It’s what general manager Dave Caldwell has been waiting for, right?

“Not really, no,” he said.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, teams are allowed to sign free agents, and the Jaguars are perfectly positioned to win the Offseason Championship Belt.

It’s what Caldwell has been plotting for in terms of saving up salary cap space, right?

“No, not necessarily,” he said. “We’re still going to build through the draft.”

That’s the right strategy to have, but for the next week, it’s all about free agency.

The Jaguars have the money (more than $64 million in available cap space, most in the league as of Friday) and the needs (particularly playmakers to help spark an impotent offense).

And they should be desperate. Year 3 is generally the Win Or Else Season. The Jaguars’ sense of urgency has already been on display by the hiring of four new offensive assistant coaches, led by coordinator Greg Olson.

Caldwell and coach Gus Bradley have consistently brushed off questions about the pressure being acute this year, but owner Shad Khan expects more than seasons of 4-12 and 3-13.

“At some point, the honeymoon is over,” said ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick, who previously worked in the Washington and Philadelphia front offices. “The building-this-thing-for-the-future mantra starts to become the we’re-building-this-thing-to-try-and-win-now [in the third year]. There’s no question that Dave or anyone else in that position would start to feel that right now.”

The choices Caldwell and Co. make starting Tuesday will go a long way in defining the success or failure of this regime. Sign tight end Julius Thomas and receiver Randall Cobb and the Jaguars improve to seven wins next year? That saves jobs and earns contract extensions. Sign lesser players who can’t help the Jaguars climb the AFC South standings? At some point, Khan’s patience will wear thin … or out.

“All of us have expectations and are trying to find ways to take this team to another level,” Bradley said. “[The amount of cap space] is exciting. That’s one of things Dave and I and Shad talked about [in January 2013] – let’s get us back in great shape with the cap. That was one of our objectives.

“Now we do have some money. We’ll see what happens.”

Aggressive, but selective

The Jaguars have spent most of the last month evaluating the free agent class — days of lengthy discussions. But when Tuesday rolls around, things move quickly — decisions will have to be made in minutes.

“There are going to be some players you want to make your mind up on [rapidly] because you don’t want to miss out on the second player at that position,” Caldwell said. “If you have to wait until Wednesday or Thursday, players 2 and 3 have probably committed by then.”

The Jaguars need player 1-type guys at tight end (if they choose to ultimately cut Marcedes Lewis), slot receiver (to create a middle-of-the-field versatile threat), running back (there isn’t a bell-cow on the roster), free safety (to lead the young secondary), right tackle (to close that revolving door) and strong-side linebacker (ditto).

It would be terrific for the Jaguars if they could procure Thomas, Cobb, New England free safety Devin McCourty and Green Bay right tackle Bryan Bulaga, allowing them to address running back and strong-side linebacker in the draft.

The Jaguars want to be aggressive, but also smart. If the price for a player 1-type guy goes off the rails, Caldwell will bow out and move on to the next option.

“We have a breaking point for every player,” Caldwell said. “Any year is a good year to have cap space, but you have to be wise so you don’t mortgage your future. There isn’t a sense of urgency for us to go out and spend for the sake of spending. But we’ll be aggressive. If there is a player we want, we’re going to do what we need to do to get him.”

Translation: The Jaguars will have plans B through, oh, F, in place.

If they can’t get McCourty, does Philadelphia’s Nate Allen fit better than Denver’s Rahim Moore or Houston’s Kendrick Lewis?

If they can’t get Thomas, do they sign Miami’s Charles Clay to an offer sheet (the Dolphins would have the right to match)?

If they can’t get Cobb, do they shift their focus completely away from receiver?

And what about right tackle? Bulaga has broken down physically twice in the last three years so maybe the Jaguars go in another direction, like signing a veteran center.

Critical week

Sitting in his EverBank Field office on Monday, Caldwell took a break from watching video of a Big Ten offense to review his current roster position by position. The highlights:

Caldwell’s “hope” is Marqise Lee or Allen Robinson can “grow into a No. 1 this year or the following year.”

More production from the tight end position is, “important … and it’s equally important in the running game. We have to be able to run the ball and a lot of that hinges on the tight end position.”

Finding an Otto (strong-side) linebacker is “challenging,” because it’s a “unique fit.”

