Jimmy reakciója:
"I’m extremely grateful and extremely thankful of being inducted into the Pride,” Smith said on a media conference call. “I’m definitely proud and emotional right now. It’s been a long time coming, I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, but I’ve persevered.”

"The timing is perfect," he said. "Had I not gone through some of the off-the-field issues, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I definitely matured and learned from my mistakes and help other guys who are struggling with things."

“I would also like to thank Coach [Tom] Coughlin for being a second father to me and helping me through those tough days,” Smith said. “I’d like to thank my boy Keenan [McCardell], thank Mark Brunell, thank Fred Taylor, Tony Boselli and the Weavers and the entire Jags Nation.”

Jaguars coordinator Todd Wash ready to get defense rolling

Even those who had known him for two decades were shell-shocked in January when Todd Wash held his first staff meeting as the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator.

The task was a complete analysis of a system that lacked precision and big plays last year, failing to match the improvement on offense during a 5-11 season.

The first morning, Wash put on a 48-play video of a defense the Jaguars called in 2015. They broke for lunch 41/2 hours later after covering the first seven plays.

Yes, one play every 38.6 minutes — enough time to get halfway through a Donald Trump speech.

“I would joke, ‘We’re the most inefficient guys ever watching tape,’ ” assistant linebackers coach Scottie Hazelton says. “One day from 1-4:30 [p.m.], we got on a roll and did 16 plays. But there was a point to what he was doing.”

The point was clear.

Promoted from defensive line coach by Gus Bradley, Wash wanted to instantly create a new standard. Letting things like communication errors slide was unacceptable. Same for a player lining up in the wrong spot. Ditto for being unable to make a pre-snap adjustment. That meant marathon meetings. Every play merited a front-to-back analysis of what happened (even the good plays).

“I expect everything to be detailed — there’s no fudging in that area,” Wash says. “If we do the little things, we should be ready.”

Bradley believes Wash, whom he has known since 1987 and worked with at two colleges and three NFL teams, is the guy to get the Jaguars ready for Aaron Rodgers, Philip Rivers, Joe Flacco and Andrew Luck — in the first four weeks.

Just like last year’s decision to hire Greg Olson turned around the offense, Bradley is hoping Wash has the same impact, so he turned to his most-trusted ally.

Wash is the opposite of Bob Babich, the Jaguars’ coordinator from 2013-15. Tattoos cover his arms. He more than occasionally curses during an interview. He isn’t afraid to single out a player’s mistakes in front of the whole defense. And on Sundays this fall, every player and coach expects Wash to be an aggressive play-caller, dialing up more blitzes and playing more man coverage.

“He’s going to lean more to finding ways to getting pressure on the quarterback,” Bradley says.

Much is at stake. The Jaguars enter Year 4 of their massive build knowing owner Shad Khan’s patience will eventually run out. Another losing season and there will likely be staff changes. To win more games, the defense has to improve from last year’s rankings of 29th in passing yards allowed, 31st on third down and 31st in points allowed.

TWO-DAY NFL CAREER

Wash grew up in New Town, N.D., (pop. 2,363, according to the 2013 census) located on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, 100 miles east of Montana and 88 miles south of Canada. His high school graduation class was 32 students.

Wash played quarterback and free safety at New Town and was recruited by Montana State and North Dakota State.

He chose to stay in-state and play for the Bison, a Division II program that had won national championships in 1983 and 1985-86 and projected him as an effective pass rusher after a few years in the weight room. His coach was Rocky Hager, and upon arrival on campus in Fargo, he also met Bradley, who was two years ahead of him.

“When he first came in, you could see his athleticism — he could have easily been a tight end,” Bradley says.

In Wash’s four-year college playing career, the Bison went 43-6-1, including 14-0 national championship years in 1988 and 1990, his freshman and junior seasons. He finished with 22 sacks (now eighth in school history), including six sacks in the second national title-game victory, 51-11 over Indiana (Pa.).

“Exceptionally intense competitor,” says Hager, now the interim coach at the College of New Jersey. “He had the ability as an edge rusher to knock the other guy off-balance and get to the quarterback.”

