Caldwell beszélt a pass rusher helyzetről, szerinte előrébb vagyunk most, mint a szezon zárásakor...

“If the season started tomorrow, we would have three pass rushers we didn’t have last year,” Dave Caldwell said.

The coach, though, sounded like reinforcements are required.

“When we have those three guys, we feel we’re considerably better on third down and on first and second downs, too, in generating a pass rush,” Caldwell said.

Again, interesting.

Because it’s unlikely the original offer to Nortman was one year before jumping to the signed four-year pact, it’s an easy assumption that Anger turned down a multi-year deal from the Jaguars. Having to settle for a one-year deal with Tampa Bay should be viewed as a lost gamble by Anger.

I asked Caldwell if it was rare for an agent to refuse to negotiate.

“Some agents do business differently,” Caldwell said. “We were honest and said, ‘Hey, this is a deal, and if you want to negotiate with us, maybe we can come to an agreement. If you don’t want to negotiate, we have to go to another option.’

“The organization had invested a third-round pick in Bryan, and we owed it to him and the organization to try and keep him here. But apparently, we were off a lot by what we expected and they expected.”

Mission mostly accomplished.
That was the message delivered Tuesday morning by Jaguars coach Gus Bradley after the opening phase of free agency produced seven signings.

“We talked about having some very good players and then adding more very good players to that group,” Bradley said at the Boca Raton Resort, site of this week’s league meeting. “And we think we did that.”

During a 114-question, 60-minute session, two themes were often brought up by Bradley: The need to be better on third down defensively and the requirement to have a sustainable running game.

Four of the newbies specifically fall into those two areas: defensive tackle Malik Jackson, running back Chris Ivory, free safety Tashaun Gipson and cornerback Prince Amukamara.

■ Jackson was the center-piece of the Jaguars’ class, the co-top target along with defensive end Olivier Vernon, who signed with the Giants. Jackson will transition back to a 4-3 scheme, although Denver’s 3-4 scheme used four down linemen on third down and Jackson lined up inside.

The ideal scenario: Sen’Derrick Marks returns to his 2013-14 form and splits base-down snaps with Jackson, an at-times wrecking ball for Denver last year.

Bradley on Jackson: “You look at his qualities and he’s a very disruptive [defensive tackle], but he has position flexibility. Some of the things we can do with him is move him around and then obviously, on third down and nickel, we can get him and a guy like Sen’Derrick on the field at the same time.”

■ Admitting Denard Robinson isn’t a No. 2 tailback, the Jaguars moved quickly to sign Ivory, whose 1,070 yards rushing were fifth-most in the NFL last year.

The ideal scenario: Ivory and T.J. Yeldon form a smash-and-dash type of combo at tailback and give the Jaguars a solid running game for the first time since Maurice Jones-Drew won the rushing title in 2011. The Jaguars also hope Yeldon will be fresher throughout the season and stay healthy.

Bradley on Ivory: “ his toughness. He’s a very violent, violent runner. I know when we prepared for him and played him [last year], he was a style of runner that our team needs and our team will feed off of. He’s a good complement. Nowadays, it’s ideal to have two backs. There was a game last year when T.J. played over 70 snaps [77 at Indianapolis], and we just felt like if we could change that up and give defenses a different style of runner, it’s always important.”

■ The biggest addition could be Gipson. The Jaguars spent three years trying to find an answer, and they finally feel they’ve found it. Gipson has 14 career interceptions.

The ideal scenario: Gipson shows he can function as the only deep safety, allowing the Jaguars to play strong safeties Johnathan Cyprien or James Sample closer to the line of scrimmage.

Bradley on Gipson: “Our thought is to have guys like Cyprien and Sample close to the box a higher percentage of the time. And with that, a guy like Gipson can play back and play sideline to sideline and be an open-field tackler. He has those traits, and his ability is to be a ball-hawk. That fits him back there as our single safety.”

■ Two days after the market opened, the Jaguars signed Amukamara to a one-year contract. A former first-round pick, he has played all 16 games just once in five years.

The ideal scenario: Amukamara stays healthy throughout camp and starts opposite Davon House and allows the Jaguars to play Aaron Colvin full-time as the inside cover corner in sub-package situations.

Bradley on Amukamara: “He plays with really good length at the line of scrimmage. He’s extremely competitive, and in our conversations and watching film with him, I just thought he really fit our style.”

The seven free agents in the fold, the Jaguars will now focus on how to use their eight draft picks.

Pláne az, hogy ismered a szomszéd dolgát sem ront a munkád minőségén: tudod, hogy mit fognak csinálni melletted, hogyan osztjátok el az embereket, mikor ki kit vesz fel, sőt a stount playek felvétele sem jelent problémát.

Hurns éves 6 millós, fejnehéz, 4-5 éves szerződés kellene kapjon. Az emelkedő salarycap (ami magával húzza a szerződéseket) miatt hamar elégedetlenkedni kezd különben. A fejnehéz szerződés nem szűkítené a mozgásteret később, a kora miatt amúgy is kinéz neki még 1 hasonló szerződés. Megtartani meg egyszerűen muszáj!!! 😊

The first core Jaguars player to receive a new contract could be receiver Allen Hurns.
Hurns, who has been reliable (one missed game) and productive (16 touchdowns) in his two seasons, is eligible for a new deal because he wasn’t drafted.

