Kaboly írt a TheAthleticre arról, hogy ki a 10 legfontosabb player a Steelersnek 2020-ra:

All things considered, and especially considering what happened without him last season, Ben Roethlisberger is the most important player on the Steelers’ 2020 roster — it would be difficult to argue against that.

But … let’s give it a shot.

For the second year in a row, I have put together the top 10 most important Steelers for the upcoming season. To me, the most important players are ones who must play at a high level at a critical position and stay injury-free for the entire season for the team to be successful.

Roethlisberger is a natural choice but not the top choice.

The Steelers can be successful if Roethlisberger doesn’t play at his 2018 level when he threw for more than 5,000 yards. The Steelers can succeed with an 80 percent effective Roethlisberger and probably could afford for him to sit a game or two if it is necessary.

You can’t say the same about Devin Bush. If Bush doesn’t play 950 snaps, if Bush doesn’t have 140 tackles, if Bush isn’t able to cover tight ends and running backs, and if Bush can’t stay healthy, there is no coming back from that.

We will get into the specifics later but first, let’s go over some who didn’t make the list and why.

• Joe Haden — Haden is important to the defense and is coming off a Pro Bowl year, but Justin Layne and Cam Sutton are more than capable of filling in.

• Maurkice Pouncey — A long-term injury would be devastating, but with Stefen Wisniewski on board now, it eases the burden that Pouncey has to stay on the field at all times.

• Chris Boswell — A bad kicker can be detrimental to a team. Boswell was two years ago, but even if he does fall on his face again this year, there are 10 guys out there that would be good enough to get the Steelers through.

• James Conner — Although I view Conner as an elite talent if he can stay healthy, Benny Snell Jr. can do virtually everything Conner does. All he needs is an opportunity, which puts the position in a good, well, position.

Here’s my list of the top 10 most important Steelers for the 2020 season:

10. CB Steven Nelson

Was there a guy more underappreciated in the entire league than Nelson a year ago? The Steelers signed him to the most lucrative free-agent contract in their history and he proved to be a vital cog in the league’s top defense.

Nelson was targeted less than five times per game (72), allowed fewer receptions (37) than the four All-Pro selections and the corners who also made the Pro Bowl, and he joined defensive player of the year, Stephon Gilmore, and Tra’Davious White, another top corner, in going an entire season without allowing any touchdowns.

Haden had something to do with that. The pass rush had something to do with that. And you can argue that Haden was in the same category last year and the two could be swapped, given the reasons listed above.

But Nelson’s first season with the Steelers was impressive and gave them as close to a shut-down corner they’ve had since Ike Taylor’s best seasons. That’s a long way from the Ross Cockrell and Antwon Blake days.

9. TE Eric Ebron

A healthy and motivated Ebron can be a real difference-maker with an offense that hasn’t gotten much production out of the tight end position since Heath Miller retired five years ago.

The Steelers signed Ebron to a two-year, $12 million free-agent deal in March after the tight end played four years with the Lions and two with the Colts — some good and some not so good.

Roethlisberger has never had a middle-of-the-field weapon and a red-zone target like Ebron in his entire career. Miller was an unbelievable player, but Ebron’s big-play ability opens up endless possibilities that could have a trickle-down effect with the receivers and the running game.

Ebron has been deadly in the red zone especially two years ago, and the Steelers need help in that area. They converted just 35 percent of their red-zone possessions to touchdowns in 2019 — last in the NFL — after leading the league in 2018 with a 73.5 percent red-zone percentage. Plenty of that had to do with the loss of Roethlisberger, but the struggles at tight end played into that as well.

8. DE Cam Heyward/Stephon Tuitt

The bookend defensive ends have to be lumped together here because the defense could be in trouble if one or the other gets hurt or underperforms.

With Javon Hargrave gone, there would be a significant dropoff if either one would be lost. Chris Wormley and Isaiah Buggs would be the next men up, Mike Tomlin said, and Tyson Alualu will be the main contributor at nose tackle. The Steelers got lucky last year when Tuitt went down and Hargrave was able to slide over and the defense excelling.

Tuitt missed 10 games last year after tearing his pec, the third straight year that injuries stunted his production (which has been good with 12 sacks over the past 32 games, but he can’t stay on the field). He hasn’t played in all 16 games since 2014, his rookie year, and he was a role player for the majority of that season.

Heyward turned 31 in the offseason and is the heart and soul of the defense. Heyward and Tuitt together are dominant — just look at the first six games last year.

7. WR Diontae Johnson

The biggest jump is from the first year to the second, or so that’s what we’ve been told. If that’s accurate, Johnson is in store for a pretty dynamic season that could affect how teams cover JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Johnson’s rookie year was consistent: At least five targets in 12 games, at least four receptions in eight games, at least 60 yards in six games and nothing less than 64 percent of the snaps in every healthy game after Week 2 against the Seahawks. Johnson led all rookies with 59 receptions and didn’t have much in the way of an accurate quarterback throwing him the ball.

Johnson needs to continue that upward trajectory to give this offense more than one dynamic weapon.

Now, I am not saying Johnson will have a Smith-Schuster-esque second year (111 catches, 1,426 yards and seven touchdowns), but he will be enough of a threat that will force teams to account for everybody. Also, who knows what Smith-Schuster is capable of doing as the No. 1? Last year, it wasn’t much for a plethora of reasons.

