Julius Thomas duóval szemben nem tudott túljutni. Odrick dominált Beadlesszel szemben, sőt az új DLünknek sikerült a kezdő(?) LGnket földbe döngölnie! A centereknek nem volt jó napjuk. Roy Miller Wisniewskit, Abry Jones Bowankot verte meg.
Wisniewski ma egyébként sok snappet kapott a kezdőkkel! A cserék között ma Sam Young RGt játszott, és Pasztor RTt.

Davon Housenak azért elég jó napja volt, 2 passzt is sikerült leütnie.

A tegnap megsérült RT Brennan Williams visszatért és a camp első bunyójában is benne volt a DE Ikponmwosa Igbinosun ellen.

Nick Marshallnak a tegnapi picksixe után volt egy leütött labdája. A végén még ő lesz az 5. CB az 53ban.

Clay Harbor elejtett egy könnyű Stephen Morris passzt. Yeldonnak is volt egy dropja.

* TE Marcedes Lewis ran a skinny post and caught QB Blake Bortles’ pass and then had SS Johnathan Cyprien bounce off him before he ran up the field.

* WR Arrelious Benn made an acrobatic catch on a quick slant route during 7-on-7. With CB Jeremy Harris in good coverage, Benn jumped to get a piece of QB Chad Henne’s pass and then collected it as he fell to the turf.

THUMBS DOWN

* There were five dropped passes during individual drills. The culprits were RB Corey Grant, WR Tandon Doss, RB Denard Robinson, TE Nic Jacobs and WR Allen Robinson.

* On one of the few deep passes thrown, WR Marqise Lee beat Gratz but dropped Henne’s accurate throw.

* RB T.J. Yeldon fumbled on his second carry of 11-on-11. Gratz recovered.

* Lewis almost made a fine downfield catch, getting both hands on Bortles’ pass but losing control as he fell to the turf.

Coach Gus Bradley called a, “clearly personal – all personal,” issue for Clemons and not a dispute about his potentially reduced role as a situational pass rusher.

“I can’t get too much into it; there are some personal things that he’s going through,” Bradley said. “I can tell you this: We’ve been in really good communication with him.”

Clemons missed all of the voluntary OTAs sessions in June before reporting for the mandatory mini-camp.

“If you would ask me if it’s concerning, I would say, ‘Yeah,’” Bradley said. “This one is a little concerning. My hope is we can work through this. I talked to him last night and again this morning. Hopefully we can come up with a decision to speed this up a little quicker. I don’t see this as a situation that’s extended.

“We’re sensitive toward [it being a personal issue], but we also need some urgency.”

Clemons will count against the 90-man roster limit while he is away.

As the Jaguars’ veterans get set to report Thursday and then begin practice Friday, here are some of those answers and more in a training camp primer:

MOST TO GAIN

Receiver Marqise Lee’s roster spot is secure, but in order to be a big part of the passing game, he needs to show a) he’s healthy from a balky knee that kept him out of OTAs/minicamp, b) he has a grasp of the new offense, c) he can make it through an entire camp without an issue and d) can be the Jaguars’ top downfield threat. He will get every opportunity to earn a significant role.

MOST TO LOSE

Defensive end Andre Branch is in the final year of his rookie contract. Will he be a double-digit sack guy who then earns a multi-year contract or will he be a five-sack/dinged-up guy who will have to settle for a series of one-year deals the rest of his career? A good camp will earn him the starting Leo (weak-side defensive end) assignment in the opener.

MOST ANTICIPATED NEWCOMER

Let’s go to the Department of the Obvious — tight end Julius Thomas. The Jaguars’ highest-paid player, Thomas caught 24 touchdown passes from Peyton Manning the last two years. We know Thomas will be heavily targeted by Blake Bortles. Where the intrigue lies is in how offensive coordinator Greg Olson moves him around and how much of that plan is on display during the preseason games.

MOST AWKWARD FIT

When rookie fourth-round pick James Sample returns from a broken forearm (probably mid-August), he’ll not only be transitioning to the pro game, but to a new position. In his lone full season of FBS action — for Louisville — he played more of a strong safety role. Upon being told he was moving to free safety after the draft, even Sample expressed surprise. His injury means Sergio Brown, barring a complete collapse, is the Week 1 starter, but Sample’s play in the final two preseason games merits monitoring.

