Ha a kezdőket nézzük az offensben a fal bal oldalát leszámítva nincs nagyon gyenge pontja a Jaguarsnak jelenleg. És lehet ott is rendezni tudjuk a sorokat egy egészséges Beachummal. A védelemben is egyedül az edge rusher poszt kérdéses nekem. Az más kérdés, hogy minőségi depthünk sajna nem igazán van se a támadófalban, se pass edge rusher DE-ben, se FS-ben.

Hát, végül nem mellette, hanem a Seahawksból nemrég kitett Cameron Marshall-al állapodott meg a csapat. Marshall 2013-ban került a ligába, de nem játszott még az NFL-ben soha. A CFL-ben már igen, a Winnipeg Blue Bombersben 19 meccsen 1007 yardot és 7 TD-t futott. Max Vittek ment a keretből miatta. Sokan mondják, hogy Brandon Allen helye sem biztos az 53-ban az alapján, ahogy a preseasonben játszott. Nem valószínű, hogy kapkodnának érte waiveren.

Ma nem edzett Amukamara, Sample, Linkenbach, Wells, Day, Jones és Miller. Prince szerencsére csak pihenz. Peyton Thompson pedig szerencsére máris kikerült az agyrázkódásprogramból.

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM

1. The quarterback

Bortles is 14-of-18 passing for 190 yards, a 147.7 rating, two touchdowns and no interceptions. He looks in command, is smart about how he’s extending the play and has been accurate. Bortles’ 77.8 completion rate is the biggest takeaway so far; he was at 58.6 percent in the 2015 regular season. “I’m really pleased with his consistency and decision-making,” coach Gus Bradley said Sunday.

2. The running game

The Jaguars’ running game has a pulse. In 19 snaps, Chris Ivory has gained 51 yards on 12 carries. In 20 snaps, T.J. Yeldon (who has started both games) has gained 41 yards on six carries and also caught a 14-yard touchdown. Either the Jaguars are being stealth about their Running Back Plan and will declare a no-doubt No. 1 back in Week 1 or they are committed to giving Ivory and Yeldon a near-equal amount of work. Bet on the latter.

3. Allen Robinson

Robinson has been the Jaguars’ best offensive player through two preseason games. He has seven catches for 114 yards in 33 snaps of work. Robinson has caught short passes, showed great body control to keep his feet inbounds and outjumped a defender.



REASONS FOR CONCERN

1. Luke Joeckel’s starting spot

Joeckel deserves to start against Green Bay in Week 1. But where? Bradley praised Joeckel for his 21-snap performance against Tampa Bay and his physicality in particular. He should be kept at left tackle until Kelvin Beachum has gone through a few weeks of practice. The concern is how quickly Joeckel could adjust to left guard because he has never taken a game snap at that position.

2. Injuries

Except for Beachum, the Jaguars are in good shape health-wise. They should keep it that way by limiting the starters’ work against Cincinnati.

3. Peaking too early

Hey, give us a break. We needed to come up with a third reason to be concerned to remain fair and balanced.



LEFT TO ACCOMPLISH

1. Finalizing the left side of the offensive line.

Chris Reed and Mackenzy Bernadeau have started the games at left guard. The coaches would love to give Beachum (left tackle) and Joeckel (left guard) a solid three quarters of work alongside each other. More and more, though, this looks like something that won’t be settled until closer to Week 1. On Sunday, Bradley said the Jaguars’ “hope” is Beachum shows enough this week that he is cleared to play against the Bengals.

2. Third-string tailback

Jonas Gray blew his chance to make a case when he ended up on injured reserve (quad). That leaves Denard Robinson, Corey Grant and Joe Banyard to compete for likely two roster spots. The Jaguars might also scan the waiver wire for a bruising tailback. They should kick the tires on Karlos Williams, cut by Buffalo on Saturday and suspended for the first four games.

3. Four or five tight ends?

Julius Thomas and Marcedes Lewis are locked in as the top two tight ends. It’s a pretty good bet that Nic Jacobs is the third and Ben Koyack has shown good blocking skills this preseason to merit a spot. Is four tight ends enough? We think it is, but if the Jaguars keep a fifth, it will be either Braedon Bowman or Neal Sterling. The Atlanta preseason finale could decide this.

REASONS FOR OPTIMISM

1. Depth at the three technique is sensational.

Caldwell signed Malik Jackson to a $85.5 million contract in March to supplant Sen'Derrick Marks. Jackson has looked the part of a dominant interior lineman in camp. Marks appears fully recovered from knee and triceps injuries and is back to his disruptive form. There are many teams running a 4-3 scheme that would love to have Marks as a starter.