6. FS Minkah Fitzpatrick

This time last year, it would have been impossible to predict what was in store for the Steelers and Fitzpatrick: a surprising trade, a quick ascent to cult-hero status, a Pro Bowl berth and a first-team All-Pro selection.

Fitzpatrick took the Steelers defense to the next level after joining the team via trade between Weeks 3 and 4. Eventually, teams were able to figure him out — they just didn’t throw it his way. That can’t happen this year as teams have used the offseason to study Fitzpatrick’s strengths.

Last year, it was mostly as a one-high safety or splitting the field in half with Terrell Edmunds. Quarterbacks were locating where he was and going the other way. He wasn’t targeted at all in four of the last seven games. You take away the four times that Baker Mayfield tried him in Week 12, and he had only four targets over the second half of the year.

Fitzpatrick’s ability to do more in the way of moving around will be a big key to the defense. Oh yeah, there’s not much in the way behind him either.

5. OLB Bud Dupree

We saw last year what two pass-rushing outside linebackers in the Steelers’ defensive scheme can do. Dupree finally put it all together and was able to use his size, power and speed to his advantage to easily have his best season yet.

Dupree had a career-high 11.5 sacks and combined with T.J. Watt for 26 — the most since the James Harrison/LaMarr Woodley combination nearly a decade before — and was able to parlay that into a $15.9 million one-year payday. And how things are looking now when it comes to next year’s salary cap, Dupree will be gone after this season.

The Steelers need that same kind of production from Dupree this year, which may be difficult to do. It’s not that he doesn’t have the talent but complacency can’t set in. After making nearly $26 million in a span of two seasons, that’s a concern.

To help the offense, help the secondary and protect Watt, Dupree has to produce and stay healthy, especially with a lack of depth at the position.

4. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster

Smith-Schuster couldn’t have had a worse 2019: 42 catches, 552 yards, three touchdowns and four games missed with an injury.

He came into the new year with the pressure of having to replace Antonio Brown, and it worked out terribly. Whether it was the injuries, the quarterback play, the inexperience or a little bit of everything, Smith-Schuster did little-to-nothing to help the team last year.

Now, with a healthy quarterback and a year of being the No. 1 receiver under his belt, Smith-Schuster has to produce plays — especially the big ones — like he did his first two years in the league.

Who knows if he can do it? There is a relatively small sample size — 17 games — in which Smith-Schuster was the top receiver and the results were are ugly: three catches and 45 yards a game on average. It has to be better.

3. OLB T.J. Watt

Watt should’ve won the defensive player of the year a season ago — that’s how good he was with yet another giant step forward in his development. Watt had 14.5 sacks, but almost as impressive, he led the league with 59 pressures and was second with 36 quarterback hits.

We are talking about a potential generational player in Watt. He has 34.5 sacks over his first three seasons and with a modest uptick this year, he can join the likes of Derrick Thomas (58), J.J. Watt (57), DeMarcus Ware (53.5), Reggie White (52) and Dwight Freeny (51) to reach the 50-sack mark through four seasons.

Watt has consistently shown that he has the talent to be that disruptive force this defense so desperately needs.

There is no replacing Watt. There is no replacing his production. He’s one guy who if his productivity drops it will be felt on every level of the defense — that’s how important he’s become to the Steelers.

2. QB Ben Roethlisberger

Yeah, he’s important to the success of the 2020 Steelers, that’s for sure. He very well could be the most important player on the team when it comes to determining whether or not they have a legitimate chance at the playoffs and even a deep run.

Everybody saw what happened when he was injured last year. The team could barely average two touchdowns per game, and this is coming off a season in which they had one of the most prolific offenses in the NFL.

It goes beyond his ability to throw the ball with his surgically repaired elbow. The Steelers need his ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage, change protections, understand the offense and, as simple as it sounds, throw a receiver open. Last year, the Steelers simply asked their quarterbacks to run plays and don’t screw them up.

So why isn’t he the most important Steeler in 2020? There is still a great defense on the other side, much better than he’s seen in a decade. And then there is a backup quarterback who at least has some game snaps under his belt with Mason Rudolph.

Bush started 15 of 16 games and played 889 out of a possible 1,043 plays. And now they are expecting more out of him. Much more.

The Steelers cut Mark Barron (750 snaps) without a replacement, which means there is even more pressure on Bush to perform. Vince Williams isn’t going to get Barron’s vacant snaps, and the other two possibilities (Ulysees Gilbert and Robert Spillane) have combined for one career defensive snap.

And you don’t have to look far in the past to realize that a season-ending injury to a star inside linebacker can be devastating. It took the Steelers years and a lot of draft capital to replace Ryan Shazier.

Bush has to stay healthy, he needs to play more snaps and he has to continue to play at a high level. That’s a lot to ask for a soon-to-be 22-year-old.

Volt erről egy cikk is, hogy az első 2 meccsen több esetben a még nem megfelelő kommunikációnak, alaphelyzetben rossz helyezkedés, köszönhetően szerzett INT-et. Természetesen nyomás volt bőven, így "csak" a QB béna labdáját kellett összeszedni. Korábban ezt sem tudta ilyen szinten senki a SEC-ből. Később aztán jól helyezkedett és voltak jó hívásai is, remélem ez folytatódik.