Also at NDSU, Wash met Darci Steere when he was a senior and she was a freshman on the women’s basketball team. She played on three national championship teams and was inducted to the Bison Athletic Hall of Fame in 2012. They have three children — Alyssa (sophomore at St. Leo University), Jenae (junior at Bartram Trail High School) and Marcus (a fifth-grader). Darci says during her sophomore year, she took Hager’s “Methods of Coaching Football,” class to get ready for being a Football Wife.

“I didn’t know the ins and outs of the terminology, and I kind of knew [Todd and I] would end up together so I thought I should figure it out,” Darci says.

Wash played through knee, thumb and shoulder injuries at NDSU, which compromised his professional hopes. He signed with the Houston Oilers.

“I practiced two days, fell wrong on my shoulder and flunked my physical,” Wash says. “I went over to Europe and played a whole season and said, ‘This isn’t for me.’”

Coaching was for Wash.

YOUNG HEAD COACH

Wash was a student assistant and graduate assistant at North Dakota State before he followed Bradley to Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo. After the 1995 season, Bradley was promoted to head coach and Wash to defensive coordinator.

But four months later, during spring practice, Bradley returned to NDSU as linebackers coach. Wash was named head coach. He was 28 years old.

“It was over my head, and I was no more ready for that than the man on the moon,” Wash says. “But somebody had faith in me or nobody else applied, one or the other.”

Hazelton was on Wash’s Fort Lewis staff.

“Fort Lewis was great for all of us because it taught us how to work because we had to do so many different things,” Hazelton says. “We would go in and pull the wooden benches out of the locker room and then sand them down and paint them ourselves just to make the locker room look nicer. And Washer was right there with us — he didn’t need to be doing that stuff as the head coach. But he’s just a worker.”

Wash was Fort Lewis’ head coach for four years — his first team went 5-5, the program’s first non-losing season in 11 years. After years of 4-7, 0-10, 2-9, Wash resigned to join conference rival Nebraska-Kearney as defensive coordinator.

In 2002, Wash returned to North Dakota State, hired by Babich. After two years, Babich resigned to join the St. Louis Rams and new coach Craig Bohl kept Bradley (although he demoted him from coordinator to linebackers coach) but did not retain Wash, who was the line coach.

“That stung. It really did,” Wash says. “And the timing of it was really late — there weren’t a lot of things out there at the time. But Craig said if he ever had an opening, he would bring me back. I thought that was the biggest crock of [garbage]. But when he did, he brought me back.”

Wash spent one year at Missouri Southern (2004) and then rejoined the Bison staff for two years (2005-06). After the 2005 season, Bradley left to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A year later, he recommended Wash to defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.

NFL ARRIVAL

Just like the NFL was never on Bradley’s radar until he joined the Buccaneers, the same goes for Wash. His goal was to become a Division I defensive coordinator. Kiffin, now a Jaguars senior assistant, created an opening when he promoted Bradley from quality control to linebackers coach.

“I said, ‘Hey, Kiff, there’s a great coach up at North Dakota State. He’s really into ball. I think you’d really like him,’” Bradley says. “He brought Washer in, was very impressed and hired him on the spot.”

Says Wash: “Somehow, I got the job. I was intimidated walking into a room with Kevin Carter, Chris Hovan, Simeon Rice, Greg Spires. I was like, ‘Holy [bleep], small-town kid from North Dakota, what the [heck] am I doing here?’ But football is football. You can either coach or you can’t.”

Wash was the quality control coach for Tampa Bay in 2007-08; in January 2009, coach Jon Gruden was stunningly fired (days earlier, Bradley was hired as Seattle’s defensive coordinator). Wash had two years left on his contract.

“I remember driving down the street, and it came across the radio that Jon had been let go,” Wash says. “My phone blew up, and the second call was Raheem [Morris], and all he said, ‘You’re fine. I’ll call you tomorrow.’ That was a load off knowing I was being retained.”

The Buccaneers promoted Morris from defensive backs coach to head coach. Wash was defensive line coach and current Jaguars offensive play-caller Olson remained the quarterbacks coach but was soon moved up to offensive coordinator.

