Srácok, lesz valamilyen közös draftnézés a fórumozók/jax fanok számára?

Most recently on their podcast, ESPN's Mel Kiper and Todd McShay also mentioned they've heard the Jaguars would like to trade down from the No. 5 spot.

Storm Johnson 2 évre aláírt a Tampával.

Jack, Bosa
Bosa, Ramsey

The Jaguars’ 58 wins over the last decade rank 28th in the NFL.

But what are the primary reasons? Instability at quarterback. Woeful free-agent signings. Lousy luck. Sub-par coaching.

And perhaps most of all, dreadful drafting.

Ah, the draft. Say “Jaguars” and “draft” in the same sentence and the team’s fans are likely to wince, curse, sigh, and groan — in that order.

We wanted to see just how poorly the Jaguars have performed compared to the rest of the league.

The Times-Union examined the last 10 drafts and broke the data down into four team-by-team categories: Total picks, games started by those picks, picks who failed to start a game for their team, and players who reached the Pro Bowl for their team.

The Jaguars rank below the league average in three of the four categories.

The Jaguars are tied for 25th in total picks (73; the league average is 79.6); 20th in draft-pick starts (1,300; 1,316.4); tied for 19th in no-start picks (26; 29.6); and tied for last in draft picks who made the Pro Bowl (three, 6.3).

(Full team-by-team data at end of this story.)

The Jaguars will continue to try to reverse that starting with Thursday night’s first round. They pick fifth overall and have eight selections.

The research did confirm one positive: The Jaguars’ 2014 draft was one of the NFL’s best that year. Those nine players have combined to start 134 games, tied with Oakland for most in the NFL from that draft season. The Jaguars’ class includes quarterback Blake Bortles, receiver Allen Robinson, guard Brandon Linder and linebacker Telvin Smith.

The Jaguars’ 2013 class, while disappointing in terms of foundation players, has combined to start 172 games, most in the league.

But too many misses from 2006-12 put the Jaguars in a competitive hole they’re still trying to crawl out of.

Few impact players have been found

Drafting and developing Pro Bowl players doesn’t automatically equal playoff success.

Minnesota leads with 12 drafted Pro Bowlers since 2006 (combined 18 appearances), led by running back Adrian Peterson. But the Vikings have won only one playoff game during that span.

Kansas City has drafted 11 Pro Bowl players who have made a combined 25 appearances, but have also been limited to one playoff win. Safety Eric Berry, defensive lineman Tamba Hali, pass rusher Justin Houston and running back Jamaal Charles are among the big hits.

And Dallas has 10 drafted Pro Bowl players (16 appearances) but has won only two playoff games during the last 10 years. Receiver Dez Bryant, center Travis Frederick, left tackle Tyron Smith and right tackle Zack Martin lead the way. (The Cowboys also had one of the worst draft classes since 2006 — their 12-player class in 2009 combined to make only 23 starts.)

The league’s current blue-bloods, though, have been aided by the draft.

Carolina is fifth with nine Pro Bowl players and tied with eight is New England, Denver, Seattle, New Orleans, Cincinnati and San Francisco.

The Jaguars must draft more high-end players to become successful.

Since 2006, their only Pro Bowl draft picks have been Robinson, running back Maurice Jones-Drew and tight end Marcedes Lewis.

Only 4.1 percent of the Jaguars’ draft picks since 2006 have been named to the Pro Bowl compared with 14.6 percent for Minnesota.

The Jaguars’ three players and five appearances are tied with Indianapolis, Los Angeles and the New York Giants for last in the NFL, well below the league averages of 6.3 Pro Bowlers and 13.4 appearances.

Saving the Colts and Giants was drafting Peyton and Eli Manning in 1998 and 2004, respectively. The Rams’ 50 wins since 2006 are tied with Oakland for fewest in the NFL.

Disastrous dry spell for several years

It would be hard to draft as poorly as the Jaguars did from 2006-12, the first three years headed by James Harris and the following four directed by Gene Smith.

■ They had a full set of picks (at least seven) in just two drafts (11 in 2007 and nine in 2009), the result of poor trades.

■ Reaching the Pro Bowl from the 2006 class were Lewis (once) and Jones-Drew (twice). But no Jaguars draft pick in the next seven drafts made one Pro Bowl for them — the only franchise to have that dishonor.

■ Twenty of the 48 picks (41.7 percent) didn’t start a game for the Jaguars. They drafted two punters during this span – Adam Podlesh (2007) and Bryan Anger (2012), but they didn’t start a game.

■ Three of the classes (2008 and 2011-12) combined to start fewer than 100 games for the Jaguars. The five-man 2008 class started only 39 games, the 2011 group only 95 games and the 2012 class just 32 games.