MOST CROWDED POSITION

Well, the Jaguars list three place-kickers on the roster. But seriously, there are two positional logjams at the back end of the roster: Last receiver and last cornerback. For the receiver spot, it’s someone from the bunch of Tandon Doss, Bryan Walters, Damian Copeland, Tony Washington and Arrelious Benn. Doss is the tepid favorite if he wins the punt returning spot. At the No. 5 corner, the group is Jeremy Harris, Tommie Campbell, Rashaad Reynolds and Nick Marshall. If it’s based on their ability to play corner, the pick would be Harris. But Campbell could make the team as a core special teamer.

MOST LIKELY TO BREAK OUT (DEFENSE)

Cornerback Aaron Colvin got a taste of the NFL last year, making it back from a January 2014 ACL injury to play in the final six games, during which he showed a nose for the football and a willingness to stick his helmet into mix while playing the run. He starts camp as the nickel (slot) cornerback, but if he gets a chance and then shows up playing outside, the Jaguars shouldn’t hesitate making him an every-down player.

MOST LIKELY TO BREAK OUT (OFFENSE)

A case could be made Lee has the most to gain, most to lose and is most likely to breakout. But receiver Allen Robinson is our pick. We’re not guaranteeing 1,000 yards, but it’s not impossible he could reach 75 catches, which would put him on the cusp of 1K.

MOST INTERESTING LONG-SHOT

Benn hasn’t played in a game since 2012 because of multiple injuries and he was a no-risk addition by the Jaguars in January. But Tampa Bay made him a second-round pick in 2010 for a reason and he had five touchdowns in 29 games his first two years. Befitting his unofficial title, it will be interesting to watch Benn run around.

Wednesday: First practice in pads, 9:55 a.m.

Aug. 8: Scrimmage at stadium, 6 p.m.

Aug. 12: Last open practice, 9:55 a.m.

Aug. 14: vs. Pittsburgh, 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 22: at New York Giants, 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 26: vs. Detroit, 8 p.m.

Sept. 1: Roster must be reduced to 75 players.

Sept. 3: at Washington, 7:30 p.m.

Sept. 5: Roster must be reduced to 53 players.

Can the Jaguars significantly increase last year’s league-low scoring average? How much should we see new tight end Julius Thomas in the preseason games? Who starts at left guard?
As the Jaguars’ veterans report to EverBank Field Thursday morning for the start of training camp, Hays Carlyon, Vito Stellino and Ryan O’Halloran weigh in on five topics in a Times-Union beat writers roundtable.

1. Which statistical department — points scored (15.6 per game), interceptions (six, tied for fewest in NFL) or run defense (allowed at least 140 yards in eight games) — are the Jaguars most likely to improve upon this year?

Carlyon: The picks are going to go way up. Why? Because of Aaron Colvin and Telvin Smith. I think this play-making duo will combine for at least six interceptions, equaling or surpassing last year’s team total. I’m also betting on another six from the rest of the secondary and a couple from the front seven.

Stellino: The Jaguars have been the league’s lowest-scoring team two years in a row. They should improve because they have given quarterback Blake Bortles weapons like T.J. Yeldon and Julius Thomas and an improved offensive line to protect him. It will then be up to Bortles to show progress. This year is all about how big a jump Bortles makes; the offense will go as far as he takes it.

O'Halloran: I’ll take the leftovers here and say the rush defense. It was particularly horrid over the first three games of 2014 (145, 199 and 141 yards allowed). Two players will be why the Jaguars should move up from 27th to maybe 20th: The addition of Jared Odrick at the strong-side defensive end spot — he’s more athletic than predecessor Red Bryant. And then a full season of Telvin Smith starting at weak-side linebacker.



2. A lot of outsiders are trying to make left guard an open competition between veteran Zane Beadles and rookie A.J. Cann. Is it a competition? Should it be?

Carlyon: It is a competition and absolutely should be. Beadles hardly dazzled in his first season with the Jaguars. General manager Dave Caldwell didn’t draft Cann in the third round to compete with right guard Brandon Linder. The Jaguars need to be more powerful up front and Cann could upgrade the unit’s strength. Look for Beadles to win the job in camp, but Cann will be starting coming out of the bye week.