2. The offseason additions look good.

Other free-agent and draft additions are performing well and are good scheme fits. Free safety Tashaun Gipson looks like a massive upgrade. Cornerback Prince Amukamara has brought a needed intensity and veteran’s savvy to the secondary. First-round cornerback Jalen Ramsey has increased the defense’s athleticism. Second-round linebacker Myles Jack has brought a physical presence backing up Posluszny.

3. Pass rush shows signs.

End Dante Fowler has been quiet in his 24 preseason snaps against the New York Jets and Tampa Bay, but he’s been a wrecking machine in training camp. His combination of speed, power and agility is rare and will lead to big plays this fall. Rookie third-round pick Yannick Ngakoue has been a consistent force as well.

REASONS FOR CONCERN

1. Penalties

The defense was called for several in the two joint practices with the Buccaneers last week and that carried over to Saturday’s game. The first four quarterbacks the Jaguars face are Aaron Rodgers, San Diego’s Philip Rivers, Baltimore’s Joe Flacco and Indianapolis’ Andrew Luck. The Jaguars can’t give those guys extra chances.

2. Lack of turnovers

The Jaguars have faced two quarterbacks this preseason, the Jets’ Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tampa Bay’s Jameis Winston, who can be careless with the ball. Winston threw a pick Saturday night, but it was on a pass that should’ve been caught by tight end Cameron Brate. Cornerback Dwayne Gratz made a nice play, diving to catch it, but isn’t expected to be a major contributor this season. The Jaguars have been better in practice after a dreadful season of takeaways last year, but it needs to show up in games.

3. Lack of safety depth

Gipson is one of the most valuable players on the team, because there is a substantial drop-off to backup Peyton Thompson. Backup strong safety James Sample has been out for a week with a shoulder injury, making the health of decent starter Johnathan Cyprien more crucial.

LEFT TO ACCOMPLISH

1. Get Day on the field.

Rookie defensive tackle Sheldon Day was drawing as many raves as any player prior to suffering a back injury. The fourth-round pick has missed the team scrimmage Aug. 5 and both preseason games so far. Bradley didn't have a specific time frame for Day's return when asked on Sunday. The Jaguars three-technique spot would get a boost if Day could return to the field soon to get up to speed in time for Green Bay.

2. Stand up to Cincinnati.

The Bengals have a better offense than the Jets or Buccaneers. Receiver A.J. Green is superb, the running back combo of Jeremy Hill and Giovani Bernard is versatile and quarterback Andy Dalton is solid. The Jaguars’ momentum will subside if Cincinnati comes in Sunday and scores 17 points in its first three possessions. This will be an excellent measuring stick for the Jaguars.

Halloren jegyzetei tegnapról

Three weeks ahead of the regular season, Jaguars defensive end Dante Fowler has been delivered his first NFL wake-up call.

On Wednesday-Thursday, during the Jaguars’ joint practices with Tampa Bay, Fowler was stood up more than once by Buccaneers right tackle/giant Demar Dotson in one-on-one drills. Fowler’s frustration bubbled over when he was ejected from Thursday’s practice.

In Saturday’s 27-21 loss to the Buccaneers, Fowler played 14 snaps and had only one “factor” play.

But coach Gus Bradley said the week was “great,” for Fowler’s development, “to realize you know what to study [about] the tackles and understanding their strengths and weaknesses. This week really brought some light to that for him.”

Fowler’s flash play came on third-and-10 during Tampa Bay’s opening drive.

The Jaguars rushed six players. Lined up at left end, Fowler took two steps forward before stunting inside. He was unblocked when center Evan Smith blocked Telvin Smith and running back Charles Sims blocked Paul Posluszny. Fowler hit Jameis Winston after he threw. The Jaguars were called for pass interference to extend the drive.

Offense

*Notable playing time totals: QB Blake Bortles and the first-unit offensive line played 21 snaps. WR Allen Robinson and TE Julius Thomas played 20 apiece. Among the reserves, OL Patrick Omameh and OL Kadeem Edwards led with 34 snaps apiece.

*Confusion on the first drive. The scoreboard had first-and-21 for the Jaguars’ initial snap; the official game book had first-and-10 (probably correct). LG Mackenzy Bernadeau’s false start pushed them back to first-and-15 from the 6. First down – Bortles extended the play (6.53 seconds) before throwing incomplete. Second down – Yeldon five-yard run. Third down – Bortles threw high to WR Marqise Lee 14 yards downfield.

*The Jaguars’ second drive started at their 42. They moved into Tampa Bay territory when Bortles scrambled for three yards and 15 was added on LB Kwon Alexander’s late hit. Bortles crashed into the Gatorade cooler behind the Buccaneers’ bench. Bortles was flushed out of the pocket although Yeldon did a nice job picking up blitzing CB Brent Grimes.