It was during his time in Tampa Bay that Wash’s knowledge of the linebacker and defensive back groups became evident to Hager when he observed an offseason workout.

“He was the D-line coach, but in the video sessions and talking about the defense, he knew what was going on with the ends, the tackles, the linebackers, the free safety, the strong safety, the cornerbacks — he knew the total package,” Hager says. “The players know it matters to him, and they’re important to him.”

After the 2010 season, Wash had contract offers on his desk from Tampa Bay and Seattle. He chose to become the Seahawks’ line coach and rejoin Bradley.

“I wanted to be on the winning side of things,” Wash says. “Obviously, the icing on the cake was working with Gus again — I knew what kind of defensive line he wanted and how to coach with him and how to deal with him. It was just a great fit and a great opportunity with Pete [Carroll].”

The Seahawks posted 69 sacks in Wash’s two years. In January 2013, Bradley was hired by the Jaguars, and Wash joined him after Carroll released him from his contract. A year after Bradley and Wash left, Seattle won the Super Bowl, and current and former Seahawks credit both men with spearheading the rebuild.

PROMOTED … FOLLOWING SEARCH

Before last year, Wash added the title of run-game coordinator, and the Jaguars improved from 27th to 15th in that category and exposed the linebackers and secondary to Wash’s meeting-room presence.

Two days after the season, Babich was fired. The natural transition would have been to promote Wash because Bradley believed the right system was in place and an big philosophical overhaul wasn’t the antidote.

But he still brought in outside candidates, including former Detroit coach Jim Schwartz and Atlanta secondary coach Marquand Manuel, and had Wash sit in on the interviews, a process he admits was “really different.”

Wash was locked in as the defensive line coach so he experienced — or endured — the unorthodox search with job security.

“He was in a win-win situation,” Darci Wash says. “He had a great thing going as the defensive line coach, but he was waiting in the wings as well. It was next on his list of goals.”

The goal was achieved when Todd was officially promoted Jan. 21.

“I was so incredibly proud and happy for him,” Darci says. “I think he’s more than ready, and I’m not just saying that. I see all of the hard work he’s done and how much passion he has.”

Todd was more blunt: “I was as happy as a pig in [bleep]. … And then it was time to make sure we all got on the same page.”

That mission started with marathon meetings with the defensive staff. The players returned in late April and responded, asking for critical reviews during post-practice video sessions.

“He’s a strong personality, and when you have a strong personality in a position like his, it can motivate people,” defensive end Jared Odrick says. “[Wash] has a strong presence and guys responded to him right away.”

Wash, who will continue to coach the linemen, isn’t in this to be one-and-done as a coordinator. He spent too much time in Durango, Kearney and Fargo through the years to reach this stage and not be successful.

Wash has more talent at his disposal than Babich did — the opening-day defense will have new starters in Malik Jackson, Jalen Ramsey, Tashaun Gipson and Dante Fowler plus Myles Jack and Prince Amukamara.

“I don’t get caught up in [the speculation] and I never have,” he says. “We’re going to come in and do the best possible job we can.

“We’re going to have a chance because we have good players.”
Remélem ő majd sikerrel jár a védelem gatyába rázását illetően. És remélem év közben elereszt egy két F-bombát a sajtótájékoztatók során 😊 😊 😊

Caldwell a Hardy látogatásáról és egyéb témákról.
Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said Monday the team hasn’t ruled out signing free agent defensive end Greg Hardy, but that a move isn’t “imminent.”

Hardy visited Jacksonville last Wednesday and Thursday. He met with Caldwell, coach Gus Bradley and defensive coordinator Todd Wash and was also put through an on-field workout. It is the first documented team visit for Hardy since he became a free agent in March and Dallas announced it was not re-signing him.

“It was an opportunity for us,” Caldwell said as the Jaguars opened training camp with the quarterbacks and rookies reporting to EverBank Field. “Here was a guy who was a franchise defensive end and was on the street. We tried to find out the facts of where he’s at, the truth behind things, everything that surrounds him and just do our homework.

“It’s not often you get to work out a player of that caliber. We have no imminent plans of signing him at this point. But it was good to get him in and find out about him.”

Hardy, who turns 28 on Thursday, has 40 sacks in 75 games for Carolina and Dallas.

