Elég nightmare lett a schedule

Ebből következően az én tippem: csoport 1vagy 2 , PO, 1 körben out. 😊

Elvileg a miénk a legnehezebb schedule idén.

Nekem tiszta JuJu.

Mondjuk Moore kapcsán ugyanúgy a depo most lelombozott kicsit.

In a blink, Shakur Brown went from being a can’t-miss playmaking defensive back who, in a worst-case scenario, likely would be drafted in the fourth round of this year’s NFL Draft to a player whose phone didn’t ring for any of the 259 picks.

No, really, a blink. Maybe two. And the Steelers couldn’t be happier.

Brown’s 40-yard time at Michigan State’s pro day wasn’t terrible, but it hurt his draft stock. He clocked in at anywhere between 4.59 and 4.63 based on which scout’s handheld time you go by, but it was a big deal, overshadowing Brown’s season-and-a-half in East Lansing, which included seven interceptions on 79 targets.

Already diminutive in stature at 5-foot-9, 185 pounds, Brown ranked second slowest in 40-yard time and slowest in 10-yard split (1.65) among the top 53 cornerbacks as ranked by The Athletic draft expert Dane Brugler’s top 54 cornerbacks and slowest 10-yard split (1.65). His stock plummeted.

“For him to get drafted in the range of the late third-round, fourth-round range, he needed to run probably a sub 4.55,” Brown’s agent, Eugene T. Lee said. “Everybody knew he wasn’t a blazer, a burner, but if he would’ve run in the low 4.50 range, we wouldn’t be sitting here. At his size, that hurt him. The pecking order at that position is a lot of times based on the 40 and not the workout.”

Brown played in only 14 games in two seasons that were shorter than normal — one because of an injury and the other because of the Big Ten’s COVID-19 late start. He didn’t take part in the Senior Bowl, and the cancelation of the NFL Combine put even more importance on his pro-day performance.

Even after his slow 40, Brugler had Brown as his 119th-ranked prospect; Pro Football Focus had him as its 156th overall (5th round), CBS.com at 153, NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah at 129 and ESPN as the 90th-best prospect (late third round).

“I have learned over 20 years of doing this that the only grades that matter are the ones who are making the picks,” Lee said. “With all due respect to the prognosticators and pundits, you have to take it with a grain of salt. I was hoping that I was wrong this time because many people had him as a top 100 guy, but based on the feedback that I got, all they wanted to know was his top-end speed.”

Lee turned out to be right.

“I think teams viewed him as a nickel only with bad speed,” Brugler said. “And that turned out to be a dealbreaker for several teams. I liked him as an early Day 3 guy and I wouldn’t be surprised if he makes the rosters.”

The Steelers hope so. They showed interest after the sixth round, but not enough to be one of their final picks. They wanted him as an undrafted free agent instead of one of the two seven-round picks they had, which they used on a corner they are converting to safety, Tre Norwood, and punter Pressley Harvin III.

The Steelers offered Brown a $25,000 signing bonus, which isn’t a lot of money when it comes to what some other teams guarantee priority free agents, but it is for the Steelers. Brown’s $25,000 bonus is the most guaranteed money the Steelers have paid an undrafted free agent in more than a decade, according to Spotrac, and very well could be the biggest ever. The Steelers gave cornerback Alexander Myers $20,000 in 2019.

The money and the Steelers’ need at nickel back after Mike Hilton — undrafted, small and slow himself — signed with the Bengals was enough for Brown to sign with the Steelers over the Chiefs, the only other team Brown was seriously considering.

“I talked to Mike Tomlin over the last couple of picks,” Brown said. “He just told me to come in and work. They have a history and a spot open. It was a smart place to go.”

Since Tomlin took over in 2007 there have been 14 undrafted free agents signed immediately after the draft who ended up making the team’s 53-man roster. Their success with UDFAs goes back even further, with James Harrison, Donnie Shell, Willie Parker and others.

“I really do think the Steelers got some great value here,” Lee said. ”

Brown said he wasn’t upset that he wasn’t drafted. He called it a “business.” Though his agent was upfront with him for weeks about the possibility he might not be drafted as high as the draft experts say, there is something about not hearing your name called on draft weekend.

“I haven’t spoken with him, but I would assume that he’s a little ticked off,” former NFL defensive back and current Michigan State secondary coach Harlon Barnett said. “I am sure that he is, and I hope that he is. He goes in there with a little chip on the shoulder and let everybody know that they messed up. The guys who make it as an undrafted free agent make it because they have a chip on their shoulder and they are supposed to have a chip on their shoulder.”

Barnett knows Brown well. He recruited him from Woodland High School in Stockbridge, Ga., in 2017 before moving to Florida State for two years then back to East Lansing last season. What he saw was a cornerback in Brown who had all the intangibles: toughness, ball skills, aggressiveness and confidence.

Barnett put Brown inside at the nickel in MSU’s five-defensive back system before sliding him to the outside. Brown played 114 slot snaps in 2020 compared to 311 outside. He finished with 25 tackles, five pass defenses and five interceptions in seven games. He led all of FBS with 0.7 interceptions per game. According to PFF, Brown recorded the seventh-highest overall grade in the nation last season (82.2) to go with the highest PFF coverage grade in the Big Ten (84.2).

“And don’t forget tackle and defend the run, and he has that ability,” Barnett said. “I am not just saying that because he is a guy that I coached and recruited. He is not a very talkative guy. He’s quiet. A good guy, but just not very talkative. He is stronger than you think. He handles bigger guys and gets his hands on them. He understands how teams are trying to attack him. He’s a sponge. Whatever coach gives him he’s going to listen and do what they ask him to do.”

Brown has a chance to make the final 53-man roster despite his speed. It might be a little aggressive thinking that he could slide into the starting nickel spot as an undrafted free agent, even if there is a need. Even though Hilton was successful, he bounced around with Jacksonville and New England before catching on with the Steelers late in 2016.

Hilton turned heads at the end of his rookie year on the practice squad and claimed the starting job heading into the season the next year.

The only experienced nickel the Steelers have on the roster now is Cam Sutton, but they would prefer to keep him outside this year with the departure of Steven Nelson. They wouldn’t hesitate to move Sutton inside if James Pierre or Justin Layne could prove capable of handling outside corner responsibilities in sub-packages, but neither has played much during their short time in the league.

Along with Brown, the Steelers added Lamont Wade as an undrafted free agent and signed veteran Arthur Maulet after the draft to provide options in the slot. Brown has the biggest upside of all of them.

“Shak is a good football player,” Barnett said. “He is strong, a good tackler, he’s tough enough. The moment won’t be too big for him. He just needs to trust himself when he gets out there. I believe he can.”

But will the speed be his undoing?

“Not to me,” Barnett said. “I saw him run with guys all the time. I think he plays faster than that time shows. Some players just have natural ball skills. Catching a ball. He’s not even thinking about that. He’s not one of those types of guys. He catches the ball and that’s huge.”

Brown’s ball skills got him the nickname “Shakspeare” because … “I make plays every day and all day,” he said. “That’s what I do. I watch film and study the game. I played quarterback when I was younger, so I know a little about the quarterback position and what they want to do.”

The Steelers will hold a three-day rookie minicamp over the weekend.

Szerintem a sémája miatt vár tőle mindenki sokat. Én is.