Hurns’ three-year deal expires after the 2016 season and he would become a restricted free agent.

“I think we’ll wait until after the draft to see where we’re at,” general manager Dave Caldwell said Monday during the NFL’s annual meeting at the Boca Raton Resort. “And if we did anything, it would be before the season.”

During their free-agent spending spree earlier this month, the Jaguars earmarked some of their cap space for future contract extensions.

Because they were drafted, receiver Allen Robinson, quarterback Blake Bortles and linebacker Telvin Smith aren’t eligible for extensions until March 2017. Hurns can do a deal now.

Hurns caught 51 passes for 677 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie and 64 catches for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns last year.

What Hurns and agent Drew Rosenhaus have to decide, if the Jaguars approach them, is whether to bet on a third productive season or take the security of a new contract.

Even if Hurns becomes a restricted free agent, he isn’t going anywhere — the Jaguars will tender him at a high-round level to keep him.

Beachum és Joeckel meg fognak küzdeni a kezdő LT posztért, Dave szerint Beachum 100%os lesz TCre. Kérdezték, hogy Joeckel esetleg nem mozogna be LGbe, erre Caldwell azt mondta, meglátják hogy alakul a csata Luke és Kelvin között. Májusig van idő lehívni Joeckle 5. éves opcióját, még nem döntöttünk róla, megtesszük-e.

Amukamara a sok sérülése miatt kapott 'prove it' szerződést nálunk. Nem szokásunk ilyen sérülékeny embereket igazolni, de ő megéri a próbát, és nagyon alacsony vele a rizikó.

Draft: Caldwell nyitott a letradere kb az első kör közepéig. Nem valószínű, hogy sok támadót draftolnánk, ha igen, azt azért tesszük majd, mert úgy véli a front office, hogy nagy impactot tudna hozni a csapatba, lásd tavaly Cann és Greene. Caldwell idén nem megy Pro Dayekre, csak egyéni workoutokon lesz jelen.

És a lényeg: Hurns a draft után, de a szezonnyitány előtt kaphat új, hosszútávú szerződést.

Nagyon jó igazolásról tudok beszámolni - Monte Kiffin hivatalosan is csatlakozott a Jaguars edzői stábjához! Ő alkalmazta anno Gust először az NFLben a Tampában. Most meg Gus vette maga mellé. És mivel január óta elég gyakori vendég (a DC keresélsben is részt vett), tisztában van, hogy mit akarunk csinálni. Védelmi asszisztens lesz a titulusa nálunk.

Before the Jaguars signed left tackle Kelvin Beachum, the team’s 2013 draft class, the first for the Dave Caldwell-Gus Bradley administration, could have been labeled as underachieving.

But after Beachum’s arrival? If Luke Joeckel, the second overall pick three years ago, doesn’t start in Week 1, the draft will be a big whiff because the eight-player class might have no 2016 starters.

The Jaguars’ free-agent season became a little more puzzling last week when they added Beachum, who was last seen being helped off Heinz Field last October with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Consider what Caldwell and Bradley have said about Joeckel this off-season.

Caldwell on Jan. 5: “I think [Joeckel] can be [the long-term left tackle], I do. … Yes, [he has made] a lot of progress.”

Bradley on Feb. 25: “There was part of the season we really thought [Joeckel] was in a groove and really performed well. And there were a couple of games that I know he expected better of himself. … I think this year, with another year in the system, will be good for him.”

So what changed? The Jaguars haven’t played a game since Jan. 3 so it’s not like Joeckel has provided reason to bench him.

I had Joeckel on the books for 10 sacks allowed (including five in the finale against Houston), most by a Jaguars offensive lineman. But he was a player who had three position coaches in three years and wasn’t playing next to a standout left guard.

My first thought when Beachum visited the Jaguars was that they viewed him as a guard. But when the text rolled in from a team source saying, “Left tackle open competition,” it was basically over for Joeckel. Teams always give the edge to the more recently acquired player.

Amúgy ez a hirtelen véleményváltozás érdekes, mert nem ez az egyetlen 180 fokos hirtelen fordulat a front officeban. Combine idején még azt mondták, nem sza bad túl sokat várni Folwertől, erre amióta nem sikerült egy edge rushert se szerezni, egyrészt azt mondta Caldwell is, hogy egyszerre úgyiscsak 1 LEO lehet pályán (ami hazugság, mert pl. Lightening package idején, volt hogy 3an is fent voltak egyszerre a pályán....), plusz Fowlerre hirtelen 10 sack körüli emberre tekintenek, ami nem lesz egyszerű egy kvázi rookitól, aki ACLből jön...

És ha már sérülések - a mostani FA class nagy része nem éppen az a tartós fkjta.

A positive is that defensive tackle Malik Jackson played 70 of a possible 72 regular season/playoff games in his four years for Denver.