Asked if he was comfortable enough with Hardy that the Jaguars would possibly sign him after the regular season started, Caldwell said: “I’ll reserve commenting on that just because he’s a free agent right now and I don’t want to get into specifics of where we’re at with that.”

Caldwell presented a hypothetical as a reason why they hosted Hardy: The Jaguars could need a defensive lineman in the middle of the season – they could negotiate with Hardy knowing their background work was already completed.

The fan feedback on social media last week was largely negative toward the Jaguars pursing Hardy, who sat out 15 games in 2014 while on the commissioner’s exempt list following a domestic violence incident against a former girlfriend. Found guilty in a bench trial, Hardy appealed to request a jury trial, which never happened when the accuser declined to cooperate with prosecutors. Hardy was suspended the first four games last year for violating the league’s player conduct policy. He had six sacks in 12 games for the Cowboys.

“Domestic violence is a serious issue and there’s no place for it in the world let along the NFL,” Caldwell said. “We’re going to turn over every rook, but not at any price.”

Caldwell said the Jaguars’ interest in Hardy – however tepid or serious it is – isn’t a signal they feel the pass-rush needs to be addressed. The top two projected pass rushers – Dante Fowler and Yannick Ngakoue – have played no NFL games. Plus, Hardy would have projected as a strong-side defensive end (opposite Fowler) and an interior third-down pass rusher.

“We like the skill sets of our two young guys,” Caldwell said. “Obviously, you would like some experience but we feel really good about Dante and Yannick and our veterans.”

Besides Hardy, Caldwell addressed several other topics during his briefing:

*Caldwell called running back Denard Robinson, whose car rolled into a Jacksonville retention pond earlier this month (he was later cited for careless driving, but did pass a field sobriety test), “a class act. My understanding is that the police officers did everything that they were supposed to do. Denard didn’t do anything wrong except for being out [late] when he shouldn’t have been out. I think that it’s a cautionary tale for a lot of our guys that, at 3 or 4 in the morning, you leave yourself vulnerable for things to happen.”

As for linebacker Dan Skuta, who was arrested last month in Orlando but never charged with misdemeanor assault, Caldwell said: “As far as Dan and Denard go, there are probably not two guys in our locker room that take care of their business as well as those guys do. They’re both high character guys.”

*The Jaguars anticipate left tackle Kelvin Beachum (knee), cornerback Jalen Ramsey (knee) and defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks (triceps) to be cleared for practice once they take their physicals. The only current candidates for the physically unable to perform list defensive end Jonathan Woodard (Achilles) and offensive lineman Luke Bowanko (hip).

*Asked what his biggest concern entering camp is, Caldwell said: “I think it’s for us to stay healthy. If we can stay healthy and go into the season with a full squad, I think we’ll have a chance at this.”

Az 5 legfontosabb kérdés, amire a training campnek és az előszezonnak választ kéne adnia

LEFT TACKLE CLARITY

What’s the story: The Jaguars will enter camp without a declared starting left side of their offensive line. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson wants to waste little time getting it established (definitely by the Cincinnati game and maybe even the Tampa Bay game). Kelvin Beachum, signed to play left tackle, missed the offseason completing his recovery from a torn ACL last October with Pittsburgh. If he doesn’t sustain a setback, it will be shocking if he wasn’t the starter for Week 1. But besides his health, Beachum also has to show he has a grasp of the system and is well-conditioned. He will not start camp on the physically unable to perform list.

Caldwell says: “From my understanding, in the position room and the offensive meetings, he’s on top of every detail.”

Bradley says: “He should be good [to go] at the start of training camp. He may have to be monitored a little bit, like instead of three practices in a row, maybe two out of three.”

Bradley says: “He should be good [to go] at the start of training camp. He may have to be monitored a little bit, like instead of three practices in a row, maybe two out of three.”

BORTLES’ PROGRESS

What’s the story: Quarterback Blake Bortles improved his touchdown pass total from 11 (2014) to 35 (2015), which was tied for second in the NFL. His interception total increased from 17 to a league-high 18 (albeit with 131 more attempts). The Jaguars’ coaches long ago accepted Bortles won’t have the cleanest practices and that’s fine. What they want to see out of him in his preseason game work is more accuracy on short-to-intermediate passes and improved decision making.

