Bemásolom az Athleticről is, mert gondolom nem mindenkinek van előfizetése:ROUND 1
No. 24: Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: Harris will fit the Steelers the way his namesake did when they drafted Franco Harris in the first round 49 years ago. He will be what Mike Tomlin calls his “bell cow” or their primary “toter of the ball.” He is No. 1 and with his ability to run, catch and block, he may never come off the playing field. Harris will energize a lethargic running game
Nicole Auerbach’s analysis: What’s most impressive about Harris is his ability to make everything he does on the field look smooth, and a lot of that is a credit to how his mind works. He knows when to be powerful and plow through defenders. He knows when he needs to get skinny to get through a hole in the defensive line. And he certainly knows when it’s time to hurdle an opponent. He has an innate feel for it all. What the Steelers are getting in Najee Harris
Dane Brugler’s analysis: Harris winds up in Pittsburgh as expected. The Steelers had a historically bad run game last season, which goes beyond just the running back position. But Harris will improve things as Pittsburgh makes a run during their small window with Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback. There are still major issues on the line, but his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and impact the offense in different ways will give the Steelers a boost.
Sheil Kapadia’s grade: D
Harris (6-foot-1, 232) is a big, physical back. He piled up 3,843 yards on 638 carries in college. Harris is a fine prospect and should perform well for the Steelers. But it’s fair to question Pittsburgh’s use of resources here. Harris is not a home run hitter, and he’ll be running behind a subpar offensive line. Teams that have spent first-round picks on running backs in recent years have rarely been rewarded.
The Steelers could have addressed running back later in the draft or even with an inexpensive free agent. Instead, they’re committing valuable draft capital to a position where supply outweighs demand.
ROUND 2
No. 55: Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State
Mark Kaboly’s analysis: Freiermuth is nicknamed “Baby Gronk” after former Patriots and current Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski. Freiermuth wore 87 at Penn State and stands 6-foot-5, like Gronkowski. But Freiermuth has been compared more to Tyler Eifert. Freiermuth was a three-year starter and got notoriety for catches in 29 consecutive games. His 16 touchdown catches passed Mike Gesicki on the all-time Penn State tight end list.
Audrey Snyder’s analysis: Freiermuth’s junior season ended abruptly in November due to a torn anterior and posterior labrum that required surgery, but he was still named the Big Ten’s tight end of the year. He sustained the injury in Penn State’s second game, and rather than immediately shutting it down, he wanted to try to play through it. Recovery from the injury held him out of most pro day drills except for pass catching. Freiermuth previously said he was on pace to be full-go by the draft.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: The Steelers first two picks are very reflective of their current window to win now with Ben Roethlisberger. Pittsburgh’s taken a running back and tight end who should be immediate contributors and help the quarterback. His “Baby Gronk” nickname is a tad ambitious, but he is a physical blocker with dependable hands as a pass-catcher.
Sheil Kapadia’s grade: B-
It’s tough to figure out what the Steelers’ overall plan is. Their selection of Najee Harris in the first round suggested they wanted to fill an immediate need that will help them compete in 2021. But their selection of Freiermuth (6-foot-5, 251) suggests they’re thinking about the future, given that they have Eric Ebron under contract.
Freiermuth is a well-rounded prospect who caught 92 balls for 1,185 yards and 16 touchdowns in 30 career games. He’s a physical, big-bodied tight end who can break tackles and win on contested catches. He might not have an especially high ceiling, but Freiermuth has starter-level traits.
ROUND 3
No. 87: Kendrick Green, C, Illinois
Mark Kaboly’s analysis: Green fits the mold of what the Steelers have been doing with their offensive line all offseason. They’ve preached the return of physicality among the five up front, and that’s what they continue to do. Green is versatile and quick, but more than anything else, he plays with a mean and nasty streak. At times, he’s too aggressive and that gets him in trouble with his technique, but as Mike Tomlin says, “it’s better to say ‘whoa’ than ‘sic’em.’”
Dane Brugler’s analysis: The Steelers needed to address center on day two and Green is a terrific answer. A twitchy blocker, he moves really well and stays balanced to reach, block and engulf at the second level. He can play center or guard and terrific value this late.
Sheil Kapadia’s grade: A
Green (6-foot-2, 305) started 33 games — 29 at left guard and four at center. He tested well athletically and should be able to play any of the three interior offensive line positions. Given the Steelers’ need up front, they’ll likely count on Green to play right away. He has the ability to help them in 2021.
ROUND 4
No. 128: Dan Moore, OT, Texas A&M
Mark Kaboly’s analysis: The Steelers’ draft is getting better with every pick and are sticking to their offseason plan of upgrading the running game with a physicality. Who knows if they all will pan out, but they all fit into a specific category.
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: Some thought the Steelers would draft a tackle in the first round. Nope. Second? Nope. Third? Nope. But they rang the bell in the fourth round by drafting tackle Dan Moore of Texas A&M.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: A three-year starter at Texas A&M, Moore was the left tackle in head coach Jimbo Fisher’s spread, pro-style scheme. Along with Carson Green at right tackle, the Aggies had the same starting tackle tandem in every game the last three seasons and the Texas A&M coaches believe Moore’s improvements in 2020 make him the best pro prospect among their senior offensive linemen. Moore has adequate foot quickness in his setup to mirror rushers off the edge and push them wide of the pocket. While he flashes strength in the run game, he can be rocked on his heels in pass pro and needs to improve his base strength. Overall, Moore needs to be more forceful with his hands to avoid leaning on blocks, but he moves well with body control and is an ascending talent to develop into a reliable NFL reserve at either tackle or guard.
