Just a few weeks ago, the Raiders looked like a team that had packed it in for the season. They were playing without energy and losing to some of the worst teams in the league. Josh McDaniels appeared to be on the brink of another head coaching catastrophe and with the team’s record at 2-7, it didn’t look like there was a lot left to play for.

But somewhere between the Raiders’ embarrassing loss to a high school head coach and the overtime win in Denver, something happened with the team that changed the course of the season.

ESPN’s Jason Fitz appeared on Raider Nation Radio this week and talked about what he believes was the turning point of the season: Derek Carr’s emotional press conference after the Colts game.

“A lot of people had a lot of judgement for that moment,” Fitz said this week on The Morning Tailgate with Clay Baker. “The week after when you saw the way they reacted in the locker room, there was an emotion to it, but there was also a lift. I just think seeing that level of care… that changes the way most people that care about what they do, do their job the next day.”

“It feels like that moment was almost the dark cloud lifting” Fitz continued. “I don’t know why… [but] ever since the podium breakdown we have seen guys fighting for each other that weren’t doing it beforehand. So whether the breakdown is the cause or whether there is some other cause, I don’t know. But you can look at that moment and say everything changed.”

At the very least, we know there was a moment that the Raiders’ season turned around because they are officially playing like a playoff contender again. They have gotten better in each of the last three weeks and the schedule over the next few weeks will give them an opportunity to get back into the playoff picture.