Caldwell says: “Very good quarterbacks who are highly competitive are going to throw interceptions. I’ve used this story before — I’m up there watching the game with a bird’s-eye view and am saying, ‘Throw it away, throw it away, no, no, no,’ and then it’s an 80-yard touchdown pass to Allen Hurns [against Indianapolis]. You hope the good ones outweigh the bad ones. He’s going to have interceptions like all quarterbacks do and he’ll probably have some because he’s just being so competitive.”

Bradley says: “For him, the big thing is consistency. Take chances, but take calculated chances. That just comes with the more and more you play.”

CAN LEE HELP?

What’s the story: Receiver Marqise Lee was on the Jaguars’ All-Spring team after he missed no time with injuries and made multiple explosive plays. But the organization will be literally and figuratively rapping their knuckles on wood during training camp to see if Lee (52 catches in 23 career games) can equal parts stay available and bring a home-run dimension to a passing game that was 10th in the league last year (256.8 yards per game).

Caldwell says: “[Looked] pretty good. It takes the receivers a couple of years sometimes to do it. We got spoiled by the success of [Robinson and Hurns], but it does take time.”

Bradley says: “You go into it cautiously optimistic. You’re seeing Marqise do things. I’ve seen his mindset and he has me very intrigued again, the way he’s handled things and the way he’s competed. I’m very interested to see how he goes through training camp. Will it continue or will it take him time to get back to the mindset he had [in the offseason]? My hope is that he continues.”

RAMSEY’S DUAL ROLE

What’s the story: Ramsey sustained a meniscus (right knee) injury that required surgery May 24, ending his offseason two-plus weeks after he was drafted fifth overall. But Ramsey is expected to ready this week to participate. Bradley said Ramsey will play outside in the base defense, but will move inside to learn the nickel position in practice, which the Jaguars will need during Aaron Colvin’s season-opening four-game suspension.

Caldwell says: “I think playing both is doable. Colvin did it in his rookie year [in 2014] and he missed the first 10 games of the season [with a knee injury]. Jalen is really intelligent so I don’t think it will be an issue.”

Bradley says: “We feel he needs to be in the mix for the [nickel] spot. I wish we would have had him the whole time, but he was engaged when he was watching from the sideline. The [outside] corner part is more playing the position [physically] and the nickel is much more mental and reactionary. That would be the transition for him. “

JACK PLAYS CATCH UP

What’s the story: Another player the Jaguars didn’t see a lot of during the offseason workouts was Jack, the team’s second round pick. But it wasn’t because of injury — UCLA’s class schedule limited his participation to the rookie orientation (May 6-7) and the mandatory minicamp (June 14-15). Don’t pencil Jack into the starting lineup — he’ll be learning the middle linebacker spot and is expected to be a part of the third-down sub package (five defensive backs and two linebackers), but he’ll be a fascinating watch during camp.

Caldwell says: “For Myles, it’s just to get the defense down to where he’s not thinking. You saw just from Day 1 to Day 2 [of minicamp] how quicker he was triggering and feeling more comfortable.”

Bradley says: “Let’s see how he does. Obviously, he’s talented physically and it’s how fast he can pick things up. He’ll have a lot on his plate, whether it’s in nickel situations or first and second downs. We’ll keep an open mind. He just needs to get on the field.”

Hát, azért a DE-knél voltak jobban teljesítő posztok is ott.
Wyatt
Ráadásul idén az első 4 meccsen elég durva lesz az ellenfeleknél a QB felhozatal: Rodgers, Rivers (aki az elmúlt 3 évben 3-szor is porig alázta Gus védelmét, ráadásul idegenbe megyünk San Diegoba), Flacco és Luck az első 4 ellenfél idén, utánuk meg a Cutler, Carr, Mariota, Alex Smith kvartett következik. Elég "gyengus" névsor...

Én (is) elég sokat várok Todd Washtól.

Kíváncsi vagyok végül bevállaljuk-e a leigazolását.