No. 140: Buddy Johnson, LB, Texas A&M
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: Steelers stay at Texas A&M with their second pick in the fourth round (140) and draft Aggies LB Bucky Johnson. He’s the first player on defense they have drafted after the first four went on offense.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: A four-year starter at Texas A&M, Johnson was the weakside linebacker in defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s 4-2-5 base scheme. After moving inside, he had team highs of 77 tackles as a junior and 86 as a senior and was responsible for several impact-level plays, including two defensive touchdowns and the forced fumble that swung the game for Texas A&M’s win over Florida. An aggressive, alert defender, Johnson has the read-and-react skills and pursuit range to track down the football. While he moves well in space, his coverage athleticism is better than his instincts. Overall, Johnson needs to improve his feel in coverage and consistency as a gap-filler, but he plays fast and fierce with the character that could cement a roster spot in the NFL.
ROUND 5
No. 140: Isaiahh Loudermilk, DE, Wisconsin
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: The Steelers made their first trade of the draft and selected Wisconsin defensive end Isaiahh Loudermilk in the fifth round with the 156th pick. They had no fifth-round pick until they traded their 2022 fourth-rounder to Miami for that one. The Steelers expect three comp picks in 2022, which factored in their decision to trade a 2022 fourth-rounder to Miami for the pick they used on Loudermilk.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: Isaiahh Loudermilk played eight-man football at West Elk High School and finished his career with 267 tackles, 22.0 sacks, three interceptions and eight touchdown catches on offense. He also starred in baseball, basketball (19.2 points per game) and track (shot put conference title). A three-star recruit, he committed to Wisconsin over Kansas State and Oregon. Loudermilk battled multiple knee injuries over his career, but was a key cog at defensive end in the Badgers’ 3-4 base scheme. He is quick off the snap to knife through gaps, using his hands to pry open the shoulder of blockers, but his counter measures are often ineffective if he doesn’t win at the snap. While active and strong-willed, he struggles to stay square against the run, lacking the leverage or lower-body mass to anchor, especially versus double teams. Overall, Loudermilk doesn’t play with burst or power to be a consistent disruptor, but he is a worker bee who brings energy and toughness.
ROUND 6
No. 216: Quincy Roche, OLB, Miami
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: Steelers draft edge rusher Quincy Roche of Miami in the sixth round (216). While listed as a defensive end, Roche will be converted to outside linebacker with the Steelers. He is 6-foot-3, 245 pounds.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: A one-year starter at Miami, Roche lined up at right defensive end in head coach Manny Diaz’s scheme, standing up and rushing with his hand on the ground. He spent four years at Temple and set the AAC record with 26.0 career sacks before transferring to Miami for the 2020 season, finishing second on the Hurricanes in tackles for loss (14.5) and sacks (4.5) behind Jaelan Phillips. Roche is an easy player to admire with his ability to pounce out of his stance and never quit in his pursuit of the football. However, he is overly reliant on that first step, lacking ideal play strength and move-to-move sequencing. Overall, Roche’s average traits will be tough to overcome vs. NFL blockers, but he is the type of pass rush prospect who will make it because of his toughness, feel and effort. He projects as a situational or subpackage rusher.
ROUND 7
No. 245: Tre Norwood, DB, Oklahoma
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: With the 245th pick in the 7th round, the Steelers finally selected a defensive back that Mike Tomlin called a “Swiss Army Knife” but listed him as safety: Tre Norwood of Oklahoma.
Dane Brugler’s analysis: Michael “Tre” Norwood attended Northside High School and posted 35 tackles and two interceptions as a senior, adding 785 rushing yards, 281 passing yards and 10 total touchdowns on offense. A three-star cornerback recruit, Norwood originally verballed to Louisville before flipping to Oklahoma. Norwood played primarily cornerback the first two seasons as a Sooner before missing the 2019 season (ACL) and moving to nickel safety in 2020. He started five of the final six games in 2020 and posted five interceptions over that span. Norwood is undersized with poor length, but he does a nice job fighting for body position in coverage and has above-average ball skills to make quarterbacks pay for their mistakes. As a run defender, he is a soft tackler, often wrestling instead of striking his target. Overall, Norwood flashed ball-hawking skills in 2020, but he has a slight body type with below-average tackling skills and might have a tough time making an NFL roster.
No. 254: Pressley Harvin III, P, Georgia Tech
Ed Bouchette’s analysis: Steelers polish off their 2021 nine-player draft by taking Georgia Tech punter Pressley Harvin with the 254th overall pick in the seventh round. You can never have enough good punters. For the first time in the past 10 drafts, the Steelers did not select a wide receiver.
Scouts’ takes to Bob McGinn on the 5-foot-11, 263-pound Harvin: The Alcolu, S.C., native led the nation last season with a gross average of 48.0 yards (net of 44.8 yards). Punted 210 times in his career for averages of 44.7 yards and 40.2 yards, respectively.
“Looks like a guard, but he’s really quick,” said one scout.
Weight remains an issue. Weighed 263 pounds at pro day in mid-March, the same number that he was for scouts in February 2020.
“He is a very good athlete, he’s just overweight,” another scout said. “He’s got a big-time leg. He’s got the best technique of (the draft’s top punters), but he’s got to get (his weight) down … (to handle) bad snaps or cold-weather snaps or windy games. I still think he’s got good feet and moves around well enough. I think he’s the most NFL-ready punter. Smith and Duffy will probably catch up pretty quick because they’re both very talented.”