Cornerbacks Aaron Colvin, Demetrius McCray and Dwayne Gratz provide the Jaguars with a “good core. I think we’d like to add somebody along the line, whether it’s free agency or the draft.”

And solidifying the free safety spot is “very important.”

The chance to address those issues starts Saturday with the talking and Tuesday with the signing. And let’s not be naïve. For all the talk about the Jaguars’ culture, it will be about one thing — guaranteed money. The Jaguars need to offer a lot of it to secure players who can help win games.

“They have a lot of cap space. That’s all well and good,” Riddick said. “But at the end of the day, it’s about picking the right players and building your program in such a way that it’s starting to show results on the field. Dave and Gus are two people that I like a lot, but it’s a big year for them, for sure.”

Mellesleg 2016 után összesen 16 embernek van nálunk jelenleg szerződése, szóval jövőre is elég nagy cap spaceünk lesz még előreláthatólag.

Caldwell azt mondta az imént Lagemanéknek, hogy minden FA célpont neve mellett van egy összeg, és afőlé nem fogunk menni. Mint mondta, ha az embernek sok pénze van, akkor hajlamos nagyobb hibákat véteni, mint mikor kevés van neki, és ezt nagyon szeretné elkerülni.
Szombattól indul számára a nagyüzem FA ügyben, jelenleg mint elmondta főleg colege tapeket néz.
Szeretnénk igazolni pár embert 4-5 évre, de lesznek megint 1-2 éves "stop gap" igazolások is, igaz nem a jövő héten.

Greg Hardy

Team: Carolina.

Position: Defensive end.

Age (on Sept. 1): 27.

The case for signing Hardy: The long-term reward outweighs the short-term headache.

Hardy’s legal problems involving a domestic dispute are over. The NFL could still suspend Hardy for part of the 2015 season, a situation that should become clearer in the coming days. He already missed the final 15 games, as well as Carolina’s two playoff games, last season.

Still, even if Hardy were to miss the first two to four games of the 2015 season, he’s too young and proven not to pursue. The Panthers thought enough of Hardy to franchise him heading into 2014, paying him $13.1 million.

Hardy has recorded 27 sacks in his last 32 games. You simply don’t see production like that in a player this young who then becomes available. Hardy has been durable in the NFL, missing two games in his first four years combined before the 2014 season.

Hardy would be the ideal Leo in coach Gus Bradley’s scheme. Hardy is 6-foot-4 and weighs 275 pounds with the length (34-inch arms) the Jaguars covet.

The Jaguars’ pass rush was the strength of last season’s lousy team, but it’s also misleading. While the Jaguars recorded 45 sacks, they didn’t consistently generate pressure.

Defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks led the Jaguars with 8.5 sacks last season but is recovering from a torn ACL sustained in the regular-season finale. Chris Clemons (6-3, 254) registered eight sacks from the Leo spot but turns 34 in October.

The Jaguars could dramatically reshape their pass rush by adding Hardy. The Leo position would be settled for years to come.

Hays Carlyon

Devin McCourty

Team: New England.

Position: Free safety.

Age (on Sept. 1): 28.

The case for signing McCourty: The Jaguars’ secondary needs a lynchpin. They feel they have a strong safety (Johnathan Cyprien). They feel they have an emerging corner (Demetrius McCray). And they feel they have a standout-in-the-making at the other corner spot (Aaron Colvin).

But the group, which also includes likely No. 3 cornerback Dwayne Gratz and No. 3 safety Josh Evans, needs to be rounded out by a free safety who will allow the Jaguars to play their preferred single-high look, can range from sideline to sideline, be a sure open-field tackler, produce turnovers and be the vocal leader on and off the field.

McCourty would be That Guy.

Having completed his fifth year in the league (all with New England), McCourty had 67 tackles and two interceptions in the 2014 regular season. He moved from cornerback to safety midway through the 2012 season and solidified the Patriots’ secondary.

McCourty is renowned for his coverage ability when called upon and for making big plays — 17 interceptions and seven forced fumbles in 77 career games (all starts). And he’s durable — he’s missed only three games in five years.

McCourty may not hit the open market if he and the Patriots can agree to a new deal before Tuesday. But if he does, the Jaguars will join Philadelphia, Chicago and Tennessee in a big-money pursuit. McCourty’s brother, Jason, plays for the Titans.