Jaguars Position Preview: Tight ends

Just about the entire foundation tight end Julius Thomas built on the Jaguars’ practice field last offseason crumbled on his first — and only — catch of the preseason, which ended with a broken hand.

Thomas missed the first four games and essentially started over upon his debut in mid-October.

The Jaguars are counting on a more seamless August for Thomas, who again looked dominant in the May and June workouts.

“Outstanding spring,” tight ends coach Ron Middleton said. “He looked like he did last year before he got hurt.”

What the Jaguars need is for Thomas to produce at the level he did for Denver in 2013-14. Over the last three years, his 29 touchdown catches are the most among NFL tight ends.

After Thomas and Marcedes Lewis, the competition begins. Nic Jacobs, Ben Koyack, Neal Sterling and Braedon Bowman will be vying for two and maybe three spots. Only Jacobs has caught a professional pass (six).

The key player is, obviously, Thomas. Lost during the inaccurate national discussion about Thomas having a down 2015 was he had more catches (43 to 46) and his five touchdowns included four straight games with a score.

“Julius’ confidence is sky high — he’s healthy and he’s moving well,” Middleton said.

Lewis is the Jaguars’ longest-tenured current player, entering his 11th year after re-signing in March. His 16 catches last year were his fewest since 13 as a rookie in 2006 and he failed to score a touchdown for only the second year in his career (2011).

Middleton, though, called Lewis’ return “huge” for the Jaguars because they feel he is still an effective blocker in the run and pass games.

“When we don’t have Marcedes on the field, we’re a different offense,” Middleton said. “His stats might not be what they were before, but the things he can do for our offense are invaluable. He likes to play the game the way it’s supposed to be played.”

Jacobs seems a pretty safe bet to make the team as Lewis’ back-up, more of a blocking than receiving tight end. Jacobs missed the last month of the offseason with a broken finger.

“He missed a lot of work this spring, but he maintained his weight and he was into it mentally [watching practice] and not drifting off,” Middleton said. “He may have gotten a little more understanding of things. He’s a physical blocker. We’ll definitely continue to see that.”

Koyack, a seventh-round pick in 2015, spent last year on the practice squad. He had 30 catches in his final season at Notre Dame.

“Ben was somebody who really benefited from being on the practice squad – he competed every day and he got better,” Middleton said. “He has a lot to learn, but he took major steps in figuring it out. It will help the offense tremendously if he can be a guy who can do some of the things from a physical standpoint that Clay Harbor did for us last year.”

Sterling and Bowman are also in the mix for the Harbor role, which will include regularly running routes but also be leaned on to block in two-tight end personnel. Harbor signed with New England in free agency.

Sterling, a seventh-round pick in 2015 who played in nine games last year, moved from receiver during the offseason.

“From the passing game aspect, he’s above [the other back-ups],” Middleton said. “But we’re asking him to do things he’s never done before — teaching him to get in a three-point stance was progress. But he hasn’t shied away from anything and he’s definitely got better. He’s going to work at it.”

Bowman, an undrafted free agent from South Alabama, flashed throughout the offseason program with impressive catches. But like a lot of rookies, it’s about the blocking — can he provide just enough to be kept on the roster?

“Bo has something to him,” Middleton said. “He’s athletic, he can run, he can catch really well and he has learned the offense adequately. I can’t wait to see him put the pads on. He has to learn not to make the same mistake.”

Greg Hardy a Jaguarsnál vizitált, de mint minden FA DE idén, ő is szerződés nélkül távozott.

The Jaguars hosted free agent defensive end Greg Hardy at EverBank Field Thursday, but he left without signing a contract.

A league source said “nothing,” is cooking on the Hardy-Jaguars front.

Hardy, who turns 28 next Thursday, has been available since the Dallas Cowboys decided not to re-sign him earlier this offseason.

The Jaguars’ interest in Hardy – even if it was a get-to-know-each-other session – is interesting and could be a sign they are still searching for an experienced pass rusher.

Entering the start of training camp next week, their top two rushers are Dante Fowler (no games after missing 2015 with an ACL injury) and Yannick Ngakoue (a third-round pick this year).