After the 2012 season, Smith was fired and replaced by Dave Caldwell.

Caldwell’s first three classes have totaled 25 picks and started a combined 333 games, an average of 13.3 per player, slightly behind Smith’s rate of 18.2. But Caldwell has at least found a quarterback (Bortles).

How best in the NFL were built

Last year’s four conference finalists — Denver and New England in the AFC and Carolina and Arizona in the NFC — were examined. Of the four, only the Patriots were led by the same personnel chief (Bill Belichick) for the last decade.

Since 2006, the Patriots have the most picks (94), but the fewest starts by their draft picks (1,040) and the second-most picks that didn’t start a game for them (46). But those selections have combined for 20 Pro Bowl appearances, the third-most although nine are by kicker Stephen Gostkowski and special teams star Matthew Slater.

New England’s pick total was inflated because of compensatory picks awarded to it for lost free agents. Those picks can’t be traded (they can be starting next year).

Denver’s 77 picks are tied for 21st-most and 1,309 starts is 19th. Twenty-eight Broncos picks haven’t started a game for them (tied for 13th-most) and eight picks have reached the Pro Bowl for a combined 19 appearances.

The Broncos have drafted quarterback Jay Cutler, receiver Brandon Marshall, left tackle Ryan Clady, tight end Julius Thomas, receiver Demaryius Thomas and pass rushers Von Miller and Elvis Dumervil in the last decade. Only Miller and Demaryius Thomas remain with the team.

Carolina’s 73 picks are tied for 25th-most, its 1,397 starts are 12th-most, it has 25 picks with no starts (tied for 22nd-most) and the drafts have produced nine Pro Bowlers for a combined 19 appearances.

The Panthers are interesting because former general manager Marty Hurney was responsible for drafting quarterback Cam Newton, linebacker Luke Kuechly, cornerback Josh Norman, running back Jonathan Stewart and center Ryan Kalil but was fired after the 2012 season, mostly due to salary cap problems.

Arizona’s 72 picks are fourth-fewest and the 1,214 starts are 25th-most, its 20 picks who didn’t start a game are the fewest and the six produced Pro Bowlers are tied for 15th (13 appearances).

The Cardinals have drafted defensive tackle Calais Campbell, cornerback Patrick Peterson and safety Tyrann Mathieu.

Only when the Jaguars’ drafts began producing Pro Bowl-level performers in line with those four teams will they enter playoff contention.

It isn’t hard to spot the gleam in Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley’s eyes when UCLA outside linebacker Myles Jack’s name is mentioned.

The true junior has dazzled scouts with his athleticism on film. The Jaguars brass looks to be enamored as well with Jack’s ability to bring a unique combination of coverage and rush skills to a defense woeful on third down last season.

The Jaguars conducted their draft luncheon on Friday at EverBank Field and Caldwell and Bradley took dozens of questions about several players that could be options for the Jaguars with the fifth-overall pick in Thursday’s first round.

However, their responses to Jack (and body language) stood out.

Caldwell and Bradley traveled to UCLA to work Jack out privately on April 16. Jack’s final season ended in the third game when he injured his right knee. The true junior did not participate in the NFL Scouting Combine or at UCLA’s pro day, but is seven months removed from the injury.

“We’ve always scheduled that we would do it privately,” Caldwell said. “He looked good. We put him through linebacker drills, change of direction, drops, bag drills.”

Bradley was impressed with Jack, especially considering the fatigue he’s under from the draft process. Elite prospects travel to several teams for visits and conduct private workouts at home in addition to their training. Jack visited EverBank Field on April 5.

“I had a chance to visit with him for quite a while [at UCLA],” Bradley said. “We had some time here and then some time there, so that part was good. Then, we put him through position-specific drills that are really based on our scheme and I thought he did a really good job with that. He’s travelled a lot, so I was really impressed with him.”

Jack, who doesn’t turn 21 until September, started 28 games for the Bruins, recording 178 tackles with four interceptions and 23 pass breakups.

The feeling from several reporters after the event was that Jack is their man.
Igaz a múlt heti UCLAs túra elég komoly ellenérv erre.

Caldwell Normanről:
"There is a continuing interest...we do our due diligence. We do our homework.

Caldwell on Bosa: “He can fit in any defense — he could do either [the strong-side or weak-side end spots]. He can [be an interior pass rusher], too. You want to be careful – you want to settle him into one spot and get him comfortable doing that first [before moving him around].”

Caldwell on Jack: “He’s a rare athlete. Rare explosion. Great kid. Smart football player. Three-down player. We’ve talked about [strong-side linebacker]. He’s going to definitely be on the field as a rookie in nickel, which is 65 percent of the snaps. … He’s really good in coverage, but he has the skill set to be a blitzer.”
