Observations from Sunday’s training camp practice:

INJURY WATCH

* Tony Sparano announced that left tackle Jake Long, who had shoulder surgery right after the end of last season, has been placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list to start the season. The Dolphins can take him off the list at any time during the preseason, but if Long remains on the PUP list at the start of the regular season, he must by rule miss the Dolphins’ first six games. However, Sparano said he is not concerned about Long being ready for the Dolphins’ season opener against the Patriots on Sept. 12.

* Nose tackle Chris Baker and undrafted rookie offensive lineman Garrett Chisolm (ACL surgery) are on the Non-Football Injury list.

QUARTERBACK WATCH


Chad Henne
7-on-7s: Completed 3-of-8 passes overall. Had a beautiful deep out to Brian Hartline on the left sideline, plus a swing pass to Daniel Thomas and a check-down to Lou Polite. He also threw a slant pass that was nearly picked off by Yeremiah Bell, a quick out to Marlon Moore that was nearly picked off by Nolan Carroll and got Hartline drilled by Sean Smith on a square-in.

Team Drills: Completed 6-of-10 passes overall. Threw a nice square-in to Davone Bess and a beautiful playaction post to Anthony Fasano for 20 yards. Did not complete any deep passes down the field. Threw a slant pass behind Marshall that was almost picked by Benny Sapp.

Matt Moore
Not allowed to practice. Awaiting ratification of the new CBA.

Tom Brandstater
7-on-7s: Completed 2-of-5 passes overall – a quick hitch to Brooks Foster and a slant over the middle to Foster. Had one deep sideline pass to Clyde Gates picked off by rookie Jimmy Wilson.

Team Drills: Completed 3-of-5 passes overall. Only downfield pass was a medium post to Brett Brackett, but there was an illegal shift penalty on the play.

Pat Devlin
7-on-7s: Completed 3-of-5 passes overall. Completed a post to Julius Pruitt between two defenders. Completed a beautiful deep fade to Marlon Moore along the right sideline. Also had another deep pass dropped by Epps.

Team Drills: Completed 6-of-9 passes overall. His favorite target was Brooks Foster, hitting him three times on slants and quick hitches. Completed one deep pass, a wobbly slant and acrobatic catch by Marlon Moore.

QUICK SLANTS

* The team practiced in shoulder pads for the first time this season.

* Kevin Burnett Reggie Bush, Matt Moore, Tony McDaniel, Lydon Murtha, Lex Hilliard, Kory Sheets, Nate Garner and Jason Trusnik continue to sit out practice, awaiting the ratification of the new CBA, which the league hopes will happen by Aug. 4.

* The Dolphins are bringing former Giants Pro Bowl center Shaun O’Hara to Miami on Sunday for a visit, a league source confirmed. O’Hara, 34, has played guard and center in the NFL and would give the Dolphins added flexibility. But he played in just six games last year after suffering injuries to both feet, and the Giants cut him and Rich Seubert last week. O’Hara entered the league with Cleveland in 2000, and his position coach that year was Tony Sparano.

* The Dolphins signed seventh-year nose tackle Ron Fields, Sparano announced. Fields, 29, has started only 25 of 81 career games with just one career sack, but is familiar with Dolphins defensive coordinator Mike Nolan. He played for Nolan for four years in San Francisco and another for Denver, and will compete with Frank Kearse and Chris and Ryan Baker for a backup nose tackle spot.

* Burnett, on why he signed with Miami: “They wanted me. The feeling was mutual. You have to go where you’re wanted. It made the decision easy.”

* First-round pick Mike Pouncey finally hit the field after signing his rookie contract late Saturday night, and was immediately installed as the starting center. “He’s got that young energy,” Richie Incognito said. “He wants to mix it up with everybody.” Pouncey, who struggled with his shotgun snaps at Florida, air-mailed one snap during a drill, but did well for the most part. Sparano said he wants to keep Pouncey at center for now, but that may change if O’Hara is added to the roster.

* Sparano said grading the rookies right now is tougher than in most years because he didn’t get to evaluate them during the offseason program. “You’re going to have to really know what they can do well, and only ask them to do that,” Sparano said.

* Rookie seventh-round safety Jimmy Wilson has impressed Sparano after three practices. He’s made two interceptions so far. “The ball finds him,” Sparano said.