Owner Shad Khan was at the Jaguars’ facility throughout the day so it’s assumed he met with Hardy along with general manager Dave Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley.

Had the Jaguars signed Hardy, they would have been subject to public scrutiny because of Hardy’s controversial past.

Hardy missed only two games in his first four years with Carolina (2010-13), but played only one game in 2014 after being placed exempt/commissioner’s list following a domestic violence incident. He was found guilty in a bench trial that year and immediately appealed and sought a jury trial. On the opening day of that trial, a judge threw out the case when former girlfriend Nicole Holder, Hardy’s accuser, did not cooperate with prosecutors. Last November, the charges were expunged.

Hardy was suspended for the first four games of last year (after it was reduced from 10 games) and had six sacks. He has 40 sacks in 72 games.
Érdekes.

Hiba volt olyan gyorsan túladni rajta anno. Vajon ha nincs a Joeckel pick, ittl enne még? Szerintem igen.

Jaguars' goal is to find third reliable pass-catcher

Maybe seven guys for one spot, or maybe seven guys for no spots.

The Jaguars are that established at the receiver position entering training camp next week.

Locked in are Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Rashad Greene and Marqise Lee. Mostly likely on the roster is Bryan Walters.

If the Jaguars keep five receivers like the last two years, that’s bad news for Arrelious Benn, Tony Washington, Rasheed Bailey, Rashad Lawrence, Jamal Robinson, Shaq Evans and Shane Wynn.

One position where the August drama will be minimal — if everybody stays healthy — is this group whose overhaul started two preseasons ago.

Leading the group are Robinson (80 catches-1,400 yards-14 touchdowns) and Hurns (64-1,031-10). Only the Jaguars, Arizona, Denver and the New York Jets had two 1,000-yard receivers last year and only the Jaguars, Cincinnati and the Jets had two players with at least 10 touchdown catches.

“With those two guys, the game will slow down a tad and they’ll see things better and understand their positions better than they did a year ago,” receivers coach Jerry Sullivan said.

Robinson is the Jaguars’ No. 1 and eligible for a contract extension next offseason.

“He got better and better last year and more confident,” Sullivan said. “The know-how of having played a full year and knowing what to expect will be an asset.”

Because he was undrafted and able to sign an extension after two years, Hurns was rewarded with a four-year, $40 million deal last month.

Robinson will line up exclusively outside, but Hurns will be moved around.

“He’ll play inside some,” Sullivan said. “He’s got a good feel in there for a guy who’s been outside a lot.”

Greene played mostly in the slot last year before and after thumb surgery that landed him on short-term injured reserve.

“I want him to take what he does in practice to the game and not let the game speed up,” Sullivan said. “He was more mature than most as a rookie last year and he’ll keep learning as he goes.”

The wild card is Lee. If healthy, how can he be used? They won’t say it, but it’s to the point that anything the Jaguars get out of him is a bonus. Lee received a ton of snaps in the offseason program because Robinson’s activity in particular was limited.

“[The offseason] was great for Marqise’s confidence because since he’s been here, he had always run into [an injury] roadblock,” Sullivan said. “You could see his confidence improve — he had a good feeling about what he was doing.”

Said Hurns: “Oh man, if Marqise is full strength, he can add an explosive, dynamic weapon to our offense. He’s looking way better as far as his route-running. With him on the field, teams have to be aware of him. They can’t double A-Rob or me.”

And that really should be the goal for the Jaguars during the preseason: establishing a solid No. 3 to take some of the attention away from Robinson and Hurns. If Lee can be a deep threat, great. If Greene can be an effective possession receiver, even better.

Walters enters camp as the solid No. 5, capable of running the entire route tree and find open pockets in zone coverage.

“B-Walt is Mr. Reliable,” Hurns said. “You’ll get the same thing out of him every day. He’ll make the tough catches and he’s also going to win on his routes. He’s a guy everybody can trust.”

Of the remaining receivers, Benn probably has the upper hand; he was on his way to making the team last preseason until breaking his collarbone.

“He’s a big, strong, physical guy,” Sullivan said. “He should be a top-notch special teams guy and be a dependable guy who can come in and be a relief pitcher.”

