“I just think about the opportunities I get and try to capitalize on those,” said Johnson. “On special teams, anything I can do to get better, and they coach me up. That’s just how I roll. At the end of the day, it’s the coaches’ decision. I just try to make a way for myself any way I can.”

“I’m getting a lot of special teams work. I’m in there for every special teams meeting taking notes. That’s how I’m going to get my niche. I understand that fully.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars' current plan regarding Justin Blackmon is to have the wide receiver return once he's reinstated from an indefinite suspension for multiple violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy, league sources told ESPN.

The Jaguars have no sense of when -- or even if -- Blackmon will ever be eligible to play in the NFL.

The Jaguars don't expect Blackmon to be available this year -- he sat out the first four games and the last eight games of 2013 because of suspensions.

The site updated its chart on Monday and estimates the Jaguars have $32.9 million in space.

Now, for some perspective on how much space that is for general manager Dave Caldwell to work with going forward:

-Cleveland has the second-most space at $26.4 million, giving the Jaguars $6.5 million more in space than any other team in the league.

-The Jaguars also have more cap space that the 10 teams closest to the cap combined. Denver, Detroit, New Orleans, Washington, San Diego, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Baltimore and the New York Giants have less space collectively than the Jaguars.

Hello, Otto.

Last year, Jaguars fans became familiar with the Leo position, a lighter defensive end whose specialty was rushing the quarterback.

This year, coach Gus Bradley has deleted the Sam linebacker from the playbook and replaced it with the Otto, a physical/athletic/versatile player who will be positioned along the line of scrimmage.

The goals in creating the Otto: Be more multiple in their looks without radically changing the personnel, help a run defense that was 29th in the NFL last year, provide another option for a pass rush that was tied for last in the league and have a player who is comfortable in coverage.

Dekoda Watson was signed on the second day of free agency from Tampa Bay to be the Otto.

“It’s something that fits me and my ability,” he said.

Jaguars linebackers coach Robert Saleh calls the Otto, “a pretty cool position. We can line him up in a bunch of different places, and it’s a unique position because of the things we’ll ask him to do.”

The Jaguars spent most of their free agent money to improve a defense that wasn’t stout or opportunistic, adding Watson, Red Bryant, Ziggy Hood and Chris Clemons. They will all play a role, but watching Watson’s potential impact will be intriguing.

The players were introduced to the new position in late April, and they instantly saw the possibilities.

“It’s exciting to know we’re going to have some people who will now concentrate on specific aspects of their game and not have to worry about what the other two linebackers will be doing,” Mike linebacker Paul Posluszny said.

Posluszny and Will linebacker Geno Hayes will remain lined up 5 yards off the line of scrimmage, but their roles won’t be completely in concert with the Otto.

SIMILAR TO IRVIN

In Seattle, where Bradley was the defensive coordinator from 2009-12 and Saleh a defensive assistant from 2011-13, the Seahawks deploy Bruce Irvin as a Sam linebacker. The Jaguars’ Otto will have some — but not all — of the characteristics in addition to a different name.

“Some of the things we’ll ask the Otto to do, I’m not sure they’re asking Bruce to do,” Bradley said.

Said Saleh: “We have a different vision for our guy.”

That vision will most likely be a heavier involvement in the run game and coverage. Posluszny said the Jaguars’ linebackers watched Irvin cut-ups to get a feel for what the Otto will bring to the defense.

Charting Irvin’s activity in Seattle’s loss last year at Indianapolis showed how versatile the Jaguars expect Watson to be.

■ Irvin played 35 of 63 snaps (not including two Colts kneel-downs) and rushed the passer 15 times, dropped into coverage 11 times and played the run nine times.

■ Irvin lined up at the line of scrimmage on all but one snap.

“Our guy will be near the line of scrimmage, close to the tight end and have a good, physical presence,” Posluszny said.

■ Irvin started plays on the weak (no tight end) and strong (tight end) sides of the formation.

“That’s what our guy will do,” Bradley said.

■ And Irvin played six snaps as a Leo, sometimes inside of the defensive end.

“On third down, maybe our Otto is a Leo,” Bradley said. “When we crunch the numbers and which guys are [active for the game], the Otto may be our third Leo or an extra rusher, and that’s why [the Jaguars signed] Dekoda. He can run. He’s a third or fourth Leo.”

The pass rushing aspect of the Otto will be almost entirely new to the Jaguars’ scheme.