Stellino: There won’t be a competition at left guard and shouldn’t be. Beadles is a six-year veteran who has started 78 games, including a Super Bowl. Granted, he struggled last year adjusting to a new system and playing on a makeshift line. He didn’t live up to the inflated contract, but that doesn’t change the fact he’s not going to lose his job to a rookie. Beadles may never be worth what the Jaguars paid him — teams overpay in free agency — but he’s still a starter in his prime.

O’Halloran: Publicly, the Jaguars will say it’s an open competition; privately, they desperately want — and need — Beadles to show up and seize the spot. Look at the team’s explanation after Cann was drafted — best player available, never thought he would be there. I took that to mean, “We’re not giving up on Beadles … at least not this year.”



3. Tight end Julius Thomas is an established play-maker but is working with a new quarterback and in a new offense. How much time in the preseason games should Thomas get?

Carlyon: As much as Blake Bortles. When Bortles exits, Thomas should, too. I would play him roughly six quarters in the four games combined, with half of that in the third contest. Thomas is also relatively young, with 25 regular-season starts to his credit, so he could use the work.

Stellino: Thomas should play the same number of snaps as Bortles. The Jaguars are counting on Thomas so he needs as much work as he can get with Bortles. Thomas also has to learn Bortles isn’t Peyton Manning and has to adjust to his style.

O’Halloran: One quarter in preseason game No. 1 and one quarter in preseason game No. 3 — enough for Thomas to confirm he’s in game shape. And then I’d send him … and T.J. Yeldon … and Allen Robinson … and others on a trip up and down the Florida coast in owner Shad Khan’s yacht with instructions to not return until six days before the Sept. 13 opener against Carolina.



4. Of all the veteran free agent additions, which one — besides Thomas — will make the biggest impact?

Carlyon: Center Stefen Wisniewski. Free agents sometimes stumble learning a new system, but that won’t be a problem for Wisniewski, who was with offensive coordinator Greg Olson the last two years in Oakland. Wisniewski helped keep Derek Carr upright last season under heavy blitzing. That’s exactly what the Jaguars must accomplish to help Bortles succeed. Wisniewski is an intelligent player with experience (61 starts) who will greatly help in pass-protection calls.

Stellino: There’s a reason defensive end Jared Odrick’s five-year deal was worth almost as much as the one Julius Thomas got — $42.5 million to Thomas’ $46 million. Odrick is being counted on to be as big an addition on defense as Thomas is on offense. Odrick is a big upgrade over Red Bryant.

O’Halloran: Call me crazy but I think linebacker Dan Skuta is going to do a little bit of everything that will add up to him having a big impact. He’ll be physical in the run game. He’ll be decent in coverage. And he’ll even pressure the quarterback a little bit.



5. Which rookies who are below-the-radar deserve a closer look once the pads go on next week?

Carlyon: I have a feeling about linebacker Thurston Armbrister. The Jaguars uncovered an undrafted gem out of Miami last season in receiver Allen Hurns. Armbrister could be next in line. He has a golden opportunity with the lack of depth at the position.

Stellino: A pair of undrafted rookies from Auburn — Corey Grant and Nick Marshall — deserve a close look in camp. Grant wasn’t invited to the combine because of his size. The Jaguars list him at 5-feet-11 and 205 pounds although he was listed at 5-9/201 at Auburn. But he does have blazing speed and ran in the 4.3 range at his Pro Day. That speed should make him valuable as a change-of-pace runner and special teams player. Marshall was Auburn’s quarterback, but the Jaguars are going to try him at cornerback. It’s always difficult to switch positions, but Marshall is very athletic and may have a shot at it.

O’Halloran: Last year at this time, I wouldn’t have given left tackle Josh Wells a snowball’s-chance-in-Jacksonville that he’d make the roster. But he did. So let’s look at another undrafted offensive lineman. Chris Reed played at Division II Minnesota State but has athleticism, evident by his shot-putting prowess. I’ll be watching him because it’s always interesting to see how a small-school guy handles the NFL competition.