*Yeldon gained 10 yards, to the Bucs’ 30, thanks to three good blocks – Bernadeau and C Brandon Linder pulled left and Lee walled off CB Alterraun Verner. Ivory gained seven on the next play with help from Bernadeau (pulled left to right and blocked DE William Gholston) and TE Ben Koyack (who pulled right to take out LB Lavonte David).

*Bortles on Yeldon’s 14-yard touchdown catch: “That was something we scored on in practice and they gave us the same look so I just checked it down to T.J.” Bortles appeared to look for TE Julius Thomas or WR Allen Hurns before moving to Yeldon.

*On their second drive, the Jaguars faced a third-and-6 from the 24 after Hurns’ five-yard catch and Ivory’s one-yard loss (RG A.J. Cann was beat by David). Bortles threw in 2.31 seconds, eight yards to Lee when the Buccaneers rushed six players. On the next play, the Jaguars dialed up a deep shot (seven-man protection). Bortles had 3.25 seconds to throw but Grimes broke up the pass intended for Robinson 35 yards downfield. On third-and-3, Bortles had 5.25 seconds to go through his options before a nine-yard catch by Robinson. Three plays later, on third-and-8, the Jaguars again used a seven-man protection and Robinson had a 17-yard catch.

*The starting offense’s night was done after Hurns’ 24-yard touchdown catch. Like the aggressiveness by play-caller Greg Olson. It’s second-and-1 in plus territory and it’s the preseason – might as well take a shot. Hurns lined up in the right slot. When Thomas motioned out wide right, he was followed by S Bradley McDougald. Hurns and Thomas had one-on-one coverage because FS Chris Conte was shaded to Robinson, who was wide left. Hurns juked outside before darting up field to gain an advantage on Grimes. Bortles threw in 3.03 seconds and his pass was over the reaching Grimes and Hurns caught it before Conte could get over.

*On Bortles’ drop-backs, Tampa Bay rushed five or more on five snaps.

Defense

*Notable playing time totals: All playing 17 snaps were SS Johnathan Cyprien, LB Paul Posluszny, LB Dan Skuta, LB Telvin Smith, LB Paul Posluszny, FS Tashaun Gipson, CB Jalen Ramsey and CB Davon House. Leading the defense were CB Demetrius McCray (53) and DE Chris Smith (52).

*The Jaguars’ starting defense rushed five or more on two of seven drop-backs by Winston.

*Skuta and House missed tackles.

*Winston’s passes traveled 14, 15, eight, 16, 25, four and 18 yards downfield. He had no completions against the starting defense.

*Tampa Bay’s first drive: Ramsey, lined up in the left slot, made a nice play to Dotson and drop RB Charles Sims for a six-yard loss. … Five plays later, Sims gained 12 yards when House missed his tackle, but Gipson made a good open-field stop. … On third-and-2, Winston left the pocket (5.66 seconds) and Smith dropped an interception at the 6-yard line.

*Tampa Bay’s second drive: Winston had 3.75, 2.60, 2.00 and 2.56 seconds to throw. Cyprien broke up a pass intended for TE Cameron Brate. On the next play, Winston’s pass went through Brate’s hands and CB Dwayne Gratz intercepted at the Jaguars’ 42.

Special teams

*Jason Myers’ first kickoff had 4.31 seconds of hang time and was caught at the 1-yard line. Donteea Dye returned it 31 yards. Peyton Thompson missed a tackle at the 14.

*Brad Nortman’s first punt was 64 yards and had a 4.63-second hang time. The return was 14 yards, allowing Tampa Bay to start at its 29.

“So far, so good,” general manager Dave Caldwell told the Times-Union at halftime. “Obviously, they’ve been efficient and we’ve been able to run the ball and pass protect and convert on third down.”

Run the ball: Yeldon and Ivory combined to gain 40 yards on eight carries.

“I defer to the coaches on [playing time] and we haven’t discussed it much,” Caldwell said. “Like we’ve said, whoever doesn’t start the game is still going to play a good amount.”

Pass protection: Bortles wasn’t sacked by Tampa Bay. His only big hit was a personal foul penalty by linebacker Kwon Alexander as Bortles ran out of bounds.

“They’ve done a nice job, all five guys and not just the first unit, but the second group, too,” Caldwell said.

“He’s pretty good,” Caldwell deadpanned. “He just needs to keep trending in this direction and he’ll continue to grow.”

The Jaguars’ first-team defense played two drives (16 snaps) and didn’t allow any points. They’ve played only 26 snaps in two games.

“[Coach] Gus [Bradley] wanted to go 15-20 snaps so it worked out perfectly,” Caldwell said. “When you look across the league, that’s what a lot of teams are doing. I’m sure we’ll go into the third quarter next week.”

The Jaguars face Cincinnati next Sunday, traditionally the final tune-up for the starters.