Last year, the Jaguars’ now-extinct Sam linebacker (Russell Allen, John Lotulelei or J.T. Thomas) came off the field in passing situations, replaced by a fifth defensive back.

Reviewing four games from 2013 — Week 1 against Kansas City, Week 10 at Tennessee and the Week 12 and 14 games against Houston — the Jaguars used a linebacker 38 times to rush the quarterback, and it was all Posluszny or Hayes except for one by Allen.

In the last two years, Jaguars linebackers have a combined 7.5 sacks.

Enter Otto.

WHERE DO I SIGN?

Watson played only 24.4 percent of Tampa Bay’s defensive snaps last year, but the video showed the Jaguars’ coaches enough to project him as the starting Otto.

Watson arrived in Jacksonville on the night of March 12 — hours after the open market opened — and heard Bradley’s pitch.

“I loved it,” Watson said. “I’ve done a little bit of everything, and that’s what has really helped me out — the more you can do, the better off you’ll be. It was pretty much, ‘Where do I sign?’ I felt at home here. The presentation from Coach Gus said a lot.”

Watson signed a three-year, $6.25 million contract on March 13.

Watson missed the first three organized team activity workouts because of a groin injury, but Saleh said Watson “absolutely” fits the Otto.

The Jaguars then moved LaRoy Reynolds from the Mike to the Otto spot and he took the first-team reps last week.

“He’s got really good strength and good speed, so I think he has a faster chance to play there,” Bradley said.

The Otto’s ability to rush the passer will take something off the plate of Posluszny and Hayes.

Posluszny’s role will remain the same, but Bradley said Hayes’ will be adjusted. He’ll line up in certain situations behind the three-technique defensive tackle (who is lined up between the guard and tackle) as well as the one-technique defensive tackle (who is lined up between the guard and center).

The Otto’s effectiveness will be tested early. The Jaguars face Philadelphia (second in yards per game last year), Washington (fifth-best in rushing) and Indianapolis (combined 67 points in two wins over the Jaguars in 2013) in the first three weeks.

“It opens things up to a new level of linebacker play,” Saleh said. “This player will not be locked into a certain spot. It will really be a fun position.”

When the Jaguars claimed him off waivers, they were a few raised eyebrows that the Jaguars grabbed him just to pick his brain because they opened the regular season against the Chiefs.

A Kansas City Star writer scoffed of the move, “Who do the Jaguars thinking they’re kidding?’’

If that was the plan, it didn’t work very well as the Jaguars lost, 28-2.

Coach Gus Bradley insisted that wasn’t the plan. He said they claimed him because general manager Gus Bradley felt he was the sleeper quarterback in the 2011 draft when the Chiefs took him on the fifth round coming out of Iowa.

He said they were intrigued by him based on his body of work in college at Iowa.

And except for being cut in a roster move for two days in September, Stanzi was on the roster all last season.

Still, for the third straight season, he didn’t see the field. He was inactive for all but four games and didn’t play in those four.

Despite the fact he didn’t play last year, the Jaguars brought him back this year. His task as the third quarterback is to convince the Jaguars to keep three quarterbacks.

Veteran Chad Henne and rookie Blake Bortles are set in the top two spots unless one of them gets injured. Rookie Stephen Morris is more of a developmental project.

As the third team quarterback, Stanzi has to make the most of the few reps he gets. He did that Thursday when Bortles was at the NFLPA Premier photo shoot and Stanzi got more reps than he normally does.

He got good reviews from Bradley, who said he’s surprised the Jaguars with his showing so far.

Bradley said he’s, “really worked hard at owning the offense so he can play with more freedom.’’

Stanzi isn’t going to worry about his status

“That part of the game is out of my control. I can only focus on trying to get better. That’s where my mindset is,’’ he said.

He doesn’t get upset because he only gets a few reps in team drills.

“You have to deal with that part of the job and try to go out there and compete and put your best stuff out there when you do get a chance. You don’t worry about the reps you don’t get. You worry about the reps you do get,’’ he said.

When he was asked if it’s fair he’s never gotten a chance he play, he said, “What’s fair? I don’t know that it’s my domain to be deciding what is fair and what’s not fair. Life is not fair. You deal with what you have and try to make the best of it.’’

Stanzi said he hasn’t lost any confidence in his ability as he attempts to win a roster spot this year.

“I think everybody in the NFL has to have confidence they can play,’’ he said. “There are a lot of other guys in similar situations.’’