The Jaguars should be prepared to make Devin McCourty among the highest-paid safeties in the game. The floor may be a five-year, $45 million contract that would leave him behind only New Orleans’ Jairus Byrd ($10.6 million average) and San Diego’s Eric Weddle ($10.3 million average).

Ndamukong Suh

Team: Detroit.

Position: Defensive tackle.

Age (on Sept. 1): 28.

The case for signing Suh: He’s arguably the best defensive free agent since legendary end Reggie White signed with Green Bay 22 years ago.

Suh is a rare treasure because he’s just hitting his prime and is already an elite player. The 6-4, 307-pound Suh simply wrecks opposing interior offensive lines and forces quarterbacks to keep an eye on the rush.

Suh is a three-time first-team All-Pro in five seasons, which includes 36 sacks. He recorded 53 tackles (21 for a loss) with 8.5 sacks last season. That doesn’t count his two sacks against Dallas in a playoff loss.

Detroit finished second in total defense and was first against the run this past season. The Jaguars were 27th in the league at stopping the run last season.

Suh is also durable, never missing a game because of an injury. He did get suspended for two games in 2011 for stomping on a Packers lineman. Good, the Jaguars need some nastiness.

Landing Suh will mean making him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. That means eclipsing the deal Houston gave J.J. Watt: six years for $100,005,425 ($16.6 million a year) with $51,876,000 guaranteed.

The Jaguars should offer Suh a six-year deal worth at least $105 million ($17.5 million a year) with $55 million guaranteed. The Jaguars could make this deal and still have over $40 million in cap space.

Plus, who wouldn’t love the “Suhval” chants at EverBank Field when Suh blows up a play?

Hays Carlyon

Jason Worilds

Team: Pittsburgh.

Position: Outside linebacker

Age (on Sept. 1): 27.

The case for signing Worilds: For as much talk about the Jaguars’ improved sack total last year (45, up from 31 in 2013), there should be an emphasis on solidifying the Leo spot, not only for the present but the future.

Clemons is 33 and Andre Branch has only 10 sacks in 38 career games.

Enter Worilds.

He’s set to hit the open market after playing for Pittsburgh last year on the transition tag ($9.754 million).

He would have cost the Steelers more than $11 million if they used the tag on him again this year.

Unlike most of the other Jaguars’ free agent candidates, they need to do a projection on Worilds, which is always a gamble when paying the kind of money he’ll command.

A 3-4 outside linebacker for the Steelers, Worilds (6-2, 240 pounds) would be a 4-3 defensive end for the Jaguars.

He has 25.5 sacks in 73 games, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds coming out of Virginia Tech and is equal parts able to set the edge (he had 28 run-game tackles last year) and use his athleticism to get around offensive tackles (7.5 sacks, tied for the team lead).

Worilds played 998 snaps for the Steelers last year so he’s comfortable being an every-down player, although his playing time would likely decrease if used in the Jaguars’ defensive line rotation.

One projection for Worilds could be a four-year, $30 million contract with $18 million guaranteed.

Ryan O’Halloran


Nate Allen

Team: Philadelphia.

Position: Safety.

Age (on Sept. 1): 27.

The case for signing Allen: If the Jaguars come up empty on McCourty, the need for a free safety would still need to be addressed, and it doesn’t appear if the draft will be the best place to find one. Allen has started 69 of 74 career games and would instantly become the most experienced player in the Jaguars’ starting secondary.

Allen has a nose for the football — 10 interceptions, 31 pass breakups and three fumble recoveries in his career.

Last year for the Eagles, Allen played 1,076 or 1,158 snaps (93 percent) and had 62 tackles and four interceptions.

Watching the Week 3 Redskins-Eagles game, Allen can be used in multiple ways — single-high safety, cover 2, in the box for run support and covering the tight end or slot receiver.

After McCourty, the free safety market dwindles. It consists of Allen, Denver’s Rahim Moore and St. Louis’ Rodney McLeod. A red flag about Allen came last month when he was detained (but ultimately not charged) after a 16-year old girl accused him of indecent exposure. Police concluded there was not enough evidence to charge Allen after the accuser changed her story multiple times.

If the Jaguars are interested in Allen, a good point could a four-year, $18 million contract ($4.5 million average). He made $3 million last year.

Ryan O’Halloran