Yeldon, Ivory looking for form one-two punch

Fantasy football owners looking for insight on how the Jaguars will split the carries between tailbacks Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon — and which one they should draft early — well, Kelly Skipper isn’t showing his hand.

“With Chris and T.J., we’ve got two big backs that will compete and complement each other and share the load and be heavily involved,” said Skipper, the Jaguars’ second-year running backs coach.

The Jaguars drafted Yeldon in last year’s second round and he gained 740 yards before a knee injury kept him out of the final three games. In the opening hours of free agency March 9, they signed Ivory, whose 1,070 yards led the AFC and were fifth in the NFL.

Who takes the first-and-10 snap against Green Bay in Week 1? Don’t know.

Who gets the bulk of the attempts if the Jaguars are attempting to run out the clock in a win? Not sure.

“They’re going to stay fresh and give us a great opportunity to win games,” Skipper said.

Ivory and Yeldon — or Yeldon and Ivory — are the no-doubt top two tailbacks on the roster. But then it gets interesting.

For the second straight year, the Jaguars won’t carry a fullback. They kept five on last year’s opening-day roster. On the roster are Denard Robinson, Corey Grant, Jonas Gray and Joe Banyard and they could battling for two or three spots.

“We’ve got good competition from top to bottom,” Skipper said. “Special teams will probably determine how deep we’ll be on the final roster.”

If healthy, Ivory and Yeldon will get the chunk of the carries.

For the Jaguars last year, Yeldon had 60.3 percent (182 of 302) of the non-quarterback rushing attempts.

For the New York Jets last year, Ivory had 63.9 percent (247 of 386) of the non-quarterback rushing attempts.

Twelve NFL teams last year had two running backs with at least 100 carries, including five playoff teams: Arizona, Denver, Cincinnati, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and Seattle.

Despite Ivory’s experience — 70 games and 883 carries — Skipper said the preseason games will be good for him.

“That’s going to be important — training camp and the preseason games are crucial so he can get experience with the different calls and adjustments and be up to speed for the regular season,” Skipper said.

Skipper’s scouting report on Ivory: “He’s a physical runner. He can handle a heavy work-load and the thing about him, he runs in attack mode. … He catches the ball well — that’s the one thing that surprised me. … And he brings a veteran presence.”

Don’t count out Yeldon to be the Week 1 starter, though.

Yeldon was the Jaguars’ go-to back last year, posting two 100-yard games — 105 at Indianapolis and 115 against Buffalo, but only two touchdowns.

Skipper’s scouting report on Yeldon: “He gained valuable experience last year and he improved a lot. The big thing for him is to continue his growth. … He’ll be a major contributor. He can make plays in the run and pass game. … He’s a runner who can slash and make people miss in tight quarters.”

Regardless if the Jaguars keep four or five tailbacks, Skipper said, “some hard decisions,” will be required.

“But that’s a good thing,” Skipper said. “They’re a lot different from each other.”

Lumping them into two categories, Robinson and Grant are in the speed section and Banyard and Gray are in the physical section.

Entering the final year of his contract, Robinson’s role is expected to be reduced for the second straight year — he had 135 carries in 2014 and 67 last year.

“He needs to provide instant offense,” Skipper said. “He has to be consistent with his assignments and work on the little things, like taking the hand-off and being able to stay focused and make plays when he has the opportunity.”

Grant could be the fastest player on the Jaguars – he was unofficially timed at 4.25 and 4.27 seconds in the 40-yard dash at Auburn’s Pro Day in March 2015. He was the Jaguars’ main kick returner (27.5-yard average) when a hip injury ended his rookie year after only six games.

“I’m excited to see his growth as a player,” Skipper said. “He’s a one-cut runner that can get to top-speed quickly.”

Grant’s roster spot could hinge on him re-claiming the kick return spot.

Banyard was promoted from the Jaguars’ practice squad for the final five games (no carries). Gray was signed off Miami’s practice squad and gained 54 yards on 14 carries in two games for the Jaguars.

“Joe is more of a bigger back, over 220 pounds [221] and a physical, downhill runner,” Skipper said. “I’m excited to see Jonas after a full offseason in our system. He can stick his foot in the ground and he has power.”
